Taking a crane to it's limits - crane jib installation

To The Top Crane | Building a 310 foot tall cell tower with the Tadano 180g-5. The crane boom length was 320 feet with a tip height of 330 feet. We achieve these heights by using 197 feet of main boom length and 123 feet of jib length. This is the longest boom length available with this crane. Based on the boom configuration, every lift was almost at capacity. Definitely no room for error of any kind.

In that configuration, the tip of the boom is 330 feet high. Or the length of a football field with both endzones.

Operated cranes( etc.) for 43ish years, seen a lot. Not all good. Used to want to operator big bad cranes when younger but I 've changed. It's just not fun anymore. Mostly run brodersons in plants now making more money than ever and home every night. Remember, that's what it all about, being home with family. Be safe.

Great job with your video productions.I find them very entertaining and educational. I’m very curious about how you actually move the boom when it is maxed out, like on this job.My main question is, if the boom angle is at 75 degrees and the signal man wants you to boom down a few degrees, how do you avoid boom whip? Are your hydraulic controls so fine tuned , that you can boom down without imposing dynamic force on the crane?One other question is, would the safety systems on your Taranto 180g-5 prevent you from going into a danger zone on your charts?

The stresses on that piston must be just incredible! Just the one for boom up and down looks kinda wimpy from a long way off. I'd have ulcers running a crane like that. I got nervous just seeing the raised boom for the distant shot. Just enough to reach, not a lot to spare was there. Scary stuff if you ask me. Thanks for the video.
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 6 лет назад
The boom cylinder has a pretty large bore. I'm guessing 16 inches or so. But yes, the pressures in that cylinder must be enormous. I suppose if we really are curious, I can measure the cylinder tomorrow and calculate the internal pressures. Believe me, I was nervous too. There is no room for error. Also, there is a lot of calculations that go on before the crane is even set up. I had to stay within a certain distance from the center of the tower. If I was too close, I wouldn't be able to boom up high enough, and if I was too far away, I wouldn't have enough tip height.
@63256325N
@63256325N 6 лет назад
I sure you don't leave a lot to chance, in fact I'm sure you leave _none_ ! That's not the kind of thing one goes in blind on. I think my head would explode doing the math to calculate the stresses. Thanks for the reply.

Dig Byck, as long as I keep the crane inside of its load charts, any amount of deflection is allowed. What would cause a problem, is if I was overloading the crane.

That is one monstrous crane you operate there. I am totally blind and the closest thing I can get to operating one of these is a 1/16 scale toy. However for a toy it’s still pretty large. It has a 3 foot boom, and a jib piece that can make it go up to over 5 feet. I don’t have any videos of it right now however this summer I’m going to be taking the counter wait for my crane to the beach with me and filling it full of sand because right now it is empty. Then when I get back I’m going to be testing it out to see how much I can lift with the counterweight. I’ve been doing the RU-vid thing for about four years now and I’ll be happy to help you with anything you might need to know.
@ToTheTopCrane
@ToTheTopCrane 6 лет назад
+Alex Williamson'sadventures, I'll check out your channel. Being that you are blind, is there anything I can do in my videos for you to get more enjoyment out of them? Meaning, should I be more descriptive about the jobs or how the crane is configured? Thank you for tuning in. 🙂
