Taiwan's Indigenous Peoples, Briefly Explained

Taiwan's population is today over 90% Han Chinese. But their arrival to the island comes relatively late in history. I have written a bit about this in a prior article, but Taiwan's Han Chinese first began settling on the island some 400 years ago.
Taiwan island however at the time was not unoccupied. Taiwan's early Han Chinese settlers soon found themselves in conflict with Taiwan's aborigines, the island's first inhabitants. This video briefly goes over the history of these unique and special peoples as a whole.

I am a Native American, so from my point of view, the first " foreigner intrusions" were the Han Chinese settlers and then the Manchurian Empire. ( That's why the Han called the indeginious people "barbarian" in other words foreign.) The Dutch were the third after the Manchurians. Indeginious Formosans are Austronesian. Not Sinitic ( Chinese) or Tungusic/ Altaic ( Manchurian) . Related to Filipinos, Malays, and other pacific islanders. No linguistic or cultural relationship to Han Chinese. I was listening to this as I was in Chinatown getting a haircut. The barber spoke to me in Chinese she said, "I was not sure if you were a foreigner or not" . I was smiling and I answered back in Chinese with a smile " How can I be a foreigner? I was born in America. I'm a Native indeginious American. You are the lao why". To us Navajo, everyone is a "lao why". We both laughed. Han hegemony because of the language is insidious. People will call you a lao why on your own native land. Much like they have assumed the mantle and distinctiveness of the Manchurian Empire and relegated them into an internal ethnicity. The autonomy and distinctiveness of the native Taiwanese is relegated to only being a chapter in Han Chinese history. Would love to hear the Native Taiwanese perspective. I studied Chinese in Taiwan by the way, and the Han Chinese there always treated me like I was a "Hua Chiao". Fond memories.

I wish people talked more about how the Aborigines were abused and colonized along with the cruel injustices that they faced--by the Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese. My father was born and raised in Taipei and he said that he wasn't taught about how the indigenous people were oppressed. They deserve to have their history and struggle be fully represented.

Historical cause At that time, the Xia Dynasty had not been established, and there was no concept of a country. Before the Xia Dynasty, some brown races in Fujian developed slowly, and the Central Plains culture did not involve the Fujian region. Around the Spring and Autumn Period, the first slavery country, the "Kuo Lou Kingdom", was established in Fujian. Until the early years of the Qin Dynasty, after the Qin destroyed Chu and Yue, it continued to invade the Fujian region. At that time, the southernmost point of the Yue Kingdom was Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, and further south was the category of the "Bulou Kingdom". "The Kingdom of Bulou" all over the country desperately resisted the invasion of the Qin Dynasty, but it was ultimately defeated. Part of the brown race fled to Taiwan, and the remaining "Gulou citizens" accepted the subsidiary rule of the Qin Dynasty. After the fall of Qin, the "King of Fulou" was free again, but the time limit was short. Soon Liu Bang's army invaded the border of the Kingdom of Fulou. Due to the great disparity in power, the "Kuo Lou Kingdom" was defeated again and became a dependent country of the Han Dynasty, and was renamed "Min Yue Kingdom". In the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Minyue State was abolished and became a county. Since then, Minyue State has been destroyed and became part of the Han Dynasty. In order to disintegrate the survivors of Fujian and Vietnam, Emperor Wu of the Han killed their nobles and elders. Some of the survivors fled to the Taiwan area, while the remaining part was isolated by the northern races, and finally disappeared in the Fujian area due to various reasons. This is why modern Fujianese contain a large amount of O3 in the north and a small part of O2 in Baiyue, but not M1 and M2 in the South Island. Today's Fujianese belong to the yellow race, the descendants of the fusion of the northern Han and Baiyue people, but not the descendants of the Austronesians. The Austronesians belong to the brown race or the brown white race, and their genetics are different from the modern Fujianese.

Don't think this is an anomaly. There is an old Taiwanese saying, 「有唐山公,無唐山媽」, which means your ancestry from male side may come from China, but female side may come from indigenous people. This is due to the fact that early immigrants from China were mostly males. Also due to Taiwan's history in the 17th century, it is not surprising that some Taiwanese has foreign (i.e., non-Asian) DNA. I do not know about middle eastern specifically though.

