This video is about my personal experience with the Haven Hammock Tent and potential modifications that could be useful. This is Haven was purchased by me from Kickstarter and if you attempt any mods you do it on your own accord. Additional hardware was purchased from DutchwareGear.com.
Info on carbon fiber spreader bars for the narrow Haven. In early 2020 the cost was $60, plus $6 shipping. The carbon fiber poles weigh about 3.6oz. The original aluminum bars weigh about 7.6oz and are 23" long, with a diameter of about 1/2. I reached out to Josh at rutalocura.com
In my opinion, I find the Haven to be a very comfortable flat lay and good for car camping or for anyone wanting to try a bridge style system. Cold weather can be done but I think it is best suited for 40 F degree and above. What do you think?

Hi bought my Haven from Amazon. Took it 17 days camping. Went from California to Tennessee and visited all the sites. The tent worked great except I had to reinforce the stress areas with my hand sewing talents. The air mattress leaked from the start in 4-6 hours it was flat. I am looking for a replacement mattress for my Haven Tent! Great design, medium quality craftsmanship.

A good and thorough review. The upgrades were also useful. I will use a 10x10 tarp and a better pad system instead of those issued wih the hybrid. One tip:go to the area underneath each end of the tarp and follow the ridgeline inwards to the space just before it meets the very end of the shelter. Now tie pardacord, extra shoestrings, rope, or other forms of useful cordage with wicking properties down from the ridgeline. Keep the ridgeline exposed on the inside to space it slightly away from the hammock itself. You can also use a rubber gasket, piece of plastic wrap or some other waterproof material on the inner side to stop water flow there. You can even place a small sponge bead and gasket there after that, if you wish. It's a great way to store your cordage keep it dry and ready while you're at camp too. Tie this cordage loosely in the middle from the ridgeline just beyond the tips of the hammock and let the ends hang down loosely. The cordage will collect the extra moisture trying to drip into the ends of the structure and move it safely away from your shelter. Repeat this procedure on the other side and water getting in from the ends themselves shouldn't be a problem anymore. Another tip:wrap sticky tape around the ridgeline at both ends of the ridgeline, upper tarp lines, and all hanging support lines and now crawling insects can't get to your hammock directly from the tree stalks anymore either. This trick reduces insects to those that either fly or fell on the structure from above, dramatically cutting back on the creepy crawlies as a whole. I hope this all helps and keep up on the great reviews. Cheers

Very nice mods, you mention it as a beginner system to which I would say it's more an evolved system. Technological innovations evolve to make functionality work optimally with the user so as an experienced outdoorsman I see this as a game changer. There is nothing I would grow towards for an intermediate or advanced solution. I agree with lessening the load for multi-day hikes so your recommendations are spot on. Thanks

Great video and tips ! I received the Safari a few weeks back and they have definately beefed up the material on both hammock and tarp. It is far too heavy for back packing, but great for car camping. My only 'complaint' is the amount of time it takes to blow the mattress up. I have a pump, but the amount of inflating with the sack, to get the pad firm enough so that it doesn't 'V' , is time consuming. Other than that, as a system and comfort wise, myself, wife and kids love it.

I bought some 3/16 inch synthetic cable...aka that winch rope. 30 ft of it. I run that straight and snug. I then attached two carabiners to the rope. It has a 4800 lbs rating. I hook.the hammock to the same exact spot on the synthetic winch rope. So it sits/hangs at the same exact tightness every single time. I did this to easy the set up and also saw that some had their hammocks rip due to pulling against the tightness of the hammock. This should not happen if you have the center rope in the hammock adjusted right. But using only one rope to hang your hammock from has proven to be quicker set up and take down. And zero guessing on where and how tight to hand it

I was wondering the exact thing if this would be a good option for a small dual sport bike for Moto camping to get off the ground. but reviews are mixed so not sure

Did you see the new Safari model that they have in their Kickstarter? Looks like a beefed up version of the XL.

I have been thinking about a haven tent. I don’t think XL will be durable enough. I think the Safari version and I am going to use my 10x10 D&D hammock tarp a lot more a therm a rest sleeping pad. Also heard that haven sleeping pads leaking. A bunch of more upgrades I am not using haven hardware either I am also going to use Dutchwear hardware and straps. I live in Florida so I will be weather proofing before I even use the hammock. Thanks for your information and good idea about havens upgrade you have done.

You mentioned moving the mule tape to the top and another line below the netting to reduce stress on the zipper. Would love to see a detailed video on that. I used my xl for the first time this weekend and was afraid i was going to break the zipper it was so tight while inside the hammock.

Just got mine this weekend and felt the same way. That zipper is under a lot of tension. Has me worried. But what a great sleep!

Wonder if you could improve the haven 20D tarp by soaking it in a bucket of waterproofing (like solvent diluted silicone?)

I have the xl and the it's nice I like it but the only problem is the pad that came with it does not stay inflated properly and the tarp is not water proof,,,it gets a lot of condensation on the inside and underneath the tarp,,,it definitely needs a better pad and better tarp

Those are all great hacks, however I've been through 2 havens and it's because of the cheap pockets the poles go in. The pole went thru the pocket and out the side off the hammock. Watch the pockets and you'll see the stress signs on the pockets themselves. Now in all fairness when I contacted Haven about the first one they replaced it right off, No hassles, but with the second one I just gave up. Good luck.

I have trouble with my Haven setup folding in on itself lengthwise like a taco. I have the Haven air mattress and obviously the poles, but what else could be going wrong?

Great video, how do you keep the bubble wrap from shifting? I used a Thermorest and it moves, but i am a turner. You would think a 4 rating would be enough but no way. I have a zero degree Quilt and you are right it does not work below 40. Thinking a 30 degree bag with the quilt would get me more flexibility but more weight. I've been in major rain and not a drop got in. Maybe a cheap square bag would hold the mat. This is much better than the ground. cheers.

can you please add a picture of the endtip of your carbon fiber poles? Curious if they are rubber/plastic caps that go on the outside of the pole or are they metal domed inserts that go on the inside of the pole. Also, did you order the 600 or 710 size carbon? thanks
@papatechie
@papatechie 9 месяцев назад
Not sure how to add pic, but they are 600 at 23" each when together and 3.6oz total weight for both with plastic/ rubber caps that go over the outside

@@papatechie I use it under the pad. It works well to reflect the heat generated from the insulated pad, back at you, and the cold from the tent floor away from you.
