taking delivery of my Brand New Tri-Axle Dump Truck 

Last year we bought a Kenworth t470 hooklift truck with an automatic. We would have preferred a manual transmission but the truck was for sale at the right price. After using an automatic 5 days a week you really are glad you have it. The hooklift is the best thing ever. Drop a bin where you need one and the truck can keep working somewhere else. Were in Southern Ontario and it's hard to find truck drivers here too so that's why we went with the hooklift. The truck only needs one driver and can be used at multiple job sites.

As someone who formerly drove OTR trucks and now an Environmental, Health and Safety administrator/instructor, I have to say you made the right decision for what you’re doing with it. As you had stated,, the workload on the driver is much less which allows them to focus more so on the actual driving portion of their trip. I would also add that it reduces fatigue, especially when operating the vehicle within the city or on congested highways/interstates in major cities. If you had been performing heavy haul jobs I would have to say the standard would probably serve you better having access to the Lo-Lo gear and the 18 speed Allison manual trans. Again, great choice!!!

What a difference in equipment, looking at your picture from 1990 to today's truck. I worked for Twin then installing hydraulics, Turner air lifts and the dump boxes. I know exactly what the 1990 truck had compared to today. Mind blowing!

Not a lot of local truck drivers miss shifting gears around here (Quebec). It is also extremely difficult to find talented drivers so the more comfort and productivity we can gain the best interest it is for everyone. Another con would be the added weight versus a manual transmission but again, compared to the gains of the driver being less fatigued and probably less grumpy by the end of the week this is not even a comparison to make anymore. Super truck by the way, hope your driver will take good care of it.

all depends on what your using it for, if you get auto or manual, a lot of stop and go auto is best , cross country i would go manual . still its your company get what fits your company best . Congrats KWC Team

I really ♡♡♡ that Western Star with Allisson automatic transmission. I think Allisson is the best automatic transmission made in North America, It's better than Eaton Fuller Ultra Shift. You made the right decision.

Congrats KWC Team. Sweet looking Western Star 4700SB. Automatics have came along way from were they used to be. It's kind of reverse of what it used to be. Seen more manuals back in the day, now you are seeing more Automatics instead of manuals.

i work for a top 10 LTL carrier who runs all 50 states and canada with 4000 trucks.We have 80% automated manuals now and everyone who talked bad about them years ago has one now and loves it.The mileage is very close to manuals and pretty much no maintenance problems with the transmissions of either.We run kenworth,freightliner,and mack.I still run a manual in city pickup and delivery and can't wait to get an automatic but atlas with a older manual i dont have to worry about getting slip seated.We had automatics in the military 20 years ago so they are proven workhorses.

Very nice. Even with the shortage of drivers I would be very careful as to who I let drive my truck. Just because someone can operate an automatic does not mean they can drive a truck. I know you can say the same about a stick shift but the influx of automatic transmissions has meant a lot of companies just throw a warm body behind the wheel and hope for the best. Good luck.

I think automatic transmissions really have their place on highway trucks, like you said theres less to worry about and the big factor is you can throw anyone in the truck and not worry about grinding gears etc. However, I think if you're running mountainous terrain like where I'm at you really need the manual to have complete control as the automatics shift around to much and end up having to regain power a lot of the time where as the manual can just lock it in and hold it there. Also I have found that the autos will not take you the places a manual can as they will only power down for so long. Had a truck bring lime out and he couldn't go where a manual truck could go, truck didn't spin or anything, it just quit.

Yes “Caitlyn Jenner” autos are nice to drive. I don’t know if I can drive one every day. I would miss the shifting picking when you want to upshift and downshift. Overall for a company automatic should be cheaper to maintain no grinding gears missing gears etc. congratulations KWC TEAM!!! Nice truck I really like the western stars

I seen your IG post we have a 4700SB, the interior is more "Freightliner" compared to the 2014 we have. The Tuff trac rear suspension good off road, rides rougher than Hendrickson spring suspension. We had a 9500 Sterling with tuff trac good off road hauled loads okay the other 9500 we have with Hendrickson extended leaf handles loads better rides a little better. Air ride sucks shit the 4700SB we have has air liner awful off road rolls like the love boat on the highway. NEVER EVER would I own an air ride dump truck anybody that says air ride is better than springs doesn't know what off road work is. The 4700 has the 6spd Allison ya its nice not to shift but I wouldn't own a truck with one it has too many cons. Horrible for off road work decending 14% offroad grades it free wheels, on road there is no happy medium there isn't enough gears. It makes the DD13 feel like a gutless pig a 470hp engine shouldn't feel like a 300hp engine, out in BC we gross 26,100kgs on a tandem lift axles are prohibited. The 4700SB feels like a tin can with wheels they are a light weight truck nothing really feels solid, dump trucks are never legally loaded we've grossed 29,000kgs the odd time or two the 4700 doesn't like it. Will the 4700 serve you will most likely your truck doesn't see heavy off road work, mostly pavement with no steep grades your never overloaded. You want a tough truck the 4700 isn't it you need the 4900 with DD16 power, double framed, 18spd manual or the automatic 18spd. I would rather spend the day in the 14 year old 9500 Sterling than I would in the 6 year old 4700SB. Freightliner is really pushing the 4700 WS luring customers in with a "cheap" price after a while the customer wishes they bought the 4900. Out West here a tandem axle dump makes 110 per hour the average owner operator was making 5500 a week before the corona BS now most guys are parked.

Not a huge fan of automatic, as a 20 year truck driver. Doing the same type of work as you near Toronto. But its way better then auto shift. It has very good control while dumping and driving. You can drive and operate hoist stop and start again. Something you cant do with manual or auto shift. We put the automatic in all the hooklift rolloffs for that reason. Only real downfall we have is fuel economy. Automatic runs a lot higher rpms.

Automatics are the way to go in a 10 wheeler + dump truck now, i bought a international recently with a auto and love it

The only bad thing is the tarp. Seems you like to build your trucks heavy duty. Pioneer Tarp systems are the strongest. I think it would of looked so much better on this truck. But people usually cheap out on the Tarp Systems. Other than that the truck is Sweet.

agree with you on the model choice as the 4900 is the same as the pickup packages, overpriced chrome. one thing i would point out is you would've liked a tri drive setup more so then the tandem drive and one dead axle setup on this truck. that would be if you haul pups or quad wagons

allison automatic are bulletproof. I run 4 quad axle dumps with them for 10 years so far. Never had a problem.

theres no way to go wrong with an Alison trans like that. if it was a different trans than maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea but an Alison trans is the way to go. i didn't even know that you could still buy dump trucks without airbags. also what made you choose western star over a different brand?

Im kinda new to this stuff but what's the difference between a triaxle and a regular tandem and why would you pick one or the other is it distributing the weight over more wheels

Dude those bumps and knocks take years of your life. Go with air ride next time. This is coming from an older trucker.No free lunch in that department. Awesome truck though congrats!

First one of your vids I've seen. I subscribed right away. Can''t wait ti hear all the truck numbers and more about the Allison auto. Am very curious of the price differential manual 18 vs. Allison Auto. But, autos are the way to go period!
