In this video I take my 2009 BMW 328i xDrive with the N52 to a dyno!
The performance mods on my N52 are a 3-Stage Intake manifold swap with an Active Autowerke tune and an aFe sealed intake.

@@fasteat1 Also it's an AWD/AT, so there's probably another ~15whp being lost in the drivetrain compared to a RWD/6MT. Those rare 240+ WHP N52 dyno pulls are always on RWD/6MT cars, usually with MILVS, and on "friendly" dynojets in great weather conditions.

I have a lot of experience modifying the N52 engine for more power. A few thoughts, auto cars usually want more tq and power lower in the powerband compared to manual cars which will Rev higher and can have power further up in the powerband. You don't want backpressure in the exhaust. Your muffler delete will make no difference as you still have 4 catalytic converters in place. CA and legality and yearly inspections. That's also a tough one.

328 is a really nice, low maintenance daily, that makes adequate power. If you want to go fast buy a second car... put miles on the 328 there's plenty of them for a decent price. Finding a really clean well maintained n54 car is harder to do therefore you don't want to load up the miles on it,. With that said I love my 335 lol The torque is intoxicating.

Facts I got a widebody 328i stock well the exhaust not really but pretty much stock in the performance! saving up for a 335i next or 330ci depending what I wanna do with the builds cause I don’t mind a turbo six speed 330ci pushing 15psi since that’s plenty to even gap v8’s but that ecu work bouta be rough so we’ll see

I wanted the better reliability of an N52, something more capable than an N52 and something built better (OEM) than a 3 series so I went with my 2014 535i M-Sport and I love her, been on 3 road trips, one being from NC to ME and back. Its quick when I need it to be and is comfortable enough to commute to work every day. Getting ready to install a BMS Intake, a VRSF charge pipe and do a stage 1 tune on it to get more out of it. Love my Bimmer and I may be slightly crazy to be beating on it like I am, but I drive cars, I don't sit on em lol

Yeah man thats awesome, I believe the 535i has the N55 engine? I have a 2014 335i M-sport with N55 and its been just as reliable as my N52 that shown in the video. And its FBO. on E85 and so its pretty fast fast and reliable

Interesting that's all that went to the wheel. Got to think at the crank you're running about 235(ish) and you lost 46hp (20%) through the drivetrain. Mmm... something just seems off to me, I may be completely wrong, but I never seen that much % loss in my days of tuning Japanese imports. Guessing the AWD is the culprit? Love the videos tho, you've inspired me to upgrade my recently inherited e90.

In the us model it has a restrictor in it so it wont pass 185 without disabling it.

AWD systems usually lose 25% in manual form to the wheels and typically more in automatic form. My tuned 04 Subaru STI was around a 400hp crank car when tuned with mods, but it made around 300 wheel HP with the AWD system loss. Not a huge surprise to make low numbers on an AWD all motor car.

Do you’re missing, Coil pack upgrade. There’s a IAT sensor relocate upgrade that goes well with the intake system. And a Pedal tuner from BMS

That car is sick appearance wise but damn power wise, I could never buy one, that’s why I did hella research before buying a bmw, n I saw too many video as on 335i and what they’re capable of , now I have an e90 335i with around 460 whp, over 500 to the crank.

With the power loss of the awd, it should be close to 210-220 at the crank. And being NA is power limited with bolt ons, unless you go with cams and more aggressive tuning.

The N52 cannot be turbocharged or supercharged because of the magnesium aluminum mix. The car like clean though, so good job

I've seen turbocharged N52s before, pretty sure a lot of the parts were changed or modified but it can be done based on what I've seen. Are you referring to the first variation of the N52 when they had the magnesium valve cover? Also pretty sure I've seen a supercharger kit for the N52 also. Feel free to explain if I got this all wrong. But Thanks!

You can boost the n52, you just gotta keep it around the 300 to 400hp range so that your all good for the engine and the drivetrain. Those pushing the n52 to over 500hp don't last. Unless you have a built engine to be stronger then you will be ok at the power level I mentioned

There’s an issue going on here. Either their dyno reads very low or the tune is not good.. also could be that the valves on the manifold aren’t working but I haven’t looked through other videos yet to see if you put new ones in. A custom tuned N52 with just 3 stage will do conservatively 265hp at the crank. While this car is xdrive and automatic, there’s simply no way you would have a 32% drivetrain power loss from the engine making 265hp to the wheels reading 180whp.. The N52 is a great platform to mod and has good room to make power being NA, however I’m unsure how the AA tune or dyno are holding up in this example. Plenty of people with the same setup online making more power than this car did.

