I just wanted to give you some advice on the oven not working. RV ovens are notorious for not lighting. Use a BBQ lighter to try and get the pilot light going. A lot of times the oven just doesn't start because the electric igniter isn't able to get the pilot light going. And something else that I've done with my RV oven is to keep a rectangular pizza stone permanently in the oven on the lower rack. The heat from the burners is very uneven and can lead to burning parts of the food, so by adding the pizza stone between the flame and the food, it makes for a much more even heat.

Thank you for sharing this advice with them! I live in a camper trailer full time, and have had issues with my oven burning food. I hadn't thought of a pizza stone! That will be my next purchase ... I eat a lot of homemade pizza anyway, so was considering getting one for that purpose ... but I will just get it for the oven and leave it in there ... Thanks again!

Good move buying a trailer. I started out camping as a Boy Scout, then the Army, then (1970) I bought a VW Camper Van and being stationed in Germany my wife and I traveled all over Europe. I even got out of the Army and stayed in Germany for six months. Upon returning to the states (Chicago area) and sold the VW and bought a new Class B van for $5,000.00 (1973). Had that for twenty years and gave it to my younger brother and he had it for 10 more years. Next we bought a used Pop-up camper when our two girls were 2 and 4 years old. Six years later we bought a 30 foot travel trailer (bunk house type) with a queen bed in front and four bunks in the back. We had that until the girls moved out of the house. We had the same problem with our ovens in two of our four camping vehicles/trailers. We added shoe bags to hold things like grill lighters, flash lights, string/rope, etc. Same thing in the Bathroom for toiletries, wash cloths, etc. We mostly used paper plates, paper bowls, etc, and burned them in the nightly fires. We camped all over the U.S. From Niagara Falls, to Yellowstone but mostly a state park in Michigan. Gun Lake state park. We rented pontoon boats, Skidoos, and fishing boats. You will never regret camping vacations. I spent 250 a year for insurance, 250 a year for storage, 250 a year in upkeep (batteries, tires, propane, and a complete set of dishes, pots and pans etc dedicated just for the trailer) 250 a year in upgrades. But once we had a it where it was ready to go in an hour or two of deciding to travel somewhere, we were on the road. We would buy groceries on the way. We just had to pack our clothes and we were off and running. So now I am 75, my wife has passed away and I about 100 photo albums of my travels. When I retired, my first project was organizing all the photo in albums by trip and then year. I will usually pull one out a week to look at to remember how much fun we had over the years. The girls still talk about all the things they learned camping with mom and dad. From cooking over a fire, roasting marshmallows. fishing, skiing, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, doing the dishes, cleaning the grill, setting up camp, and a whole lot more. Enjoy your time with the kids, they grow up too fast. Sorry this is so long.

That was my first time I GOT A JOB AT THE BASIN at BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK after I graduated from Lovington N.Mexico State out of High School. Two of my Cousins were Park RANGERS part time due to going to college in ALPINE. So they convinced my parents that it was safe for me to work at THE BASIN. I LOVED IT, I fell in LOVE, make sure you go to Boquilla canyon and Santa Elena canyon, also the waterfall, I become a Rock climber after work at the Basin I had spectators as I climbed, which turned out as a show, the view from that angle top was awesome. It’s very ROCKY and you will see a breathless view. It’s right in front of the BASIN RESTAURANT, LOTS of SOUVENIRS Shops AND YES THEIR USED TO BE A CAMPING SITE JUST BELOW the Basin and when you reach the basin also, they do have motel & cabins. ENJOY.

Thanks for the video, it does remind me of my family's camping days so many years ago. I think we ran into all the same or similar problems up front, but my parents kept us entertained. I like the compost toilet idea, it makes so much sense not having the extra weight of the black-water tank and not having to empty it at various places around the country. I especially liked how you explained how it works - it has always been a complete mystery to me every time anyone ever mentioned one - and it may be a way the whole planet may have to move for our planet in crisis living. Thanks again for all the hard work you guys do! I also like the videos of reading to the kids - these are the times that really give our kids a chance to grow. Best wishes!

Nice caravan! (Ok, I’m a Brit😁) We’ve had a composting loo for a decade or so. I’ve found that softwood sawdust and woodchip from chainsawing works fine, just sprinkle a small scoop down the hole after each visit. When the bucket’s as full as seems wise it gets emptied out in the woods or bagged and, as you said, put aside for a year or so at which point it’s just excellent compost for trees and shrubbery. I won’t use it on any food crops but some do, apparently. One thing I’ve found to be an excellent addition is a mushroom cowled solar fan in the bathroom and loo roof, they’re pretty cheap and last a few years if you remember to cover them to stop them from operating when you’re not using the van. They don’t let water in and help keep the bathroom and loo dry and odour free, also keeping air going in the right direction…away from the living areas. Enjoy the van, you’ve earned it! Cheers, R. 😎👍🍻

For the compost toilet, I know folks with the same type and they use sawdust in the #2 bin each time it is used to keep down the smell. They have a large container of sawdust on the side of the toilet with a scoop which holds the exact amount needed.

