Taking my Lancia Zagato back to where I first saw it 50 years ago & driving it on my favourite roads

It's fifty years since I first spotted this Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato outside my parents house and that moment changed my perception of cars forever, making me the petrolhead I am today.
In this video I take my now fully restored Zagato back to the spot I first saw it in Birkenhead all those years ago and then drive it to my favourite road, to see how it feels when ragged now it's fully run in.

Simply wonderful. The cracking of Harry’s voice as he sees the Lancia where it was parked 50 years ago. The smile on his face as Harry ragged his favourite roads in his teenage dream car. Life affirming stuff for a Sunday, or in fact any, evening. Perfection!

What a fabulous nostalgic episode for Harry and unexpectedly for me too. I am 53 and can personally relate to so much of this video. My dad was born in Liverpool, my parents moved to North Wales when I was 5 where I grew up, initially in Gwernymynydd (very close to Moel Fammau) and from 10 yrs old on the edge of the Denbigh moors in a village called Nantglyn. My dad was (still is) a Classic car nut so I grew up with various rebuilds, MG TA, MG TF, Rover 100, TR5, TR4A, lotus Elite, Allard L Type etc etc. My dad bought a cottage, a converted mill in Frongoch on the outskirts of Bala when I was about 18 and had many journeys via Cerrig, passed the Brenig to St Asaph Fast forward to 2023 and now I live in Chester and regularly charge into North Wales on my Kawasaki Z1000SX and enjoy the roads Harry and I enjoyed as much younger men. Thanks Harry.

I had a similar feeling coming home from school one day, walking around the corner and seeing a mk1 vw scirocco in metallic blue, only to find out my parents had just bought it. I agree, this is Harry's Garage at its best. Heart warming stuff connecting childhood dreams, aspirations and experiences with the automotive passion they kindled. I love your videos but this has to best one of the best because of the personal history. I love the fact your dad had a Dyane 6 which was quite an outré choice of car at the time. We lived in a dead end near Edinburgh with stables at the end of the road. Some nice cars passed. There was a lady with a Fulvio Zagato painted in pink! Still looked fabulous. It is interesting how our youth informs what we like in adulthood. I love the Porsche 356, my first memory being one parked near where we lived in Cambridge Massachusetts. Camping trips to France made me fall in love with French cars, particularly Citroën and Panhard. My first car at age 18 was a DS21.

The nostalgier started in the first minutes for me as my first car was a Heinkel bubble car. A claimed top speed of 54mph but that was only achievable downhill with a following wind. Going uphill usually created long tailbacks behind, but great to see your parents had one. Loved the way the smile never left Harry's face on the drive in Wales, what an excellent video which just left a feeling of contentment. More please Harry

As a teenager, I so, so nearly persuaded my mum to buy a new Zagato off the showroom floor at Tony Brooks Lancia garage, just outside the perimeter of Brooklands race circuit near Weybridge. In the end she bought a new "Export Mini" after the silver tongued Austin sales man told her that the export models were so important to the UK economy that they were built on a separate line from the regular mini at Longbridge to make sure they were 100% perfect!! Both the Fulvia and the Zagato are beautiful cars and definitely the ones that got away for me because I love the brand. Thanks for the memories Harry!

Same exact thing happened to me with a 1979 Porsche 928 - saw it on my street coming home from high school and thought about it everyday for 4 years until I was able to buy virtually the same exact car. A huge thank-you to this brilliant exposure of Harry's rememberings and emotions. It has reminded me how I fell in love with cars at the age of 8 (so 1967): calmly walking the short way from home to school, I was picked up by a friend of my father's in his Giulia 1300 berlina, and for a bit less than 200 m, I was fascinated by the engine sound, the beautifully low seating position, the gauges in the dashboard and the racing stance of the gear lever, low in the middle of the tunnel instead of hanging from the steering column. I suspect nobody would do what Harry has done and paid for the restoration of a Fulvia 1600 Zagato, hadn't it been such an emotional car for him. Thanks again for having shared the process with us the viewers.

My uncle bought a new 1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 when I was 13 and I was hooked the instant I saw it. Getting a high speed ride in it on the German autobahn that day was mind blowing. I have owned 8 Alfa’s so far, and even with the troubles some of them gave me, I still love them. To be accurate, my obsession with cars began when I was 9 and saw a Lamborghini Miura SV parked in the neighbors driveway. The owner gave me rides often because I was so crazy about the car, and it’s still something I recall vividly. The sound of that 12 cylinder never leaves you.