Definitely, I believe Stage FP and Kassel make a way better tune for the N52/N51 engine compared to AA. This is based on many examples on the forums and Bob at Stage FP is a legend.

Well they were having issues with their dyno reading before I did the session so that could definitely be a possible that the dyno wasn't that accurate. From what I was seeing an N52 with xdrive should be at around 215awhp with the same mods I have. I would need to take it again to see if the numbers are consistent and then I can assume something is off with the tune or the valves. When I got the manifold I did replace the valves with new ones.

Honestly you got rid of the muffler so you do lose back pressure. I plan on leaving mine, I did the 3 stage intake manifold upgrade, a silicone intake boot and tuned my 328 with the bimmerlabs tune so I should be at 260 hp. May wanna dyno it but I doubt my car would be making low numbers.

My 325i e92 2006 has 218hp STOCK (N52B25AF). Are there still some downgrades on American Market? I don't understand how you only got 180hp with mods with the 328i.

I have an 09 328i 6spd manual rwd with the sport package and its quick and I love it. Less things to go wrong with it than a 335 and very fun to drive. Makes my 08 IS250 boring but I got a soft spot for that car too. Every girl I take out in the cars love the Lexus for the looks and BMW for the quality,comfort, and the cupholders in the dash.lol

Yeah I think the whole point of this video is that basically nothing gives big power bumps on this engine if staying NA. I'd be surprised if he got more than 10whp out of headers.

I don't see a lot of people doing anything with an e60 530i, but that's my daily and I know I wont get a lot out of it but if I could N/A I want to try to squeeze 239 to the wheels out of it. right now just calculating stock number it should be around 209 to the rear wheel.

@@JeckDRippa just like how power is tested on a dyno, thats wheel horsepower. The 255 that you see online is how much the crank puts out but you loose power through your transmission and all the different gears and gear ratios cars have. So the power your purting to the ground (the wheels) differes from what the engine truly makes.

Thats crank horsepower, thats how much power the engine itself can produce, but because of the gears, and distance the power has to travel to be put to the ground, you loose some of that power, for example my car, 255 crank horsepower, rwd, 6 speed automatic, open differential, its putting about 210 horsepower to the rear wheel

I'm actually thinking of trying it out to see if it really does make a difference. From what I've heard, even though it would be sending all the power to the rear wheels, the front drivetrain would still be moving so it would still have some resistance and plus it would still have the heavier weight of the of all the xdrive components so I'm unsure it actually would make the car that much faster.

@@InlineSixAuto it makes a difference in my opinion my car feels more aggressive. You can feel the power push. I have a 330 with a tune. My transfer case even went out and I’ve been driving it no problems. Awd it doesn’t even move until I fix the awd. I recommend 🙌🏾

@@sekouchill 325xi, just recently did xDelete, can definitely feel a difference. there's still SOME drivetrain loss but nothing close to stock. plus, an RWD e90 is still like 3,200 lbs, not too far off from the AWDs. definitely made driving around in all this rain lately a lot more fun lol

My 525i e60 after the 3im, bimmerlabs tune, silicone intake boot/cai my intake diameter is 3.5 until the throttle body it's 3.25, primary cats still on rest straight pipe. X pipe to y pipe to single chamber muffler. Haven't dyno'd it but from 215hp it Mos Def around 250-270hp tops. Be taking gs,zs,chargers out.

I have the mppk power kit ecu flash and rwd and im very happy with my car but it is a 2011 lci and i was told that was the first year that bmw flash the ecu that is what i was told not sure about that my is totally stock just a k &n. Air filter truly think you can get more out your car..with better temps..

The dyno has to be off! With those mods you should be making around 210whp+. My cousin has a 328i with only a silicone intake boot and a JB4 power box tune and he made 201whp on dyno. I have just about the same mods as you currently but I haven’t been on a dyno yet

Yeah that's around where I thought the numbers would be at. The dyno could have been off because they were actually having trouble getting accurate numbers before I did my session. The first person was getting like a 2000hp reading and then when they supposedly fixed it he said the numbers seemed lower than expected. I'd have to take it again to see if the numbers are consistent.