Truth be told the Han (aided by my countrymen, the VOC) robbed the Taiwanese aboriginals of their demographics. A part of them were assimilated and the other lived in primitive conditions in the mountains, where obviously birth rates will be low compared to the Han farms in the plains of Taiwan. The VOC respected the Chinese (and Japanese) as "fellow civilized peoples", and they brought Han settlers over because they were known to be hard working, industrious and good merchants. You can easily imagine a completely native Taiwan with a 20-30 million population like today, if perhaps one of the lowland tribes came into contact with foreign technology and then conquered and fortified the coasts. Or perhaps if instead of the Qing, a western power kept control. It might have been like a smaller Philippines. I can recommend a fun and accurate book on the VOC/Koxinga period of Taiwan: Lord of Formosa.

@@guybeauregard - The US dropped “Peanut” on Taihoku like they dropped Little Boy on Hiroshima and Fat Man on Nagasaki. 2 million illegal Chinese immigrants overwhelmed and unlawfully Sinicized Japanese Taiwan, population 6 million. At such rate of illegal immigration, Mayorkas can let in 111 million illegal immigrants during Big Guy’s two terms. An ignored cautionary tale. Relevant details in my first comment. The legal aspect is Taiwan’s best defense weapon. But it must come from US-DOS to muster traction. Assume that it will be officially trotted out only once China invades militarily and the US must go as medieval on China as it did on Japan 80 years ago. But if one pays attention, although the US had betrayed Japanese Taiwan to the Chinese between October 25, 1945 and June 27, 1950, the US never betrayed its bigly Sinicized American Taiwan ever again.

Japan did not cede Taiwan to the Republic of China. They simply gave up their claim to sovereignty over Taiwan. No treaty or international agreement has settled the question of sovereignty over Taiwan. A more correct history of Taiwan after WWII is: Japan didn't cede Taiwan to Republic of China. Japan simply gave up its ruling of Taiwan. Since it's USA that defeated Japan, there were three legal options for Taiwanese then: 1. As the winner, USA took Taiwan as its nrely obtained territory. 2. Taiwan became a country by itself. 3. If Taiwanese didn't want to make their own country, they should be given a vote to determine which country they want to be part of. Unfortunately USA didn't want to take a new land and didn't bother to let Taiwanese decide their own fate (a moral mistake). Instead USA just asked Republic of China "take care of" Taiwan. And ROC took care of Taiwan by slaughtering tens of thousands Taiwanese (most of them highly educated elites) in the first two years, followed by decades of martial law rules that again excecuted or prisoned tens of thousands. This less known (to western people) history of Taiwan explains why Taiwanese don't have very fond feeling towards China. It's very much like how Ukrainian feel about Russian.

For the narrator, the word Aborigine is latin in root and you need to pronounce the 'e' at the end "/ˌabəˈrijənē/". Might as well use 'Indigenous' instead which is in vogue today. The Polynesian languages have their root from Taiwan's indigenous peoples, shown by linguistic analysis. Also, peoples have been crossing the Taiwan Strait for tens of millenia, since human migration had many peoples crossing the Taiwan Strait, where long distance ocean going vessels and navigation were devised within the safety of the large waterway. Chinese history shows exploration in the 3rd century CE. If it were left to the western world to deal with the indigenous peoples, they would had ended up only on Penghu, just as Ni'ihau is a indigenous reserve within the Hawaiian group of islands. The push of Christianity onto the indigenous everywhere in the world has profound negative effects on how they exist now.
@perretti

Left up to the western world. From what read, the Dutch seemed more sympathetic than the Chinese and Japanese. The indigenous people on Taiwan are less than 10%. Similar the Ainu in Japan, who at one time were the ruling class till the Chinese arrived in Japan. Seems the Japanese and Chinese colonizers behave exactly the same as Western or middle Eastern colonizers. And for the Christian. Christians are the only reason natives exist anywhere the Western merchants went. If it wasn’t for missionaries who went along, the merchants would have enslaved or killed everyone, because that’s the nature of merchants. If you want to see real religious damage, look at Malaysia. The Muslims to this day force the women to wear layers of cloths covering their whole body in the super hot humid climate while working.

