It's no secret that I've been uploading vlogs less frequently lately. As quiet as I've been online, I've actually been pretty busy these last few months. I've been teaching a lot about Premiere Pro with Adobe in partnership with TikTok, and even released a 4-part training series with Adobe for OFFF festival, along with some extra commercial work on the side. It's been a great experience, but I'm glad to once again have the time for making my own things.
As much as I've been desperate to create vlogs for the channel and other video ideas, but I must admit, I've really struggled with feeling inspired lately. My mood and motivation has been yo-yoing all over the place and as much as I've attempted to piece together some vlogs; the success of completing one is fragile.
In order to try and beat my block, I've attempted to turn my photography into a bit of a challenge and gamify things with some limitations. In this latest photography vlog in London, I've decided to take JPEGs only with my Fuji X-T4. No raw photos. Everything image you see has been edited using the built-in camera settings and controls. This process has allowed me to focus purely on the mechanics of taking a photo, without any time required for editing. It's been truly refreshing to experience photography this way, and I'm genuinely blown away by these JPEGs straight out of camera!
I will definitely be following up on this with more in this style!

Gamify idea: 36 exposures at one ISO setting, and one single set of film simulation settings. I did this a few times, was fun.

The "fine" setting for Fuji JPGs use a lower compression ratio. As JPG uses a "lossy" form of compression this means that the fine setting gives higher quality images. (I just checked the user manual and it confirms this!)

Thank Christ, YESSS Joe! I was worried that this was going to be another recipe video. I don't think I have seen a photo on RU-vid that isn't from a muddy brown-green "Portra" recipe in weeks. I was starting to think my phone was stuck in night light mode. 🙌 Also, the EVF is a different white balance from the LCD entirely. I find mine is more warm and green. The LCD is a bit warmer too. I kind of wish they would colour calibrate the LCD at least, but I also don't want to pay more for it, haha. 😂 😬

You are correct. Different photo processing software produce different results from the same file. We all know the problems Adobe LR had dealing with XTrans files. The best one to use is the one from the camera manufacturer, since they know the codecs exactly.

I would recommend a rear flip down cowling over the back screen. You might need your reader glasses because you'll have to get really close to it. And you'll have to figure out how to attach it with harmless tape.The reason I like my raw and jpeg on the same card is the preview the jpeg gives me on my computer. (I can't open raw myself on my old Imax system, I have to outlab) If I like a jpeg enough to want to print it, naturally I can use my raw. It only takes me a couple minutes in Photoshop to match my outlabbed raw to my jpeg.

Wow, that was a great video. I heard a lot about the really good quality of the jpeg from fuji, but never tried. I also shoot with a fuji xt4 and among others have the 16-80 mm lens. You’re video is an inspiration to do the same experiment. We lived in London for 2 years and I found it paradise for street photography. At the moment I live in a more or less rural area in Holland and actually I am very curious about the results here.

Hi Joe! Ive started few months ago using jpgs only and works awesome for quick insta posts and especially when I had guests visiting so sending them quickly 150+ photos from all the trips just before they left was so handy. I shoot in CC also but prefer Raw+jpgs in small/normal as they are all about 2mb size and more then enough good quality for anything. There is very minor difference between fine and normal and no way you can see a difference unless you are a pixel peeper 400+%...fine jpgs take too much space also. Just my 2 cents.

I'm getting closer and closer to pulling the trigger and selling the last of my Canon lenses (I'm on Sony right now) and use the funds to get an X100V for day to day lightweight carry. If you're hesitating because of the cost, just go with an x100t instead! They can be had for ridiculously cheap, still a fantastic camera, 16MP is more than enough for non-critical work, and some people even insist that newer Fuji sensors can't capture the same magic that the older 16MP ones did. I won't comment on that last bit, but what I can say is that I still shoot on an XT10 (same sensor) for my pro work and the images that come out of it are just....just check them out on my instagram @yashwinning I've used an XT3 for another pro shoot and I struggled to create the same results I managed to on my XT10

I tried that 1GB card idea a couple years ago, it worked, but these cards were slow and got corrupted pretty easily. One alternative would be to take nGB file, maybe zip it so the camera does not recognize the file format, and place it on the SD in non-DCIM folder. You may need to make a few copies of it just to get down to enough space for 24/36 photos. From what I’ve seen XT-4 JPGs are about 17MB large, so you’d need ~620MB left on the card for a “36 exp roll of film”… maybe round it up to 650MB to squeeze one/two more frames on the roll :)
@alanschlesinger6843
@alanschlesinger6843 3 года назад
I too have recognized that, in certain lighting conditions, the EVF on the X-T4 has a blue tint (not seen on the LCD or the images downloaded from the SD card). My local Fujifilm rep says this is a known phenomenon related to the higher resolution of the EVF on the X-T4. Maybe there will be a fix. As stated above, I only see this occasionally and in certain conditions (typically overcast days).

Have you ever thought about making a video of the Acros film simulation? I use it a lot, especially on bright sunny days, because things look very nice with contrast in black and white and you don't have to wait until it's golden hour. Also it takes away the aspect of color, so that you think in another way about photography.

Just a couple of thoughts: With Fujifilm cameras, FINE is the highest quality for jpgs. (NOT Normal). You maybe don't know this, but you most certainly can adjust a jpg file in post! Yes, it's true that starting with a RAW file, there is more data available than a jpg file, and thus a higher degree of adjustment possible than a jpg file. That fact however does not make adjustments to a jpg file impossible. I do the later all the time. Hope this explanation clears things up for you.

I edit all my photos in-camera. I shoot RAW only, edit the keepers and zap them over to my phone. Being able to create your own recipe and shoot jpeg-only sounds good but in practice it's back to front. Ideally you would want a list of recipes you can apply to RAW photos AFTER you have taken them. This would be such an improvement to the in-camera editing process and must be super easy for Fujifilm to implement.

Interesting and worth-while experiment; thanks Joe. However, I rely on the creative process in post; for me the photography is but a start - vital and critical but a start, nevertheless. Then again, I think for a scape photographer - especially a street photographer - the weighting may be more favourable. Cheers.

Yeah I feel ya! I do enjoy what can be done with editing, but I also recognised that recently it had just become more friction in the way of completing videos. In essence, by removing the road block it allowed things to flow much more fluidly! I’d recommend giving it a go, even if you do raw+jpeg and just see how different they may look. I’ll continue it on for the next few weeks at least and see how I get on with it.

But you’re actually using a 24-120 (105) equivalent lens cause the xt4 has a cropped sensor. Still, great colours out of the Fuji! 👌🏻

Love the Fuji viewfinder and screen but man do I wish they were more accurate.
@joeallam
@joeallam 3 года назад
This was the first time I actually clocked what has been bothering me for a while about the X-T4. I've since adjusted the EVF colour shift to add more red and it's made a massive difference in keeping them accurate to each other and the eventual photo. I think I'll still take it to Fuji and see if it's actually something wrong with it, or just poor quality control.

@@ramoftherose Yeah it's a shame. At the very least, it's good that we have the control/settings to make the changes. Probably because they know they're inaccurate 🙄

Yes, set the drive mode to Continuous and for example 3FPS, so you can still shoot single images at a time, but this takes the processing to the background so it won't interfere with you taking shots and having to wait.

@@jonjones7705 yeah, even reducing the blues in the evf color setting, still looks cooler than the real image. It's my first mirrorless camera so i guess it's a matter of getting used to it. Aside from that it's a great camera :)

Wrong, Image quality FINE uses less compression and has the highest quality. ... Because of this low compression, the image quality is higher, has less noise, and is good for larger prints.