Looks like you maybe figured out one of the basic principles of modifying a motor for more power, which is everything is part of a system, and has to be treated as such when doing mods. Look at it like this, if you have three 4-foot long sections of pipe to build a pipeline, but while they are all the same length, one piece of pipe is 2" in diameter, one is 3" in diameter, and one is 5" in diameter. No matter what order you put them together in, the pipeline will only flow as much as the 2" diameter pipe can handle with the pressure pushing the air or liquid remaining constant. What you have done so far is build this imaginary pipeline and you put the 5" inch piece of pipe in the middle and the smaller diameter stuff on each end. If you want more horsepower you need to replace the 2" and 3" inch diameter pieces with 5" inch diameter piping that matches the middle to eliminate restrictions, and make it as short and straight as possible to maximize efficiency. Even then, you might not be seeing the full power the new intake and exhaust are capable of making if the engine is now having to artificially restrict the air it allows into the throttle body. This is because it cant get enough fuel for the proper mixture of air to fuel and will run lean if it doesn't cut off some of the air coming in. Now you have to turn attention to the fuel pump(s), injectors, and possibly the fuel lines and fuel rail. Even after you remedy this problem, sooner or later you will run into the problem of running out of displacement and/or RPM speed (sooner rather than later in this particular case). Once you have gotten to the point where the amount of air and fuel available to the engine is as much as it can take being naturally aspirated, and the engine is spinning as fast as it can without coming apart, the only way to generate more power is to increase displacement and/or compression, increase the maximum RPM's it can handle, or physically force more air and fuel into the combustion chambers with a supercharger or turbo system. It's definitely going down a rabbit hole that is expensive, but it sure is a lot of fun IMO.

Oh, I mentioned this but didn't talk about it much. One of biggest restrictors of making power in a motor is heat. The heat generated by the combustion of air and fuel negatively affects almost every single system of an internal combustion engine. You want to get rid of as much of that heat as possible while providing the engine the coldest air possible. Every degree of heat that can be expelled or eliminated increases the engine's capacity for making horsepower. Feeding the motor the coolest air available and not letting it suck in the hot air under the hood in the engine bay can make a big difference.

Me neither. I went back to do a second dyno and it was even lower at 179whp 😂. I feel like at this point it’s the dyno cause there’s no way it’s that low. And it doesn’t feel that slow lol.

@@InlineSixAuto But to be honest with you, the best way to get power out of these engines is to allow them to breath. Cat-less exhaust is the way to go (then tune). Unfortunately you probably can't remove cats where you stay

it makes 230 at the crank stock. stock it be making around 190-200 wheel. also mine is xdrive so there is additional power loss at the wheel. But still yes, these number are still lower than they should be

Yeah man idk. It doesn't feel like it has that little of power. I'm probably going to take it again to confirm because they were having issues with the dyno before I did my run

yep. You should feel bigger gains if you do the 3 stage manifold with the tune. The tune by itself doesn't do much

@@juniorsolis8357 No problem. You can always contact Active Autowerke directly to confirm that the tune will work with your variation of the N52. But I'm pretty sure it will.

If you are in the US your 325i is 3.0L N52, get the three stage intake manifold and you can flash the free bimmerlabs stock 330i tune to activate and use the DISAs in the manifold, if you want more performance go to Stage FP/Kassel for a tune and consider headers/MILVs/Dinan Ram Intake mod, etc. Forums and RU-vid are super helpful

CHECK MY CHANNEL IF YOU WANT N52 CONTENT ALSO!!! My 330i made 242 on and awd dyno, mine is rwd also with 215,000 miles but idk why yours was so low my guy. Don’t be upset it could also be the dyno as well, I ran mine in December in an enclosed cool environment so your car probably heat soaked and wasn’t making any power. The true duals don’t add power also and back pressure doesn’t have much to do with however running the dual into a straight before or around trans is where you can get most of the power

Hey i had the same thing with mine its because the usa version has a restrictor in it. If you take out plastics at top of engine bay there is a fuse box hidden with a few relays there is a ten amp fuse that if you just pull it shuts down your restrictor. Otherwise nomatter what you add you will get restricted to 185hp.

Ok, that is a surprise. Stock my 125i (euro spec) has 215hp. Same engine block as the 130i and Z4 which both pump out about 265 - 269 hp standard. With a tune on my ecu I can bump my 215hp stock to about 270 without any other upgrades. Euro spec does have the 3 stage intake manifold as standard though. Plus my full exhaust is upgraded from headers to back box. Once tuned I expect to reach into the 290hp range.

