And he can sing too!!! ...boy I am starting to think there is more to this Shug feller than meets the camera lens! Thanks for sharing, always a joy to be along...
What a great trip. The best part for me what the smile on the young mans face when he met you. That’s pretty cool that you have touched and been a positive influence on his young life that he’ll remember. Well done sir! So glad you’re back out in the woods. Happy trails Shug!
Not a Chanterelle! The mushroom you showed at the beginning had true gills. Chanterelles have veins that run halfway down the stem. All chanterelles have veins including Black trumpets, and Cinnabar Chanterelle.
I second that diagnosis Timothy. I found gobs of those false chanterelles, got home and did the search, whaa. The gills on them flex like paper. Chowed down on the black trumpets and chicken of the woods though.
Chanterelle mushrooms do not have gills, they have fake gills (sometimes referred to as veins). The veins are decurrent, this means they run down into the stem. What you have there appear to have true gills. If so I'm guessing false chanterells or jack-o-lanterns, both are inedible. Love your vids, thanks for sharing and keep on rocking it! :)
Shug, you said something that I noticed and it shouldn't be overlooked. I recently went out to Colorado and did a solo hike with my dog. Every single person that I encountered on the trail was in a good mood. Nature and a good trail brings out the best in people. I also think it is a sharing of something that like minded people love to do that brings out that goodness. Whoo buddy!
Man, it's true what you say : the woods help us being in the moment, being real and have real deep conversations. That's probably why I do so much forest and mountain walks and hikes.
Definitely NOT a chanterelle, lol. The give-away is the free-standing, easily-broken gills rather than folds and bridges like you see in chants. Probably a Russula. Edibility would depend on whether or not it's acrid/hot to the taste when nibbled (don't eat the hot ones - they won't kill you, but they might make you wish it for a bit). That second yellow one is an unrelated species, I think.
I just spent the last week in Cades Cove in the great Smoky Mountains, in Tenn. and man was it nice, also a great to come home to a new video from YOU, Woo Buddy!
Shug, You're so right about the way an overcast day can actually make the woodland colors more vivid! Some of my best days in the woods were on overcast days-especially in the fall.
23:35 favorite shot of the video. Loved that you got to meet the father and son but sure they might have enjoyed it more, meeting you. Great couple of guys joining you but boy do I miss Hickory. That Haven XL looked mighty comfortable. Thanks for another one Shug.
What a special time you had. Super nice guys. I did a day class on mushrooms years ago. There’s a lot to know. I really like your videoing of them. It was nice to see the Father and son out on the trail, too.
That was awesome Shug! It was a lot of fun to watch you hike and camp with Joe and Mathew. They seem like my kind of people. I'll check out their podcast.
Great video and wonderful location. I always think how lucky people are to have these sorts of places right in their backyards, but then you mentioned a 5hr drive, so it's kind of reassuring to hear that others have to do a bit of a mission to get these beauty spots as well.
I was out there at the same time, stayed at the second site on the east side of the loop, the one right before whiskey jack. I was gonna belt out the loudest woooo buddy I could muster but decided I shouldn't shatter the ambiance for the other hikers but now I regret it haha pretty sure you would have heard it. Thanks for all the videos man it's been a huge help in lots of ways!
Really cool kick off to the primo camping season soon to be upon us. I'm glad you guys got to meet up. Might make ole "Hickery" jealous! 😂 Enjoyed as always brother!
I look forward to your videos as often as you put them out. Everyday I go to see if you put out a new video. And I can't wait to watch the newest one you've put up. You make my day! Of course you're no Clint Eastwood, but you still make my day and you make me smile and laugh.
Lately I enjoy trip reports the most as they just play out. Wish I could trip every week. But I have too many other things in my life and the woods are just a part of all that. Thanks for always watching. And checking.
I will never get tired of watching you hike Angleworm. I hiked it in '19 and '20 as a way to cut my teeth on backpacking. Was going to move on to Snowbank Lake this year, but between the fires and moving, I never got up north. Oh well, always next year, whooo buddy!
Early!!!! Haha, been waiting so patiently for a new hiking vid! Don't get "lost" too! One of these days I need to take a flight up there for Superior hiking trail. I'll let ya know.
Looks like a fun couple of guys to hang with for a night. I wonder if the bears leave you guys alone because of Hickory's snoring. 😆. So cool to see the father and son. Shug breaks out the 6 string. Nice!
Unfortunately for me I am at work at the moment but I will watch this when I get home while I'm eating my dinner this particular sector 7 is doing good so far
Chanterelles! you pronounce your French well !! your hammock looks very comfortable, it's the cadillac of hammocks! always a pleasure to listen to you my friend! Merci beaucoup pour tes vidéos 🎥 Pickleball xxx
What a great trip! Hiking and or backpacking in the woods and or mountains enjoying creation indeed have a way of lifting a person's spirits and bringing out the best in people. One of the many reasons I love to get out there. Looking forward to the book being written. Highly recommend "Lost in the Wild" by Cary Griffiths, two gripping tales of men who went missing and how quickly things can go south so to speak, one in the BWCA and the other in Quetico.
Shug and Bill Withers and nature. That’s some good stuff! The singing made me think of one of my favorite songs you do, “Brown Mountain Lights.” Hunting for Lloyd…maybe you and Hickery need to track down some ghost lights. And eat some BBQ, of course. A pleasure as always!
Just got back from a trip to the Blood Mountain Wilderness in Georgia in my hammock ... then get to see Shug with some new friends. Awesome! My art came too, WHOOO BUDDY )))) !!
