I always wondered why I, a widow at the other end of raising my kids, so enjoy your videos. Your video today answered my question. You two remind me of my husband and I. Frozen pipes, broken water pumps, dry wells, a metal tank for a septic tank. Raising kids through it all. Adapting, trying not to cry because every thing broke at once. Learning as we went. It’s hard but you are doing it so well! ❤️

Retrofit a small woodstove for emergencies, it still keeps you off grid and will allow you to take care of heating and cooking for these rare situations. Cutting and burning deadfall will not negatively impact the environment. Love what you all are doing! Best wishes!

A backup heating source for long and deep cold is a great idea ... A small wood stove will prevent you from having to use your mini splits for long periods of time especially during low solar production. It's great if you have a really cold winter as well.

My parents lived in the mountains of NM and had a well and went from a wood stove to a pellet stove. Best decision ever! Pellets don't take a lot of space. The heat lasts all Night and in the morning! No more cold mornings! And easy clean up.

I was just going to suggest that! When our first winter electric bill turned out to be over$200 and we found out we had CEILING HEAT, we ended up getting a wood stove. It worked a treat, and I have it to this day. I now have a more efficient system, but it sure comes in handy when the power goes out. They make some very attractive small units now and there is a good supply of wood outside.
@LeJimster
@LeJimster 2 года назад
Only problem is I can't see where a wood stove would fit into their design as it's not a huge house. First of all they need to invest in a better backup generator. Then they need to expand their battery storage to get the full benefits of that solar array. A backup heating solution would be a great idea though.

Thats what I was thinking. Solar and batteries are all well and good but so much can go wrong even with a back up generator. Why would you not include such and effective and reliable fail-safe source of heat, especially when you live someplace that gets this cold? Also, if you weren't relying solely on the batteries for heat then they wouldn't drain as fast. Didn't make sense to me.

Do they even allow to place those in homes anymore. I know new homes in my state don't allow to have wood fireplaces in them. Only the electric and gas heaters.which are useless when you have no power. I'm not sure if you can in their area. Then again my state does have probably the strictest building codes in the world.

Coming to you from the great white north in the small town of Beiseker, Alberta. Winters here are brutal when the polar vortex hits us. If your pump house is insulated and heated, you can replace the hose bib with a frost proof one. They are usually 12" long and you set them at a small angle so the water drains out of them(the gasket is at the very back and stays inside the heated space) to prevent freezing. Until you get a conditioned space for your batteries and upgrade the batteries, build an insulated enclosure around them with a light bulb(incandescent, not LED or CFL) to keep the batteries warm. I feel for you, not being used to the extreme cold, but hopefully these suggestions will ease the pain a little bit. You're an inspiration to young people everywhere and maybe even a few of us of the older generation.

Yeah, I think looking at what Canadians in cold areas do to keep things from freezing is a great idea, and do not just do the bare minimum. Bill Kuker...in 2009 in Arky, we had a big ice storm. It sounded like a war zone as trees lost their limbs. I was without electricity for 16 days. I was incredibly happy that I heated with a wood burning stove. For fast hot water for coffee, I used my camp stove, fueled with the small canisters of propane. I did longer food cooking on the woodstove. For these reasons I think your advice is excellent. But I have to note my beginner ignorance. I am very tempted to replace my stove that is too small for my house. I would get a big one with the top that can be lifted to cook directly on the box Being rural, they should definitely get themselves this backup while I also note that wood heat is a consistent warmth. But learn to leave a nighttime fire that leaves you good fire starting embers in the morning. Good drafting needed. I have had one or two tiny embers fire up fast, at which point, I say Thank you. 😏💜😊🤗 IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE COVID, YOU SHOULD HEAD TO AN AG STORE FOR THE HIGHLY ATTACKED IVERMECTIN, WHICH IS A NOBEL PRIZE WINNING ANTI-PARASITIC, AND AN EQUALLY MIRACULOUS ANTI-VIRAL. IT SHOULD BE DOSED IMMEDIATELY WHEN SYMPTOMS FEEL EVIDENT.. AHHH. NOT COVID. BLESSINGS. I was happy to hear you two don't have Covid, but still so sorry you are both sick. You certainly have been through some rough times lately, but I have found that afterward you will be stronger. Still, I know it is no picnic while going through these trying times so I am praying you get to the other side quickly. Thanks for posting your videos. They are inspiring and helped me to have confidence to fix small things around my house. It is nothing compared to what you are doing, but a big step for me. This is my first time posting, but I have watched from the beginning. By the way, I love watching your children grow. They are both so adorable. I have 5 grandchildren and they are growing so fast. Thanks again for all your hard work filming/posting your videos, mistakes and all. Very impressive!

