Tadeusz Faliszewski & Orkiestra Syrena Rekord - Ach Ludwiko! (Ach, Louise!) Foxtrot z komedii muzycznej Teatru Polskiego „Rozkoszna dziewczyna" (from Teatr Polski musical comedy „A Delightful Girl") Muz. Ralph Benatzky, Tekst Oldlen (Julian Tuwim), Syrena-Electro 1934 (Poland)
NOTE: It's the flip side of the slowfox „Odwiedzi mnie pan" (You'll Visit Me, Monsieur) which I uploaded in YT last week • Polish tango: Tadeusz ... . The hot foxtrott "Ach Ludwiko" became the big hit in Poland, mainly because of the catchy name which, so nowadays as then, has not been common in Poland. Also -- the witty and very funny text written by one of the finest Polish prewar poets, Julian Tuwim (who, under many pseudonyms - including "Oldlen" - wrote songs and scetches for the Warsaw cabarets) added to enormous popularity of that hit in Poland in turn of 1934/35. The songs is simply a list of funny names of the little provincial railway stations which lay between the place, where the author lives and from where his beloved Ludwika comes by train to see him on weekends. In that respect, it can be compared to a very popular American hit from the Roaring Twenties "My Cutie's Due At Two To Two" (see its fabulous rendition by Ted Weems' Orchestra in YT • Roaring 20s: Ted Weems... ). Among all the phantasmagoric names produced by Julian Tuwim's imagination, my favorites are "Kudły" (the "Shags), "Dychawice" (Barely-Gaspington) or "Pipczyn, dawniej Wziery" (which can be translated as "the Peep Village, formerly the "Spy-on-ton").
The railway-like nature of this upload made me present in my slideshow the unique, in European scale, architectural project in Poland, in the 1920s. As result of the national competition, the overall uniform design of the local railway-stations throughout Poland was defined. It was based on the style of Polish country manor house, where, through ages, lived Polish nobility and land owners in the independent Poland. The style of such manor -- late Renaissance mixed with early Baroque - referred to ages of the glamour of Polish Empire (the 16/17th centuries). The need for such visual confirmation of the "Polishness" is quite unedestandable when we remember, that in 1918, when after 150 years of its partition between Prussia, Russia and Austria -- Poland was re-established as infdependent state. Therefore, one of the crucial tasks was the re-unification of Poland also in spiritual sense, through the skilfully used Polish symbols. On the photoes can be seen some of those buildings, erected trhoughout the country in years 1925-30. As we can see, they are really neat, tasteful, full of individual charm and a simple sophistication. Many of them, after reconstruction, still operates as railway stations today.
See also a very hot German "Ach, Louise" played by Fred Bird's dance orchestra • Ach Luise! / Fred Bird...

Hello Grzegorz - this vid is super charming. Everything about it is terrific. I knew a lot of students from Pruszkow who always claimed that they lived in Warsaw. People who live in Warsaw know that Pruszkow is a small, provincial cluster - close to Warsaw - even if the Pruszkow students attempted that typical Warsaw accent - trying to impress anybody who would listen that Warsaw is tops and Cracow comes close second while other cities belong behind those "elite" places. Great Sunday to you!!!

What a cute song -- very nifty record! Viewing your slideshow, I am reminded that it will be, if ever, long after my death that our relatively young United States acquires anything like the romance of European countries. It seems that our land was born at a time when architectural design was moving into what looks even today more like "modern" -- at least in public or commercial structures. What is very sad is that so much from the early history of various countries in Europe was lost to war

Hi Lana, thanks for the story. I think, every capital city in the world has such little problem with their suburbs or their satellite towns. Once, in the 1970s I stayed in Slough near London, and I observed a very similar phenomenon to what you're writing about.

I don't think I ever had chance to show you some of them, when you were in Poland. There are not many in Pomerania, where we mostly stayed and where dominates - as you may remember - the gothic style and the red brick. Those creamy-white charming little things were typical rather for the Central/Eastern Poland.

Fortunately, in Poland quite a few of those "Renaissance/Baroque" railway stations are still in use today. Some of them even have been advanced to a range of "object of art" and had been renowned - like the one in Otwock (the photo of which I included into a slideshow). However, what worries me is the fate of most of those lovvely buildings which were either pulled down or remodelled in the Stalinist "style" on territory of former Poland, which after 1945 was annexed into Soviet Russia.

Ludwicka must be a cousin of Luisa, whom you addressed as with an "Ach" in your poem and in recent upload. The curved lines of the train stations contribute to their elegance.

Type Zułów in the Google and you wil se what's remained today from that absolutely stunning 1920s copy of an old little Polish manor house of the "small nobility" - as the poorer part of it was called - and many of whom inhabited the territory around Wilno. Fortunately, the Podbrodzie station is in a little better shape.