@@shugemery We stayed at the Northwoods inn on Saturday. They were the only place with availability. It was a long hike out, but with the weather Saturday night and Sunday morning I'm glad we weren't in the woods. Meeting you was the highlight of Gavin's trip! I had to print the picture out that I took of you two so he could take it to school and show all of his friends! I will have to keep my eye out for Joe's book. Thanks again for helping make a great trip even better for my son.
We were there too. We went to Whiskey Jack looking for you. I guess we missed you. Maybe next time. It was a pleasure sharing the woods with you though
I love getting to share your adventures with you, I could feel your enjoyment of the trip coming through. I double love seeing you enjoy the Haven System!! I have the regular and like it a lot but im definitely going to order the XL as well, why not have even more space right? Cheers from Saskatchewan, Woo Buddy!
Currently watching this in a Haven Tent! Just got it in the mail today, so of course I'm sleeping in it tonight at my house. So far, I'm impressed! Definitely heavier than I'd like, but for weekend trips I think it'll do just fine.
It always good to listen to the atmosphere of a place.... we get these feeling for a reason. I think it's something early man was better at, but we still have the ghost of it.
Camping, hiking and bushcraft are my favourite things to do, my mind knows this and because I am mentally ill, my mind has decided to make me have panic attacks to stop me going. Whenever I am packed, dressed to leave and feeling like crap I watch shugs videos and go to the woods.
Shug ,you did it again out of the park. TNKS for the tech details, made that trip to the rootball at 4a.m. Seems most stuff in the stores is for lil people, not us regular 275# guys who like to be out side. The missing people stuff is all over the USA. It's not fun to think that can't happen to me .... Anyway how is the wifey she mending OK we hope. Snowing today thats Wyoming.
Skimmed into this & already love the hammock concepts & good characters; I'll pop back in a bit & take it all in. The ideas that you do not need, nor do main-stream hammocks & tarps necessarily prevail: there is always room to innovate. I love having the pad & ground options: more positions, inflate on train exhibition car at night to sleep, easy sleep at a bus layover or airport, and comfortable stracture-sleep-number hammock bed. Waiting on two of those Wilderness Innovations Hammock-Shelter-ponchos.
Next best thing to getting out in the woods, is watching you out in the woods. Still not camping weather here in south Louisiana but hopefully soon. Thanks for the inspiration, Shug. Woo Buddy! (By the way, that song is one of my favorites).
In south Louisiana also. Lol unfortunately for few actually camp worthy days for me is far an fee between. I can’t do the hot and humid. So small period of the year I can get out. Just wish we had more areas. Seems like everywhere shug gets out to is beautiful
It's funny you mentioned the spot where something felt off. Theres a state forest near me here in Wisconsin that this one spot I go to, feels off and I am uneasy about it every time I'm there. I even tried to do a dispersed camp there once and I bailed. I think we have remanences of a sense from a time when we were more wild. A sense that helps to keep us safe in the woods.
You should be celebrated with a holiday. I hereby declare national Shug day October 19 ( because that’s my birthday and I always hike on my birthday) We should experience the woods every year on that day. Thanks again Shug from Spartanburg SC
Happy to see you Shug and with your Haven 💕 I'm taking mine out in June to Truckee California. I already live and camp in the Sierras in Plumas County but Truckee will be a first 💕🏕️
Anyone else cringe when Mathew climbed in Shugs hammock with dirty feet. Great video Shug with a good group of guys, thanks for keeping the sector secure.
I just hiked the Smokies with my Haven. It's a bit heavy but I sleep so well in it I don't care! The cross bars are great for airing out your undies and socks.
I was just thinking about you Saturday. I took my friend out for his first hammock camp. It was just a little overnighter here in northwest Missouri. He has been converted he is already asking to go again. You played a part I used your videos to convince him to go.
Hey Shug, long time viewer and really enjoy your work. During a visit from my father, he said he recognized you and had met you at one point, while he was touring. His name is Rodney Dillard, from the Dillards (Darlins, from the Andy Griffith show.) Small world. Just thought I'd share. Anyway, keep up the great work!
Yep. He would argue the fame perspective though 😆 Incidentally, he was pretty impressed with the engagement your videos prompt. Pete Beck with the River Kings and I met some time ago and became friends, dad started watching and enjoying his work as well. Thats one awesome component RU-vid can provide. Connecting with great and talented folks!
The Haven is on my short list for the next purchase. I just can't wrap my head around the weight, I am by no means an ultralight hiker, but that 7 lb always catches me. I guess in reality it's only 2 lb more than my current rig. Hmmm... Anyway, another great video. I got to live vicariously on this rainy morning down here in Illinois.
I’m sticking with my XLC Blackbird but that hammock looked like a super king sized bed in the penthouse at some swank, “SWANK” Los Vegas Casino Hotel. Good video. 👍🏕🇨🇱
@@shugemery i was looking at it in the spring but Derek told me to wait till fall :-) Whats the condensation like and also how warm is it with the inflatable pad?
@@shugemery can you do a quick video using it with an underquilt or a second pad, if its at all even possible to fit either one?.. im over on the other side of the lakes and it gets really cold winter camping.
SHUG, got and suggestion. I've been drinking Turkish coffee for 25 years. 10 years ago I started using it as instant coffee. If you have the super fine coffee, 2 teaspoons in a mug and pour boiling water, stir for a little longer than you'd think, wait for the grounds to settle and voila. Experiment with the strength of coffee you enjoy. 2 teaspoons is just my preference. Enjoy
@@shugemery No waiting involved. Try it. The stirring is for the grounds to absorb the water and sink. My cup takes less than 5 seconds. Thanks for keep your eyes on the comments. You've been an inspiration. For camping and life :)
