Taking Caffeine out of Coffee

Done just for fun. If you want caffeine it is far easier to just extract it from caffeine pills.
Also you could likely purify the end product through sublimation rather than recrystallization.
Materials Required:
-Coffee
-Chloroform
-Diethyl Ether
Key Hazards: Chloroform is toxic and a suspected carcinogen, diethyl ether is extremely flammable

You can filter through activated charcoal to remove coloration.

I considered to recommend that, too. I tried it with the extract in ethyl acetate, but it didn't work. So maybe it's better to do this already with the strong hot coffee beforehand and separate the caffaine from the filtrate with the help of a solvent afterwards. But I have to admit that I don't know if the caffaine itself would also be absorbed by the activated charcoal...
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry Год назад
yeah caffeine being absorbed by the charcoal was also my concern, but definitely going to try if I do something like this again.. I think I underuse activated carbon lol

for a much cheaper solution to quick solvent distillations you could look into short path distillation, way cheaper than a rotovap but with vacuum assistance is still good.

Lol this comment finally pushed me to go ahead and buy a short path distillation unit. I've had my eye on one for ages but didn't have enough reasons to get one, but using it in that manner honestly made it worth.

Me watching this video so I can find out how to make peppermint caffeine gum.

you are very magnificent. I've learned a lot from you. I want to ask for your help. Please can you make a video on the synthesis of theophylline? With easy reagents

Thank you so much!! I haven't heard of that chemical, but I'll write it down right now and start looking into making it. I always appreciate a challenge

@@integral_chemistry Thank you very much for your help. I have not been able to manufacture theophylline and there is very little information

Would like to see lactic acid fermentation of lactate to produce propionic acid. I'm trying it with powdered milk and some sugar. There are cultures available for making Swiss cheese that have the enzyme but I'm trying lab from milk at room temp. Many carbon sources can be fed to the system to produce propionic or butyric acid but this is the first try. Also i would like to see your styrene extraction continued to form ethyl benzene and maybe polimerized again to go full circle.

Where do we get chloroform

Caffeine is get pure white only by sublimation. Probably consequent sublimation directly from coffee powder is the best.
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry Год назад
Honestly that's true. This process was honestly unpleasant and I'd definitely never recommend this method if you wanted caffeine lol. I also considered sublimation, but I worried I would decompose a significant quantity of product.
@experimental_chemistry
@experimental_chemistry Год назад
@@integral_chemistry Sublimation is more a small scale method here for the purpose of detection, but not for the production of significant amounts.

You can purify coffee by sublimation in inert atmosphere (CO2 or N2 should work).

Good idea! 👍 A beaker on the hotplate with a round bottom flask filled with ice cold water on top might already work, too. But the charcoaled impurities left behind are very difficult to remove afterwards, very aggressive cleaners like piranha solution or a melt of potassium nitrate are necessary for that.
@experimental_chemistry
@experimental_chemistry Год назад
@@user255 Better than purifying coffee is drinking expresso right from the start... 😂
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry Год назад
would the inert atmosphere be to avoid decomposition of the caffeine, or to avoid the leftover byproducts from becoming fused to the beaker?
@experimental_chemistry
@experimental_chemistry Год назад
@@integral_chemistry Only caffeine will sublimate not the charcoaled impurities. Inert gas will prevent oxidizing caffaine, but I didn't perceived it as a big problem so far because with the recommended simple setup there is little access of fresh air to it anyways.

I certainly did NOT know that, that you could put a dash of bicarbonate in there and get more caffeine. I'm going to try that in my own coffee, at home. Maybe just a dash of baking soda just to see the difference.
@integral_chemistry
@integral_chemistry Месяц назад
I tried it once lol. Definitely made a difference and cut some of the bitterness, but it is VERY easy to go overboard. You just want a super tiny pinch

@integral_chemistry sweet. I really had a hunch that something like a toothbrush use amount would do. It's about all I would try, given the flavor on the brush, hehe. I enjoyed your tutorial because of the sep funnel solvent difference between water and chcl3. I don't know why I doubted water's efficacy, or think I did. There is a reason why life uses water. Ohhh, check THIS out! So I went onto Google one day, inspired by ice I-xxvix or whatever high number we are at right now and wondered, "what if water creates other molecules we wouldn't outright recognize as water if we could see under an electron microscope?" Turns out water is such an interesting substance that H2O sometimes is stuff like H3O6 or H40O2O, for lame example because I don't remember how many atoms of H there were in the polymer thaT it must also be creating, but know that it must be twice as much H per O. It's a fascinating read on science direct. One day we will see even more potential from the substance that I can't even imagine. Thanks for the video ❤️

It's just the way I speak, but I am aware its not the most pleasant thing to listen to for the auditorily-inclined so I'm working on it.. Hopefully in a year it'll be gone.
