Great video... I have an E92 XI and i change the oil every 7k and add Liqui Moly Ceratek. I would add cleaning the MAF as well as it creates tons of idle problems if you have a vehicle with lots of miles on it and also the Venos solenoid filters on the left side of the engine. these are important to be cleaned and there is 2 of them, easy job. Beautiful and lots of fun to drive cars but make sure you have some money on the side for breakdowns. As when they age, one thing breaks after the other and it aint cheap.

15+k intervals on these types of high performance engines is absolutely insane imo. Following that routine is just asking for long term engine problems. I do mine 2x a year before and after winter. I Also buy engine oil only when it’s half price as there’s always a sale on it.

@buildanddrive

@Boozi88
@Boozi88 Год назад
It's actually in the BMW manual and the textbooks of service technician courses for a very specific reason. We're dealing with engineers here, not RU-vid recommendations. When they design and stress-test these engines, the clearances, timing etc. are set for a motor with used oil, not fresh, thin and clean oil. Oxidization and contamination of the motor oil are inevitable, and it is accounted for in the design of these engines, beyond the shadow of a doubt. For the average daily driver, follow the recommendations in the manual, let's not try to reinvent the wheel. And yes, that even includes you, the guy that does a highway pull one a week and classifies himself as a street racer.
@buildanddrive
@buildanddrive Год назад
BMW Factory recommended oil change interval is 15,000 miles which the previous owner followed and is probably why the engine had worn prematurely at only 100,000 kilometers.
@5G4R
@5G4R Год назад
@@Boozi88 lol try again little buddy 15k intervals are purely for marketing "lowest cost of maintenance and low emissions" bs has nothing to do with engineering Your whole statement along with that little assumption that you know how I drive make you look completely ignorant and clueless But you do you 😆

Interesting video.. I have an ‘06 E63 630i and have had to replace the PCV/CCV and all the pipes due heavy smoke on full acceleration. This was due to basically constant short journeys of no more than 2 miles everyday.. I knew it wasn’t good for the engine but basically thought it would be ok.. Nope! 🙄 Sorted now, along with a service & new spark plugs
@buildanddrive
@buildanddrive 2 года назад
Yes the CCV system needs time to heat up otherwise it doesn't work correctly. With short trips the oil residue gets gummed up and clogged.

Great informative video. I am looking for a car for my daughter, and of course, safety is my #1 priority for her. Was contemplating going with a Camry that is easier & cheaper to work on, or a BMW that is more expensive to work on but a much safer vehicle. So I've been looking into BMW's, my older son has a 440i, but his is new & under full warrantee. I am pretty well mechanically inclined, yet intimidated since I've never worked on BMW's. Hey, I have an E92 320i 6 speed manual, you said you used 75w-80 and it wasn’t running great, what brand was it and do you know any other alternatives than bmw LT-3, I’m learning to service my car but I’m still a bit unsure what manual transmission oil to get as the forums are quite confusing, thanks

I had the same lifter ticking with Castrol 5w30 in my N52B30 when it was cold. Even when hot I could hear more valvetrain noise than usual. One week later I changed to Fuchs 5w30 Titan GT1 Pro C-3 which works really well and all ticking noises went away after 2 heat cycles.

Possible, when I used Castrol oils (they were not full synthetic) my engine ticked LOUD! But I changed to a 5w40 full synthetic and it helped.

Find a good 5w30 or 5w40 engine oil with LL01 or LL04 certification. Gearbox oil you need to look at the small sticker on the bottom side of the transmission, it will say MTF-3 or similar if it's manual. Is your auto or manual? Steering fluid should be pentosin CHF-11.

At least change the oil. If it doesn't have any maintenance history and you plan on keeping the car a while then go for it. You don't need to swap coils until they go bad. Save your $ and buy just one coil and put it in your trunk until one of them goes bad.

