Geotextile fabric is good to put down first before putting gravel down. Your gravel will not disappear into the dirt.
@darilekron4590
@darilekron4590 8 месяцев назад
Definitely they should do that at least in the worst areas. Also they can spread some powdered lime over low lying areas that tend to mud up more to stabilize the ground quicker and it'll help minimize softening during rain season.
@darilekron4590
@darilekron4590 8 месяцев назад
Woven geotex fabric is better for road base than the non woven ringspun type of fabric. I have done jobs where there was water coming out of hillside in path and you could drop down 12" diameter rocks and they would disappear. I covered that small "sink hole" with fabric going several feet beyond soft area and covered with crushed rock and you couldn't even tell that there was a problem area in a few days.

Popular trees are short lived fast growing trees. The life expectancy for popular trees is 40 to 50 years, and at that point the heart wood is rotting out of them. This is why 30 years popular trees are harvested for lumber.

Not only breath but a good firebreak. The way things are going I would clear enough area around a cabin to keep large trees from falling on one’s head while sleeping in the cabin. It’s a double edge sword, one needs some ground cover to prevent erosion but something that won’t dry out and become a tinder pile around one’s abode. Another wise move is to use as much fire resistant materials in the build.

Come the winter I would remove a lot more trees near the tracks/road, that would reduce the need to trim small branches. Presumably it snows there from time to time, and prevention of trees from falling is important. Additionally a tractor attachment like a flail hedgetrimmer, is very effective at quickly cutting back from one drive pass. Good to see you are digging ditches, laying culverts, that will really extend the life of the road surface.
@BlondiNativeAme3
@BlondiNativeAme3 8 месяцев назад
My parents and now me used to sell our large trees to a lumber company. They came in every 5 years and removed large trees that could fall or were way too tall and could cause damage with a bad snow or rain storm. and this gave all the saplings room to grow. I had a path cleared two years ago from my house to utility pole and... with the bad rain/wind storms we had in the northeast this year, trees have fallen into the cleared path and pulled down my internet wire (which still works).

We developed a way to install beams in a forest without drilling into the trunks by hanging timbers or small logs with cables from crotches of multiple trees, and ladders up to the platform by lashing rungs to two parallel trees. Speaking of trees, we had a tulip poplar tree in our backyard growing up. This tree was massive- as in 3 adults could extend their arms to circle it and only their fingertips would be able to touch. My dad used a river barge rope to make a rope swing and the branch never even sagged. We estimated the trees age to easily be over 100 years old and it was straight and tall and bloomed beautifully every year. One of my favorite trees 😊

Spencer, heard you just talk about black locust trees; we had black locust planted around our property in Upstate NY, house built in the 1800s. The trees acted as natural lightning rods and all the tops of the trees had been hit and burnt by lightning, but lower down the trees thrived. If you want to use a tree for fence posts, they're great. But, word of caution, if you try hitting a fence post nail into a dried out locust post, you'll only bend the nails. Basically, you have to use the fence posts whilst they've been cut down and not dried out. They're a great fence post and they'll stand firm for decades... a really hard wood when dried out - good luck.when you get around to using them

@@philtucker1224 no I mean the trees he’s already got cut down. The tall smaller logs they showed. They’re in similar size. Not sure what kind of wood it is, looks like birch to me, could be wrong. 6- 7’ little log cabin with be awesome for the little ones.

Looks great, guys! Lots of hard work, getting the site cleared, getting the road ready, but the journey to success is always wrought with obstacles. So hope you can arrange for gravel, and that the weather cooperates so it can be laid, all before you have to return home...would be great to see. Have a great week, and praying that Spencer can fix the SUV...actually, he probably doesn't need my prayers...Spence can fix anything! Be well, my favorite (and beloved) American family, and be safe! 💖🍁😉

Great job! I love working outside and clearing land. So fun to see the progress as you go. The electric chainsaws have their place, but I would get one good pro level gas chainsaw, 50cc or 60cc. This will make the work much easier. Just my two cents. Have fun and enjoy your land.

Everybody hits a rough patch. Let's hope you are done for a long while. I love that you are keeping so many fruit trees. I grew up in Texas and didn't think fruit trees grew there. I'm in Washington state now and they are like weeds.

Set your smart-phones to make calls over wifi, and you can use your phones to make calls normally while within wifi range of your Starlink dish and router. Black locust makes excellent tool handles too, usually much better than what your bought them with. So break an axe or shovel handle and just carve one out of your local flora.

TODAY IS OUR 49th Wedding anniversary 8/17/1974 and so happy to take the time with you and watch your video. It reminds us so much of our first house build on top of a mountain taking us 5 months to complete the house with a builder. Clearing the property with a hugh wood pile that lasted us many years. Thank you for your journey you will do awesome. Our children were born a few years afterwards. You are blessed and so are they and wont forget this time.

McKenzie, I’m Glad that you and the children are alright!🥰. As far as the vehicle, that can be fixed! Spencer....you’re just Amazing with the things you can fix! It’s Good that you’re learning about what kind of trees y’all have on your property!😁. Get a book on different kinds of herbs (plants) and flowers so y’all can learn what their remedies are and the teas you can make! I think prunes are plums and that’s a Natural Way of helping to go to the bathroom!😁. Have a Wonderful and Blessed week!💖

If you talk with Evan at Country View Acres they have some sort of flail mower that can go 90 degrees to trim trees back from road. It attaches to their tractor. I don’t know what it is called, but it looks cool and seemed to work for them really good.

You need to put up a ridged kiddy pool that will heat during the day to let the kids bath in it! After all the mud from them having a blast playing in it, it's better than them dragging it in the trailer!

Well, congratulations. You two are becoming true off grid folks. Make sure next time buy a spool (200+ feet) of cordage for generator . Otherwise I would suggest getting some round bales of hay and un rolling them on the muddy areas. Used this technique growing up to build roads going through forests. Mulch also works but there is potential for flattening tires. Those cut trees, anything 4 inches around or bigger in circumference make great fence posts. Any posts (stripped of bark) 8 feet or longer usually last several years. Posts 7-8 inches in circumference, ten foot long make strong posts for corners and these larger post add strength to your fence. Example, put in a larger circumference post, then put in 5 smaller circumference before adding another large post, then five more, another large post, and so on. A fence will also provide a sense of security. You guys are learning a lot. Keep it up

Big improvement ! Spencer, for bigger trees you plan to cut down, look into girdling them a several months to 1/2 year or so in spring or summer before planned cutting. It kills tree so leaves will fall and it helps dry it out so it will be lighter/easier to move and use for firewood or lumber....

Be aware of which trees you’re taking out. I’ve been told by an arborist that the smaller trees protect the larger trees that they surround, especially during a storm. I’ve experienced this first hand. The property owner of the house I was renting had previously removed a load of the smaller trees. When a storm hit, one of the remaining large, established trees came through the roof. I’ve been following you from the beginning and never miss a video. You are truly amazing. Love it!

When I see little man riding the tractor I think back when my son would ride the tractor with my dad and he would drive the tractor out here for me to come get him off because he would fall asleep in my dads arms. Usually though he would wake up screaming PAPAW!!! He took every step my dad made those spring & summers from maybe 3 till he would start school!! My dad was a preacher but decided he was through marrying people, well he did one more!! My oldest son, his little buddy 😃. Enjoy every minute it goes by so fast!! It’s awesome seeing you guys raising them to not live under a tv all day or with a iPad or iPhone even in there hands all day. Love your channel.