Over fifty years ago, the road into Ruthin was my favourite too Harry. You see, I was 4 or 5 years of age and I travelled along that road in my Dad's wagon - from Lancashire, to collect railway sleepers. The wagon was a much-travelled 1959 AEC, which had been stretched, an axle added, but most importantly - no engine modifications - making it slower than a three-legged tortoise. It just gave me even more time to look out of the windows at all that glorious countryside around me. Thank you for the trip along a shared memory lane.

I guess many will have memories similar Harry and trips with his father, one of mine relate to another Lancia, an Aurelia my dad drove back from Italy in 65, and A40 between High Wycombe and Ruislip, a journey we did many times when I was growing up. I have vivid memories of a traffic light Grand Prix starting at beaconsfield, we were up against a Mk1 Spitfire (all of 60hp…) up the then dual carriageway to to the Ickenham turn off, we were neck and neck before we had to turn off, epically exciting to a car mad 9 year old, like the Zagato we were probably doing 50 but it felt like 150…..This or the XJ, it’s draw for me. Very nice video and proof that the story makes the car! I’m a modified Fulvia owner myself and it strikes me that this car is so noisy. It will not take long before you get tired of it. I think it deserves a proper airbox. Not easy with the DCOE conversion but doable and with a remote intake somewhere behind the Rh headlight it will make it a lot quieter and hence more enjoyable. Love it that your car life started with a Lancia. You need more of them!

Your Lancia, and your attitude toward it, pretty much epitomizes Jay Leno's notion of "not going fast, but moving swiftly." (Certainly looked like you were having a swift old time!) I agree about reworking the exhaust...better performance and a calmer exhaust note should serve you well. Bravo for this!

What a happy trip down memory lane. I think I’m mid way between father and son, partly urging the beloved Yeti to increased average mpg and then, when the sun comes out, it’s out with the B and a drive - just for the joy of it. It’s noisy and not half as fast as it feels but it brings a smile to my face. Happy days. Thanks for sharing those memories.

That was awesome!! What a sound from that beautiful engine, in an equally stunning and very rare car!! You are a very lucky man Harry, but very well deserved too. I've watched the story of this and too see the smile on your face... You clearly know its been worth the journey!!!

Thats really quite something to be able to recreate the scene from 50 years ago using the same car that you have managed to track down, restore and return to life after that complete rebuild. Amazing how it has survived to allow this to happen given the issues that were revealed by the guys at Day & Whites. Meant to be Harry. Thanks for sharing.

I was also 14 years old in 1973, living in Ruthin, often up Moel Famau and around local roads. Pure nostalgia! 😊

Fantastic film Harry. Lovely car and great roads. It just shows you don’t need a hyper car to have fun! I have driven some of the roads around there and will revisit soon when my classic comes out of storage. Thanks 🙏

Such a wonderful and personal video, Harry! I loved every minute of it, sharing how you got into mopeds, bikes and cars. Giving us all the stories of your youth, your family and the day you saw HER! This amazing Lancia Fulvia Zagato. Incredible that this is the one! Full cred to Mrs M for camera work!

Great stuff Harry, well done "living the dream" 50 years on..What a car, agree with your exhaust theories too.I messed with mine and found that with the rear expansion box re-fitted the sound was much more sophisticated and liveable with on a "normal" drive. Which means the V4 "rumble" and induction noise are more readily heard too.Big smiles indeed!!

Well, there's the second favourite in your garage for me, Harry. I loved it back when you showcased the wee beast before she went in for the minor rust repair, as there was something about the shape and definitely something both magical and intoxicating in her voice. The big cat had been showcased around the same time and I was in love with that too. Since then, the big green coupe has shown her teeth and both growled and howled for the camera and I was more in love with it than ever.....and now the little orange rocket has reminded me what fun a small Italian coupe can be and how much of it you can have under the speed limit and yet because of the aural satisfaction, the feeling is that we've pushed limits and really had a whale of a time. If you said to me "Lance, pick one", I couldn't. They both do the same thing for me but from different angles and in a slightly different way.....although I don't believe the Zagato can do "laid back and cruising" as well as the Daimler.....but when cruising, the Daimler can't give you the impression that you can breathe on the gas pedal and be off and howling in a split second like the Zagato can. I am very grateful to you for showing us where you first saw the wee beasty and that we could be along for the ride as you fulfilled a lifelong dream of blasting along one of your favourite roads in the little Lancia Fulvia 1600 Sport Zagato that you'd seen all those years ago. Truly an epic little journey on a lovely road on a beautiful day in a vehicle that was well worth what it took from everyone to put her back the way she was meant to be. Many thanks, Harry and all the best, mate.