First of all, I love the video and the very detailed break down, thank you very much. One thing you mentioned which I'm not sure is correct, the power steering fluid, all the forums show the dipstick location on the left where it says ATF? ATF only etc on the lid? But you are filling it up in a different location (not a big deal as different motor) but also everyone says Dextron III ATF for the power steering fluid on all the BMW forums? I have a 2008 BMW E91 320 for reference
@buildanddrive
@buildanddrive 4 месяца назад
You are correct, thanks for pointing that out. On the 320i the resevoir is on the passenger side of the engine at the very front. And it does say ATF ONLY on the cap. So I guess for that model, use that fluid. My PS pump has always been noisy, I wonder if some ATF would quiet it down.

I would drain it all out and maybe flush it with some water... then fill it up again with the BMW antifreeze... you need a 50/50- mix of antifreeze and distilled water. I think it can damage the water pump and internal parts of the engine block because the chemicals have a different reaction... the block is an magnesium alloy. Unless you are using 100% synthetic oil (which I would recommend, this is NOT Full Synthetic oil which is 10%-40% synthetic oil, mixed with standard oil. Mobile 1 uses 40% synthetic in their oils. Yes every Full Synthetic is a blend) changing your oil every 3000-5000 miles would be best. You can never change your oil too much. You should pick a quality oil, and stay with that brand for best results. Not all engine oils work well together. Adding a quality additive like Slick 50 during the winter and summer months will provide protection against dry starts, and increase your gas mileage by 2-3 MPG. As one who has worked in the auto parts industry (Autozone) I would not recommend 0-40 oil, use 5-40. Higher viscosity gives you better compression and better ability for the oil to get to the needed parts in your engine. Any teflon type products are excellent for your vehicle. Slick 50 is one of the FEW maintenance applications you can do that will actually pay for itself by the increased MPG. (no affiliation with Slick 50, just a product I have used and trusted for 20 years.) It will help provide much better lubrication for your motor and VANOS system. Another excellent teflon product is Trico Ice Winter wiper blades with infused teflon in the rubber. They will not squeak, and last a long time. Yes you can use a Winter blade year round (and selling summer type and winter type blades is just a way to get you to spend extra $$). It is high quality blade and not very expensive on Rockauto. Remember, teflon products are self lubricating, which is why they work so well with your car. You will see a definite improvement and your engine will love you using the Slick 50. It's a good product at a reasonable price. And does pay for itself. I cannot recommend using an engine flush, as they can ruin important gaskets. Use only oil to flush your engine. If you feel the need to do a flush, add your oil and change it after 200-300 miles. Or change the oil pan gasket and make sure to clean thoroughly the oil pan before installing. Brake cleaner can be used to help clean the oil pan. Lastly a low temp thermostat is a good addition. Check Irish Racing for reasonable price low temp thermostats (they make only BMW after market parts). NASCAR utilizes 160 degree F thermostats, and if it is good enough for NASCAR it probably is good for your car as well. take care.
@buildanddrive
@buildanddrive Год назад
Thanks for the comment Johan, I've heard of slick 50 but we can't get it here in Germany. I agree engine flushes on old engines can ruin alot of gaskets and make things worse. The oil pan on an n52 is an impossible job. I don't recommend anyone trying to do that in their driveway. I had my engine out when I did mine. Have a good one! 💪🏽
@-NOGOODRACING-
@-NOGOODRACING- 3 года назад
I either change the oil at 6000km or 6 month or just fill up the oil after hard driving and change the filter at maximum 8000km, cuz my N52 burns oil. Never trusted the so called “16000km” oil change interval. Our Driving environment is not the “perfect scenario” in a lab.
@buildanddrive
@buildanddrive 3 года назад
Yes, I totally agree. You should change it more often especially if it's burning more. After 2500kms on new oil, mine was black! I think all the combustion gases getting by the piston rings wears the oil out a lot sooner
@-NOGOODRACING-
@-NOGOODRACING- 3 года назад
@@buildanddrive That's right, gasoline dilute the oil and breaks down the viscosity modifiers and anti wear additives as well.