In a nut shell the aboriginal peoples of Formosa are the various tribes of the aboriginal peoples of Northern Vietnam, Laos and the "Cantonese" speakers of southern "pre China", called the NAAMAN. They ranged as far North as Shanghia, but by Genocide by the Han were chased out of China in what would become Viet Nam (Naaman) and onto Formosa aka Taiwan. From there they spread north to Okinawa ( becoming the "dark skinned population" of Japan) and also south as the Aboriginal population of the Philippines. From both Formosa East "island hopping" these people became what we refer to and the Polynesian people spreading as far east as Eastern Islands and South Anerica. No they’re not the same. After the ice age, and then the flood, many people around the world were reduced to tiny populations isolated from one another. Around 2000-1500 BC. The earth warmed and populations started to grow. This caused migrations and technologies like metallurgy and sailing open seas started to spread out from the Steppe and the Mediterranean. Over the centuries, the cultures that received metallurgy were able to concur the Stone dependent tribes. From steppe in western China it spread east on horse back and also it seems to have spread by ship arriving in North East China. Then it went to Korea and then Japan. With the spread of metal you can see the spread of DNA. Previously isolated tribes mixed with new comers. In the case of Japan and Korea, they have similar origins and later Chinese and Steppe people migrated, invaded, colonized (whatever) into Korea and the Koreans migrated into Japan and Chinese also migrated into Japan. Which is why they look similar but still they look different. Koreans, northern Chinese are considerably taller than South East Asians like Vietnamese. They also have lighter skin than Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai etc. but even the Vietnamese, Cambodians, Thai migrated from other places and mixed. Same as western or Indo-Europeans who also migrated from the Steppe. Any culture with the horse and the Recurve bow is a result of migration from the same point of origins but the DNA of the cultures can be very different.

Is it because, they assume that they should or ought to be related to the Siberian Hans Manchurian bloodlines, or do they not actually assume that, they are aborigines? Cos if China claims aborigines... THEN.. what does that mean then ? The current people are not "chinese"... but the genuine "real chinese" were the aboriginals ?....Cos the current day "hans" are basically a mixed race individual... from all sorts of races. Actually. (And some of the "causians" were from the Ottoman Empire as well... which are classified as Turkic today.. however.. its roots are from the Eastern European areas as well.. and ties back into like the Greeks.... !!) Becareful what you wish for !

@@parisan9985 that doesn't to seem the case, more like blurred the lines of ethnic divisions through interbreeding with each other at least as far as Austronesian's are concerned. The case for the austroasiatic cultures killed most of them of is a bit more compelling.

@@ANTSEMUT1 "The only Paleolithic burial that has been found on Taiwan was in Xiaoma cave in the southeast of the island, dating from about 4000 BC, of a male similar in type to Negritos found in the Philippines. There is, indeed, much more that needs to be done to improve the lot of indigineous peoples in most nations of the world and in Taiwan you can find openness and willingness to discuss their achievements and challenges ahead. By contrast, the secrecy of the China CCP authoritarian regime's deeply disturbing persecution, genocide and organ theft of non-Han minorities in China today, is stark. Crimes against millions in the minorities like the Tibetans, Uighur and Mongolians have been documented with great difficulty and condemned by The UN Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International in 2021. The China ultra-nationalist authoritarian regime refuses to cooperate with investigations into their heartbreakingly cruel behaviour. Although a contemporary contrast of indigenous and minority treatment between the democratic nation of Taiwan and rather vile and secretive authoritarian China CCP shouldn't be framed to excuse the challenges still facing Taiwan's indigenous peoples, it can nevertheless also provide some regional perspective.

I like that Asianometry introduces indigenous Taiwanese to more people. That said, I fail to see why/how PRC's opinion towards indigenous Taiwanese matters and got mentioned at all. BTW, indigenous Taiwanese plays a very important role in Austronesian civilization. 3 out of 4 major branches of Austronesian languages originated from indigenous Taiwanese. Also if you analyze the DNA of current Taiwanese, Austronesian portion is likely more than Han portion. When you put Taiwanese, Vietnamese and northern Chinese together, it's way obvious that Taiwanese are much closer to Vietnamese. After all, the total number of Han people came to Taiwan over the centuries is still way less than the number of indigenous Taiwanese. It's simply during the interracial marriage, the Han culture dominate over the indigenous people. Han culture emphasizes heritage/ bloodline to an extreme degree that few other people can comprehend. So their offsprings are raised to know only Han heritage. Such a phenomenon still happens today. Just look at the American-Chinese ski athlete (sorry I don't remember her name) in 2020 Olympics.