This is the first , but not the last, episode i have watched. But I feel it needs to be said that the level of humbleness and humility displayed by this couple is astounding. Relevant, personal, informative, Real. Kudos to you guys. Its not an easy choice to carry through with such a dramatic change in lifestyle. But what really got me was at 23:24 when she bared Both her emotions and her global awareness and gratitude. THAT is, by definition, Beauty in its truest form. I wish you all the greatest of Success, Health and Joy in this life. Much Love

listen, that entire length of hoses is supposed to wrapped and secured down with 6-8" inch thick insulation and bury what you can in the ground. that should stop the freezing process. then you can wrap HEATING TAPE around any pipe works. then wrap the insulation around that. duck tape the insulation closed.to take it to another step, wrap that in wire fencing or other to prevent rodents from tearing it up. my local housing always told me, if you wrap that exposed pipe thoroughly, you should never need heating tape. he was right.

Doing a great job!!! Having the flu is rough. Plenty of fluids, small snacks and rest. Yes, it is hard with two little ones. Raised six and now have nine grandchildren. Remember the pioneers that built log cabins, dug water wells by hand, trapped or hunted for food and also collected rain water. God bless!

You might look into a Generac system. It can start automatically when there's a power outage, runs on NG or Propane, so you would have to get a large Propane tank. It would be a good safety item instead of freezing

Those "whole house" generators are VERY EXPENSIVE ! I would suggest that they get a bigger portable generator. One that can output 5KW-7KW, continuously. The one they currently have is 4KW peak! Of course, then you would have to have at least 20+ gallons of gas on hand !

I have a 3500w dual fuel (propane & gasoline) with electric and pull start. My next one will be 7000w. I have multiple heat sources, any of which can keep a 1500 sq ft home at 70F. I live in the MidWest, where we get ice storms several times a year, hit 0F regularly, Tornadoes, etc... It's like the lack of pre-planning last year that took out their Water House last year. Now not enough power storage to match their usage, just need to sit down and make some hard decisions.

@@kevinshumaker3753 No one should depend on heat pumps as their only source of heat ! You should always have a backup source of heat ! Rinnai makes a very nice wall mounted, propane, direct vent heater/furnace. For temporary use a 100 lb propane bottle will last a long time.

Exactly. Step 1: Stop going backwards in time and use what's available to actually live a good life instead of pointlessly putting yourself through off grid stupid problems in 2022. Get Heat. Get Clean Water. If you store it, tanks should be cleanable...

For what it's worth, working at the hospital, I've seen tons of patients with 'Rona symptoms get negative test results and get denied admittance. They come back daily 2-3 times, and finally test positive and now have more severe symptoms. Finally at our hospital we just decided to treat 'Rona symptoms as having Rona-Chan. I really hope you guys have a speedy recovery.

Kenzie, you have every right to get frustrated (especially when you don't feel well) but you're lucky to have your very own problem-solver on hand. Hang in there you two. I'm confident that, even through the problems may persist, you will figure it all out and give us great content in the process.

We have a water delivery service that delivers when our cistern can't keep up. They would fill all three of your tanks in minutes. It's 100% clean potable water. You should look into it. You should also look into a wind generator. A lot of companies can test your location for feasibility. You may have the ability to make power 24/7.

Have y’all ever considered installing a small wood burning, or self feeding pellet stove for those cold winters to help supplement the mini splits? All things considered, those stoves are really efficient and with a fan can really heat a space.
@dougwintermute3070
@dougwintermute3070 2 года назад
You really should add a wood stove. They make some really good ones with catalysts in them that are very efficient and even burn most of the smoke. Also, have a water well drilled onsite. There is great quality water under most of East Texas, and if you want to be really efficient then install and old-fashioned windmill to draw the water up and into your storage tanks. Praying everyone feels better soon.

We understand your struggle and frustration. Sending happy encouraging vibes your way. We are offgrid living in our container home that we are building out. A fire stove has been our saving grace.
