Sampling different sweets and Taiwanese dessert is a must in Taipei, Taiwan and one of the most famous ones worth trying is Mango Snowflake Ice also known as Mango Shaved Iced or Mango Ice Monster. Whatever the name expect copious amounts of fresh mangoes, lots of ice, panna cotta and more. It would be the perfect summer dessert although we had it just before winter ;) Doing a bit more research I believe it is know locally as Baobing or Bao Bing (刨冰 - 礤冰) or Xue hua bin (雪花冰) and two famous places worth trying it are Smoothie House (思慕昔本館) and Ice Monster.

Taiwanese Dessert - Shaved Mango Ice in Taipei, Taiwan Travel Video Transcript:
Alright guys, we are currently at Dongmen station (東門) here in Taipei (臺北市) and everytime we come here we are tempted by these amazing desserts that they have advertised all over the walls. I'm going to show you what it looks like and then I'm going to tell you all about it.
So they clearly do not skimp out on advertising. Like that entire station is plastered in ads for this dessert. And apparently this is called Mango Iced Snowflake (Baobing - 刨冰 - 礤冰). And they have two shops right outside the station so let's go eat. Let's go do it.
And like most places worth eating at here in Taipei (臺北市) there is a huge line but we're going to go stand there anyway.
Alright, so our dessert has arrived. And it is standing room only at this particular spot. So they've got like this little bar outside where you just bring your dessert, you eat it here but check this out.
So this is it. This is the Mango Snowflake Ice (Xue hua bin - 雪花冰). It is a mountain. Like this is huge. And we went for the classic so it is just mango and panna cotta on top. But I mean they probably have like ten different flavors with like strawberries and chocolate and red beans and you can choose anything really. This is also called Ice Monster in some places as well. Okay, yeah so there is two chains. There is Ice Monster (芒果冰) and Smoothie House (思慕昔本館). We're at Smoothie House (思慕昔本館) right now so let's just dig right in. Dig right in. That is amazing.
Guys we're sharing this. Like apparently at this serving size is enough for two to four people. Yeah, Sam was like we should each get our own. Horrible idea. That would have been awful.
That would have ruined dinner.
Mmmmm.
Brain freeze. Brain freeze.
Did you take too big of a bite?
That is amazing. The Mangoes are so sweet and ripe. Yep. Mmmm.
What else are you tasting though?
Oh man. It has got the mango has kind of this glaze almost. Do you taste like ice? Ice and the panna cotta?
Oh yeah. You've got your ice. Your ice mountain. Mango flavored. But seriously, the fresh mango that is like my favorite part so far. It has got like this syrupy sugar that is amazing.
And I love panna cotta. I love ordering this dessert whenever we're traveling in Italy. It is just so creamy and milky. So yeah, I'm really really pleased with this dessert.
Mmmm.
What do you think?
Oh yeah, that is really sweet. You taste. You really taste the shaved ice, you really taste the syrup and the nice big chunks or mango. Fresh mango.
It reminds me of something we had in Korea not too long ago called Sulbing (설빙).
Yeah, which is their shaved ice dessert (Bao Bing - 刨冰 - 礤冰)) and yeah it is really good. Um, I think I would enjoy this even more on a hot day as opposed to a cool one like this but it is still a lot of fun and still really enjoying it.
Yeah, I kept getting brain freezes like every second bite. That stuff was so cold. I know it was really cold. Eating cold shaved ice on a cold day. Probably not the best strategy in life but anyways yeah it was two hundred and ten Taiwan dollars which is under just under seven US dollars. So I mean if you divide it by two people it is like three dollars and fifty cents. Not bad. Not bad value. It is not the cheapest dessert but I think it is really good. It is really filling. It is one of the top 40 things you've got to eat in Taipei (臺北市) according to CNN. Well there you go. So yeah, it is worth trying and yeah let us know what you think when you give it a shot.
This is part of our Travel in Taiwan video series showcasing Taiwanese food, Taiwanese culture and Taiwanese cuisine.

This dessert is actually called Shaved Snow (雪花冰), which is different from the traditional Shaved Ice (刨冰 or 冰沙). 雪花冰 is lighter and has more of a milky consistency to it, versus the traditional shaved ice, which is just shaved ice, usually served with condensed milk and toppings. You can see the difference when you google both terms :)

Mango is actually summer fruit, but the farmers are very smart to grow in winter. So we could eat Mango ices in any season.

Ice Monster and Smoothie House used to be the same shop. But the owners, a couple, got divorced. So the wife got the original shop location (s) and the husband got the Ice Monster brand. The wife renamed her shop, Smoothie House and got her own investors. The husband moved Ice Monster to a different location and changed the menu a bit. Both have expanded internationally. Ice Monster is a bit more famous due to the brand, but Smoothie House is building its own following as well.

Thanks for sharing that. I'm glad both brands are doing well. Normally a split like that only favors one person but not both.

You both have given me so many great ideas for visiting Taipei and hitting up the night markets. The mango ice and papaya milk look so refreshing. You should place Switzerland on your radar sometime! BTW I’m a new follower of your RU-vid channel and really enjoy your love of travel and new foods!

I love shaved ice desserts rather than the one with ground ice. the shaved ice just melts in your mouth and you don't need to chew on ice. hahahaha. hope you could visit the Philippines and try our delicacies and desserts here. :)
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 7 лет назад
Thank you! Totally agree with you. Do they have something similar in the Philippines? What is the name?
@uselessbandaid
@uselessbandaid 7 лет назад
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos we have something similar but its not shaved ice. usually they use crushed ice. we have Saging con Yelo / Caramelized Banana on Ice and condensed or evaporated milk, Mais con Yelo / Sweetened Creamed Corn on Ice with condensed or evaporated milk, and the Halo-Halo which consits of a variety of toppings like sweetened mung beans, sweetened chick peas, sweetened white beans, Jelly cubes, coconut meat, coconut jelly, flan, ube (purple yam), ice cream with condensed or evaporated milk. I like them all but I wish they are served on shaved ice rather than crushed ice. hahahahaha. ;)

is the shaved ice just ice made of water or is there some flavoring? I always wondered when I seen these. is it different than korean shaved ice? it almost looks like there is a cream on it. also who does most of the answering of questions? keep up the great videos you 2. thanks for aslways keeping it personal with us fans by answering questions :) can't wait for the next video
@samuelandaudrey

It is very similar to Sulbing from Korea; however, one of the big differences is that you have less ingredients with the ones we tried in Taiwan. Just found this recipe for Taiwanese shaved ice from a google search: Shave the ice cubes or crushed ice in a blender. Divide the shaved ice equally into 4 ice cream cups. Add 1 tablespoon condensed milk and 2 tablespoons syrup into each shaved ice. Top each shaved ice with 1/4 portion of diced mango, 1/4 portion kiwi, and 1/4 portion of strawberry. From Rasa Malaysia
@jimmitheflowerhornandfrien1547
wow thank you! idk why I did not think to google it.. haha.. duh