@@Ares4R a custom one. I am not pushing 290hp at the moment. Had a bad mass airflow sensor when I got the tune and was on the dyno last. It got stuck at 255hp crank. But replaced the mass airflow sensor after and will go on a dyno again in about two months from now.

I'm looking at the 2010 through 2012 e91 wagon which is the n52. Will be a cool car to mod some and daily. I prefer the port injection and normally aspirated inline 6. They have their benefits and sound.

Try another Dyno to compare the results but you might be right that you lose power to the 4x4 😂 and the weather.

I got a 328i e93 for the reliability. The 335i is fun and all but its one of the worst bmws in terms of reliability. The high pressure fuel pump and injectors along with the infamous waste gate rattle on those cars is enough to make anybodys wallet cry. Turbos aint cheap. And on that note, what tune should i use for my N51. Send a link?

Yeah man though the N54 is one of the most tunable engines, it sounds like a nightmare to maintain. Especially if you’re new to maintaining cars. For that reason I’m glad I got the N52 as introduction to owning a BMW lol. I would like to own one now that I know more though. I have a e90 335i with over 140k miles making around 460 wheel, omg car is so much fun and maintenance ain’t that bad, maybe stay ahead, a lot of people don’t change certain parts until they break n doing that, if you wait for a part to break it could damage another part also, that’s where the expense comes in

I definitely would like to own an N54 to see its potential myself at some point. From what I've seen they are insane. I have a 335i with the N55 now with about 400whp but its clearly less in power potential compared to the N54

Uhh no. I bought a 328i xdrive because I wanted a reliable NA inline 6, a fairly light awd sedan, and something that looked good between $15-25k. I had a MK7 GTI before and yes it’s way more tuneable but was definitely less reliable. I had no issues with it as I totaled it with 25k miles on it ): Got 26k from insurance and got the bimmer for $17k after tax/fees. 35k miles on it (during the crazy used car market). It wasn’t great for harsh NE Wisconsin winters. The 328i seemed like the smartest choice. I’m not trying to go fast anymore as I have other priorities financially. I can just get coilovers, wheels and exhaust along with other cosmetic mods and be happy. A 335i would be dope but I don’t want to rely on something so unreliable for getting to work or the ski resort. My complaints are the shitty infotainment that feels more than 12 years outdated and the fact that my back seats don’t fold down. I wish I had the snow package.

I have dyno'd my 2010 328XI and the readings with 19" BMW stock wheels from another model BMW where 248HP but your readings are way off. I have no engine or tuning mods installed. BMW normally understate there horsepower readings so I truly believe apart from your rims, you are having some engine losses.

I was wondering if you ever thought of installing "Eisenmann Sport Exhaust with Quad 70mm Tips - E90/E91 325i/328i/xi"? Technically this should not give the engine any back pressure as it is an improvement on the existing 328ix single exit exhaust to a quad design. At the same time it retains the integrity of the muffler without having to delete it. Please let me know your thoughts!

I had considered it in the past but too me it’s just seems to expensive when you can just get a muffler delete and or resonator delete for like 20-30% of the price and pretty much achieve the same sound or better. The only benefit of the actually exhaust is no drone I’m assuming. And the quad setup would look pretty clean also. Maybe in the future if I have the extra money I’ll try it out.

There is 1 more upgrade you need, and that is the wheels, trust me. Light weight forge form wheels. Stocks can average 22+lbs. when you find this (1”=1lb) you’ll get that feels you thought you lost. I didn’t share much with the names of the suppliers. But you’ll find it without a doubt! I have a 2011 328xi n51. They are Ultimate Driving vehicles.. you just keep on peeling off the limp layers

Yeah man I’m at 117k miles on my N52 and have had it for 3 years and haven’t had a single major issue. Just had to replace some of those dang gaskets causing oil leaks

However, if they do start leaking again I'll definitely do a video. I actually have a video for the valvetronic motor gasket and the eccentric shaft sensor seal though.

N51 & N52 gang thebest engine for daily drive . I have N51b30 and added : -3 stage manifold n52b30 from 3.0Si (E92 EU cupe 272 hp) - waiting for sport exhaust manifolds - looking for good rear muffler . Also i check my car on dyno shows 234.5 hp and 278 Nm .

I was wondering if you actually felt a difference in the upgrade because I wanted to do this mods on my xdrive 328i but I heard that you can lose horsepower because the all wheel drive has different gear ratios
