Taiwanese Business Exit China | Kunshan: From World's Factory to Ghost Town | Everyone Has Left

The county of Kunshan in Jiangsu Province, China, once held the reputation as one of the most concentrated areas of Taiwanese investment in mainland China, earning it the nickname "Little Taipei". In recent years, fueled by its robust manufacturing sector, Kunshan has maintained its position as the strongest economic powerhouse at the county level in China, even acquiring a reputation as a miniature "world factory".
The Foxconn campus in the northern part of the county, a significant contract manufacturer for Apple, has been operational for 30 years, attracting tens of thousands of young workers to engage in the assembly lines producing Apple products such as iPhones and laptops.
Nonetheless, since the onset of this year, there has been a surge in speculation surrounding not only Foxconn but also other Taiwanese firms pulling out their operations, instigating significant worry amongst the local population of about 2 million residents.

Couple of reasons: China wasn't super aggressive until Xi took power, it was on a trajectory of becoming more open before all the wolf warrior crap. Language barrier, same "spoken" language and similar culture makes it easier to setup shop. The generation who didn't experience the civil war would have a neutral or positive impression, unlike the older generation whom experienced the civil war or the newer generation whom experienced the aggressive nationalism of Xi's politics.

In short, this is a remnant of the 1990s and 2000s policies, as during the Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian and Chinese head of state Jiang Zemin the chances of an actual war seemed very low (despite the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis). During the Hu Jintao era, the Taiwanese KMT president Ma Ying-jeu attempted to deepen these ties but went too far in selling out to China, as the incoming Xi Jinping clearly didn't see him as equal, and started openly threatening with invasion following the election of the current president Tsai Ying-wen.

China as an entity, had the opportunity of cementing their role as the world’s factory if they committed to be a global citizen like other countries. Instead, what they became was a regional bully with global ambitions. Unfortunately, this is the result. Please realize that this not a broad brush on the Chinese people, but the people in power and unfortunately, their population suffers for it. China's sin was more than being a regional bully. They were also a trade/industrial predator, destroying foreign industries while protecting and subsidizing their own. Immigration and China trade were the two reasons that Trump was elected in 2016, and Xi was the first foreign leader that President Trump met. I have no doubt that Trump told him that the bilateral trade relationship was untenable and unsustainable, but Xi and China negotiated in bad faith, attempting to run out the clock on US negotiators. It wasn't until the US implemented the first round of punitive tariffs before China started to give in a little.

Russia doesn't suck as much as you've been led to believe. If you look a map that shows who controls what Russia already has everything they actually wanted and Ukraine can't gain ground. We're being lied to so the US and nato can keep the proxy war going, specially the US since it means big profits for war machine companies which of course means the stock in them owned by politicians goes up. I called this after the botched pull out of Afghanistan, we'd be fighting Russia soon after because they need to use weapons and ammo so they can buy more weapons and ammo from their buddies. The war machine keeps churning because companies have to make a profit to exist. No war means few to no sales of weapons, ammo, missiles, jets, ships and so on. Don't believe the lies. I suspect Ukraine will get split in half with half going to Russia and if the remaining half not left as a buffer then given to Poland. Ukraine is little more than a pawn for nato and Russia.

Young adults are not really into marriage and children have been pushing down birth rates while the older adults as homeowners have stopped raising kids to the legal adult age. China will get crushed by the slower rate of export consumption in the U.S. Also US retail store operations are in deep trouble related to the older adults eventually departing leaving behind decades of stuff in homes where that stuff will be free, discounted for sale and inherited. China will lose huge markets of opportunity with other economies facing demographic challenges with lower birth rates and aging senior populations curtailing spending and consumption activities. 😢 Taiwanese businesses are withdrawing from Kunshan, causing worry among the local population. 00:00 Kunshan was known as 'Little Taipei' due to its high concentration of Taiwanese investment. Kunshan has been the strongest economic powerhouse at the county level in China, known as a 'world factory'. Taiwanese investments have contributed significantly to Kunshan's prosperity, but now there is a surge in Taiwanese businesses pulling out. 📉 Suzhou's economy is severely impacted by the withdrawal of Taiwanese businesses, leading to a significant decrease in GDP growth. 04:17 Suzhou's GDP increased by only 1.9% year-on-year in the first quarter, with the secondary industry shrinking by 0.7%. The value added of industries above designated size in Suzhou city decreased by 2.7% year-on-year. Suzhou fell from the sixth place to the seventh in the national GDP rankings for the first quarter, with the second-lowest year-on-year growth rate among the top ten cities. 😔 The economic downturn in China has led to joblessness and homelessness, particularly among young individuals in Kunshan. 07:37 Many young individuals are forced to sleep in the park due to lack of affordable accommodation. Taiwanese businesses pulling out of Kunshan has contributed to the job crisis. Kunshan's high GDP is powered by numerous foreign enterprises, including Taiwanese companies. 📉 Due to a decline in factory shipments and challenging business environment in mainland China, there are no job opportunities available currently, and Taiwanese factories are diverting orders to Vietnam and India. 10:39 No jobs available due to decline in factory shipments and performance. Shipment volumes in Q1 2023 decreased by at least a third compared to last year. Taiwanese factories are diverting orders to Vietnam and India due to geopolitical tensions. 😔 Li Mengju's experience of being labeled a spy and forced to confess highlights the lack of freedom and personal safety in China. 14:49 Li Mengju would not consider going to China again unless there were significant changes. Li Mengju's life and work were interrupted for four years after taking unauthorized military pictures. Li Mengju was unjustly labeled as a 'Taiwanese spy' and forced to make a critical video confession.

What more chance you want lol. They are setting up 3 gigantic factories besides the one they have already. Foxconn alone hires over 100 k people already and will hire the same amount of people again. Literally in last 4 years, Taiwanese factories and companies rose to 800% in India. Come on lol. They are shifting exclusively to India and Vietnam. And now EV and just yesterday they got a new partner for semiconductors. That’s just one company lol.

It's stunning to me that Taiwan businesses would invest in their sworn enemy, an enemy who has repeated said that they were coming for them one day and is building the forces to do it, all while holding military exercises aii around the island practicing that invasion. Every dollar invested in China just helps fuel that military buildup. I understand business is business but you don't buy your enemy bullets for his gun.

I know ALL ABOUT what happens when you get full time workers and they aren't getting paid well AND they don't know if they can get another job. You'd THINK they'd be great workers. No, they are average workers. They don't want to move too fast because there's no incentive to and because they see manufacturing shutting down they want to make sure whatever orders the manufacturer has to fill, it takes longer to fill it.
