He ran with it... he picked West Virginia because it had the correct number of syllables. If you listen to the lyrics the song describes western Virginia (the Shenandoah Valley) and the song was inspired/written while on a country road in Maryland. I find it funny that West Virginia was like, ‘nah, this is ours now.’
When I was in Navy bootcamp this is a song that brought all of us males together and helped us get through those 8 weeks and brought us closer together as a family and at the end all of us graduated together and the first thing we did was sing the day of graduation it gave us more motivation. Beautiful song.

WV is truly "almost heaven." Often people don't appreciate a place until they live in other places, and I know how much more I appreciate WV and so grateful that I grew up in a place where people were friendly and got to know their neighbors. After 25 years away, I am moving back to "almost heaven!"
