Tacoma A.D.D. Diagnostics (4x4 Front Differential Actuator) 3rd Gen 2020

I had already replaced the A.D.D. (4x4 front diff actuator) twice in my 2020 Tacoma during my 2 years of ownership. I was worried that after replacing the second time, it would still end up getting water sucked into it. Initially I had thought the issue was due to the location of the breather in the engine bay. Turns out the hose was damaged and needed to be replaced.
Update: yes, I realize that’s a soaker hose. I swapped it out for an appropriate hose shortly after.

I'm pretty sure u gonna get more likes and views on ur video, this issue and bad design for such an overpriced truck shouldn't be happening, shame on Toyota for not checking on those hoses when replacing the ADD... Thanks for the enlightening

Thank you so much! I was installing my 3rd ADD in my 4runner and came across your vid while waiting for my gasket to cure. I checked and sure enough, I had the same rip in the same spot. I just bent the hard line up and snipped that last 3/4" off the soft line and plugged it back on. Thank you for posting this!

This was an awesome video with a perfect explanation and diagram. I have a 2014 4Runner with the same exact problem. I replaced the ADD and 8 months later, it got water in it again and corroded. I’m gonna buy a new ADD and extend the line as well. Thanks for the help!!

Is that soaker hose? Thats not airtight and will allow water to pass through it. Its designed to seep water to slowly water plants.

That hose is full of holes. Its soaker hose. You should use some fuel line or vacuum line from an automotive store.

Pretty sure that's solid hose meant to run off the main irrigation line with an emitter on the other end. I've got a roll and a bunch of various emitters.

Thanks! Dealer already replaced mine twice and it’s malfunctioning yet again. No water intrusion though, so I keep looking for some sort of permanent fix. The ADD im mechanism is so simple, so I’m puzzled why it’s such a weak link for so many people

Great vid, thanks! (looks like an alley in Reseda?) As stated below, that's soaker hose; it's permeable to water/air. Get some braided high-abrasion-resistant hose from McMaster-Carr.

Just replaced this part, it has a short breather on with a bung in. Should it be left like this or should it be put on as in this video?

Hey bro what’s the process of replacing your add cuz I know you have to drain the oil out but What’s the torq spec for the bolts to get it back on and how much oil do I use and where do I put it and is there anything else liquid or stuff like that that I will have to add back in after doing this?

What are the symptoms of this problem? I just have a terrible time getting in and out of 4W Low. Just beeps at me... eventually it drops if I run through the gears a bit. I'd like to convert back to the old manual shifter for 4W Lo.

SOAKER HOSE!! Not sure if you know that the replacement hose you used looks like 1/4 drip soaker hose... if that is the case you are going to have more water than ever in that line!

It’s a 2020. But this will the the same for all 3rd gen 4x4 Tacomas, 2016-2023

Dude. I had the same rip in the same place. Toyota said that it’s because of a lift so no warranty (after replacing twice under warranty without discovering this issue). Makes me wonder why this happens. Do you have a diff drop?

these systems just barely work when all is normal...The poor vent system is only part of the problem.The actuator motors are under powered and poorly connected.The electronics are too fast for the mech-drives....the old vac systems, as bad as they were....were more reliable and easier to fix.These systems have no diagnostic flow charts and cannot be scanned.Almost like BMW designed it.
