Today we're taking down dead, tall, rotten, heavy leaning Maple Trees with the Stihl MS462C chainsaw and 28" bar. I ran out of lift on my wedges and had to quickly use a bottle jack on the fly to get the tree over with a heavy 10 ft lean over the road. This video is for entertainment purposes only and is not a how to fell a tree video. Enjoy!
Thanks for following along on this journey as we bring this abandoned farm back to what it used to be 200 years ago and more!

Thanks! I think I could spend a week doing this and still have a month to go it seems. Way too many dead trees on the farm. Have a good weekend as well!

Nicely done, that last one was a workout (road behind and weight towards house equals even more stress, good to have that experience under your belt). You've gotten really good with the grapple, I'd bet you could save some driving by dropping the first load of branches you pick up onto the next pile and then picking them all up together (yes, I really enjoy trying to over-stuff my grapple almost every chance I get). Appreciated the back story Lauren gave about what was there before and how much you two have cleared out, it's easy to forget what it looked like before. It would be great if you could show a few before and current photos or video clips of that side & back yard area, now that you have cleared out so much. Enjoyed the video, the next big trees should be exciting 👍

Thanks! The second tree was not fun, but glad it’s down. I need to add some teeth to my grapple to give it some more grip. I’ve found when I grab too much it sort of squeezes it out if that makes sense. Lauren and I were looking back through photos from the past two years at everything we’ve done. Sometimes you forget and need to take a step back. I’ll definitely try and stick some pictures and old videos we have of what things used to be. Such big changes!

Well done! I’m not going to critique…I’d have done it differently but, you got it done!!🎉 The second tree was absolutely a different animal because there was a lot of weight in the roadside but…yea….success and you just saved yourself a couple thousand at the least!! That’s great firewood for your fire pit too!! That grapple is a real game changer!!!! You’re really mastering that implement!! The Mrs. is funny!! What they don’t know is, on the inside, is guys are doing the same thing…we just don’t vocalize it like they do!!🤣🤣 The only thing I’ll say is…try to never leave your saw in the tree because when it comes off the stump, your saw drops and the tree can drop right on top of your saw and crush it. Hope your plastic wedges came in! That metal splitting wedge would be ugly if you touched it with the chain! When I was a kid working with my Dad, we had all wood wedges…plastic ones didn’t exist yet…I’ll always remember those wood wedges with pieces missing out of them from chain hits. But wedges are consumable…still prefer the wood over plastic but, they can be a challenge to find in the woods!!😁 Great job!! A real confidence builder but never get TOO confident!! Every tree is different! But they are all fun!! Now how long before your neighbors stop by and say…”I’ve got this tree….”🤣🤣👍🏻

The grapple has quickly become an extension of my hand. It makes such a difference in cleanup. Next up are the mighty oaks! Once it stops being so windy.

I was watching the top of the second one as you were cutting, wasn't moving much and you got close to your hinge it looked like! Be careful on the big dead oaks! They can be very rotten on the inside and not leave you much of a hinge. If they are leaning toward your property, after you cut your notch, do a plunge cut and work the cut backward, this will create a trigger. You will know how rotted the center is when you cut your wedge. Hopefully, it is 6" or more from the outside to the edge of the rot inside if it is rotted! Maybe put a ratchet strap around the tree two feet up from your cut to try to eliminate a barber-chair situation. Not a how to, just something I would think about.

Rot is the one thing I’m worried about. The bigger of the two still has a few branches alive, so that’s giving me some hope that it will be alright. We’ll see how the smaller of the two look once it’s down and definitely will inspect the bigger one. Thanks for the heads up!
