Fantastic work as usual. I find your videos very informative as well as therapeutic. Great job, thanks Adam 👍🏻

Did you know that many CPO's recommend their machinist mates watch your work for additional training. I sat through a 30 min safety meeting that spent most of the time talking about your videos. Then 5 min going over TMDR records. We were in the middle of nowhere, on station, and you are more popular than porn. Thanks for the content, keep up the very practical training.

As usual, beautiful work. As a mostly self taught machinist, got my worn out South Bend 9” Lathe in 1964, moved up to bigger, better iron over the years. Two take away, nice to see I was doing things right most of the time, but the best advice I picked up, how go get to the final dimension with the divide by two method, final two cuts the same depth. I just watched another RU-vid machine channel where he tried to “sneak up on it” and overshot every time. I used to do that! Thank you.

Geez Adam, you make everything you do look like a piece of cake. Obviously this isn't exactly a challenging thing to do LOL, but still I love watching a pro (you) work on things, it's impressive no matter what you do. You make it look like it's nothing. I know it's a very basic thing for someone with your expertise, but still. Hell, even I could probably do this if I had the tools... especially w/ the DRO - granted it'd take me a LOT longer. Because I'd make myself practice it on a scrap before even thinking of doing it to someone's lathe tailstock But still, center the piece on the DRO, use center drill and mark one spot, move 120* then repeat, move another 120* and do it again. Then drill it out, move 120, drill again, move 120, drill last hole. Tap hole, move 120, tap next hole, move 120 again tap last hole. Keep the good videos coming man, I watch every single one that you make!

I would have bored the bore a little short so the nut bottomed inside so the thrust went thru the nut body and not the nut flange. Maybe you did but I couldn't tell. Either way for a little lathe it will be fine, I just like to make everything as heavy duty as I can. :-)

A question comes to mind watching the end of the video... was an operation left out of it or not yet performed ?.. Shouldn't the keyway be extended to the brass nut and allow for the quill to be installed in and removed from the tailstock ?
@paulnels108
@paulnels108 5 лет назад

@blazinmaryjane03
@blazinmaryjane03 5 лет назад
The tailstock on one of the machines where I work has the quill installed from the hand wheel end of the tailstock. With the wheel removed, there is a captive plate with a couple machine screws to prevent the quill from coming out unintended.
@blazinmaryjane03
@blazinmaryjane03 5 лет назад
Also, the brass plate on the end, like the one Abom79 made, prevents the quill from being overextended and falling out of the operator end.
@comictrio
@comictrio 5 лет назад
A keyway isn't needed in the brass insert. The three screws are enough to hold the threaded insert from pushing out or spinning in place.
@adambacon8874
@adambacon8874 5 лет назад
Someone sent him the tailstock if I remember right and he wanted an ACME thread in it if I'm not mistaken. He has another video on the project with more information in it about what it's used for (wood lathe I think) and the guy wanted more precision I think it was.

@@jdsharp5036 Very cool. I mostly worked large boring mills with up to 20 ft tables and 4 head milling up to 63 feet. Pipe line compressors and ships engines were most of the work although Saturn 5 exhaust parts came along once in a while. In retirement now I just have a wee 8 in swing belt drive lathe that I am always amazed at what it can do. I must admit retirement sucks eh.

You're the luckiest guy I know Adam. You got that beautiful machine shop and it's everything in the world that you need. I know that sounds silly but I'm dying and despite the fact that I bought a woman a house because I was supposed to live there as well for the rest of my life which isn't going to be long I bought her a car I fixed your credit so she could have the house put in her name she ended up kicking me out LOL isn't that awesome? After all I did for her she kicked me out and on top of everything she stole all my woodworking equipment! All I had was my machines and now all I have is a lathe and a piece of junk Chinese meal that ain't worth a square to piss. I got a tiny garage that only holds those two items and I have nothing to look forward to in my life anymore except for dying. Never take it for granted what you have because it's a whole hell of a lot. I will never be able to replace anything financially I am strapped now after spending all my life savings on getting her a safe place to live because I didn't want her to be out on the street when I died. I would have thought that if there's a God in heaven he would have smiled on me for doing that apparently I was wrong

Another good video Adam. I understand the usefulness of ACME threads, but I am very curious about TPI. It looks like the threads per inch are less than half of the original. Doesn't this reduce the fine positioning ability of the tailstock?
