TACTACAM 5.0 Review (First Impressions from Maryland)

On this episode of Death by Bunjie I set out to film a video in a hotel room in Maryland during some down time during the Early Crossbow Season. So far, Bunjie and I are happy with the Tactacam 5.0 overall. The next video review of this little camera will discuss video quality in more detail.
This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...

Funny that you mention mounting to the scope. I believe I ruined my Excalibur scope doing that. I pick up my 5.0 tomorrow so I'll be using the rail mount from here on out.

Rich I upgraded to the Tactacam 4.0 and it’s a high improvement over the 2.0, you nailed all of my lines & dislikes to a tee! I’ve called and written to Tactacam support with the same concerns and dislikes with the Picatinny mount,

Wow, three does! I haven't even sighted in my bow yet and you already have a full freezer. I was determined that I would spend time shooting the bow today, but had too many fires to put out. Hopefully tomorrow.

Thank you for your initial review on the TACTICAM 5.0..👍 If you know a machinist have him duplicate your bracket in stainless steel then have it anodized.. Pick up the bolt at Lowe’s or Home Depot

All these years I used the GoPro for this LOL still love the GoPro for the wide-angle shot but the tactacam rules for mounting on the crossbow huh?

Just a suggestion. Since you were concerned about the threads on that screw for the rail mount. Maybe put some LOCTITE On it. But remember to use the BLUE and NOT the red. The blue is of medium strength, and can be removed with little effort. but the red usually requires an application of heat to loosen it back up for removal..

The only problem with that is that I have to take an on and off regularly to put it in and out of the case. But that is a good idea, if I were going to leave it in place. I'll check once again and see if I can leave it in place and still keep it in the case. Didn't look like there was enough clearance though.

The only cameras that do well in low light are specialized nigh vision and thermal units. You might what to look at the Drift cameras as they are a lot easier to work than the Gopro's

Or the Sony a7s2, that thing can see in the dark lol... waiting on the a7s 3, very interested in that one.

4k , 15 fps, no zoom gives the best (or least worst) low light footage. Files are enormous, and slow motion will suffer, so might want to B roll with other camera, and turn on Tactacam last few seconds before the shot. All cameras eventually go grainy once light reaches a certain level.

Would you recommend the picattiny rail for 5.0 though? Wonder if they done soemthing different to make screw stronger!

I don't know the diameter of the camera or anything but it looks like it might fit in a scope ring or a flashlight mount

Question about the low light sensor on this camera... I'm paralyzed and I use a ground blind to hunt out of. I'm wondering if this camera will pick up enough light to be able to work in such a dark area.

The amount of light inside the blind is not important. The amount of light outside is what will determine how much good video you got. Most of the time it is adequate. It's not great as it gets dark, but it sure is better than nothing! I think it will work just find out of a blind. Good luck out there!

I came across your tactacam review again . Thanks again for sharing..Would you believe I’ve misplaced it.. Can you via wi-fi view the image in your cell(app) simultaneously looking through your scope,? Are you contemplating the FTS ? I hope your 🍖 🥩 MEAT & GREET is an enjoyable & successful event !!!

Thank you, I hope it goes well, too. I have not used the FTS but plan on trying it out soon. Yes, it is my understanding you can view the camera through the app although I have not done that either. Playing around with the tactacam is something that is going to get done soon, I have a feeling.

Hello: Rich. I'm wanting to get a tactacom for my bulldog 400 is the rail mount standard or can you find another manufacturer that may have better quality? Don't want to have a mess up with poor quality mount. Thank you Greg. Ohio

Tactacam has two different mounts you can try. There might be some other variations but I haven't tried them. It's still working for what that's worth

The Tacticam 5.0 and the others are all digital zoom. The reason for the good picture quality with zoom is you are starting with a 4k sensor. If you did the same zooming with a 1080 sensor it would look like crap.

The 8x zoom on this really is an optical zoom. The lens is creating the standard zoomed image. But it's not really zoomed in because it's just the actual image produced with that lens. You are right, however, that everything beyond that is digital zoom. This camera has a setting to zoom in even further, and that is done digitally. I totally agree that there would be quite a difference between 4K and 1080p, and it would not look nearly as good if it zoomed in beyond that a 8X lens field of view digitally in 1080p. 4K really is a game changer.

@@Deathbybunjie I doubted the zoom was actually optical so I called Tacticam and got into a technical conversation about the 5.0. I asked them several things including the lens FOV & if the zoom was digital & they said the lens FOV is 60 degree's because they believed that was closest to the human eye & zooming is done digitally. I also suspected the "auto focus" was actually a fixed infinity focus & they said that yes, the focus is fixed. To me the combination of a 60 degree lens & 4k makes the Tacticam the best out there for a clear image at distance. It will be years, but I can't wait for 8k! Now if only they would add Optical image stabilization like Sony.

If it's your main camera, use highest frame rate if you can do 60fps on that, do it. Use at least HD 1080p, don't do 720p. Hope that helps!

@@Deathbybunjie I chose the 5.0 camera on eBay w/2 mounts. 1 for picatinny & 1 for over and under. $379 Now I have to figure out bolt/broadhead configuration.
