In this series we are going to be increasing the tailstock travel from 2" to around 3 1/2" all by modifying the original quill and screw. Drawings can be found below. PLEASE WATCH INTRO TO THIS VIDEO FOR A WORD ABOUT LENGTH OF SCREW AND OPERATION OF PARTS IN THESE PLANS!!

Good to see you're healthy! Especially with the news we're getting from your area.

Thanks for this detailed tutorial. I have a 1936 9C. Mine doesn’t even have measurements on the quill. This upgrade is now on my to-do list. :)

Looks like a good mod. The file backing emery is a good tip

My old Mueller has 9" available travel. Big, heavy tailstock, you don't want to be having to move it often.

Neat mod. I see your still using my modified children’s paint cups

Would the right sized ball bearing placed in the tailstock before inserting a tangless tool allow it to eject without having to make modify the tangless tool?

It should. Only problem I see is remembering to insert the ball before your tooling

This is going to require.modifying the quill screw anyway so it's not a big deal.

What you could have done was cut a internal with a standard thread. Then chase it with the ACME tapo.

First, I enjoy your videos and appreciate your character. I don't understand why you use sandpaper to attain final dimension. Isn't the tool bit supposed to do that? And leave an acceptable finish. If you must use sandpaper do it with some oil (don't be sloppy, just a little.) to contain the grit and float the chips. Finest paper won't clog. Cuts quicker too. Sounds like either your end gears or tumblers are not set up with the correct lash. Too jingly. The tumbler lash is adjustable on SB9's without the plunger. like yours. They are the quietest SB9's. I have both kinds and I know. But both of mine are much quieter. Check that out. OK? You'll like your lathe better I promise. Correct adjustment will be the quietest. Back gears too. Also consider learning to feel and slide your mike as you remove it from the part. Just refine the way you do that. Don't just yank it away. I am considering this mod. You can buy a threaded insert replacement for the quill on eBag if you don't want to invest in the tap. Press it in. Hope you don't mind my critique and Bless you.