My son and I recently spent a week in Big Bend. Prior to our adventure, we were given a tip for using our compost toilet. By placing a cup or two of livestock bedding pellets in the bottom of the bag; it helps absorb liquid and virtually omits any odor. The great part is the cost is pennies per use. Very inexpensive.

This! I've tried sawdust, free but messy. Then pine shavings. Also messy. The coconut coir and pear moss (expensive) finally horse bedding pellets. Cheap, less messy and works great!

There is nothing wrong with using conventional toilets that flush. We are not destroying this immense, beautiful, largely self-sustaining planet, by using flush toilets, cutting down trees, using gas grills or gas ovens, burning brush, using and/or driving combustion engine lawnmowers, cars, trucks, etc., relying on natural gas and coal-fired power plants, or anything that has been demonized for decades. It is a complete hoax (not to mention a huge money grab for green technology companies) that our reliance on fossil fuels has to end. For one thing, it will NEVER happen and CAN'T happen. So-called renewables are not really renewable. The only true renewable is trees. We can grow more trees, always, and they are beautiful and the irony is they thrive on carbon monoxide and provide much of our oxygen supply. Why is there not a big push to plant more trees?! Where there are trees, there are rainforests, remember that? Planting more trees would end most, if not all, of the air pollution that might exist. This is a provable, repeatable fact! As far as compost toilets, they are a huge labor-intensive hassle, extremely messy, and completely unnecessary. We have plenty of water on this planet. Don't forget, the Earth is covered by 75% WATER. Yes, it is mostly salt water but why not put tax dollars toward more desalinization equipment rather than bird & bat-murdering wind turbines and eagle-killing solar farms? That is so in-humane.

In Sweden, such toilets are used in the summer cottage and are called "dry waste" (torrdass) together with dry ash or sawdust which must be dry, this starts the decomposition. You sprinkle a scoop of this every time you do number 2. The urine you get can be diluted with water and poured out at the plot boundary to keep wild boar away.

ABOUT ODOR IN YOUR RESIDUAL BLACK TANK! We are long time RVer’s . An empty and clean black tank should have very little to no odor. There is a condition called “pyramiding” that occurs in black tanks that occurs when RVer’s leave their sewer line open or do not do a proper clean out. The remains in the black tank stick and are not flushed out. Residual odor then becomes a problem. We suggest a great flushing using a special wand you can purchase. Since you have removed the flush toliet, use the adapter for your sewer hose that also uses your clean water hose (not the hose for filling your clean water tanks). This sprays jet type water stream into the black tank to remove residual sewer water. You may need to let the tank soak for awhile. We also use vinegar to assist with clearing odor. Good luck and Happy Camping!

One thing I'd recommend for the outdoor grill, look for a oval-ish roaster lid and/or a square one off a electric frying pan. I don’t think they are moving. However, I think they bought new land and that is where the new cabin is going. If you watch the end of the video the area where the camper was is the new location. There is also a cut out driveway where the cabin can be brought in at. That’s my guess.

@@nickdisilvioii1475 I tend to agree…they probably bought a piece of land out of state to put the cabin on as a second/vacation home (maybe an AirBNB?).

We haven't found either vinegar or sugar to be helpful with odor in our separating toilet. We use a product called Nilodor urine digester and add a slosh to the bottom of the liquids bottle when it is empty. We also dilute some in a spray bottle to use as a flush but I would't do that with kids, I'd just add more product to start with and then use just water in a spray bottle. They have different scents available, we find the soft linen the least imposing. We started with coco coir but then liked aspen pet bedding from Walmart better. We also use wood pellets if the aspen isn't available.

Question... why is it that back in to 70's we rode in the back of pickups, crawled over the seats in the station wagons and at home had bunk bed with nothing stopping you from falling out of bed, etc. Today we want people to live in super clean lab like enviornments and bubble wrap suits. We have seen and evidenced that we are killing our immune systems trying to live in super clean environments. I will pass along your idea to the trucking industry and for those ho do team driving. Lord forbide yor co-driver have to jam on the breaks and roll you out of bed which has happened many times. I'm 51, been in super great health most of my life and do civil highway construction. Never had any disease, no surgeries, and only have had a broken toe or finger a few times. While I'm all for child safety, we again see how kids today are such wussies! They need to toughen up. Roll out of bed a couple of times and you won't need any netting. You learn to stay away from the edge!
@danagrey3534
@danagrey3534 11 месяцев назад
@@lindaashbrook6789 Hmm? May our kids were the exception and today's kids can't sleep due to how crazy this country and world has gotten. All four of our kids slept like a rock Maybe the played harder and were wore out more? I don't know. It only took me rolling off of the top bunk a couple of times to learn not to do that anymore. Scared the crap out of my sisters, and my mom switch us and my sisters did it once or twice and I don't recall any of us doing that again! I understand your concerns for safety but then we should require that all adult beds have cargo netting around them. My spouse and our dog has rolled me out of bed a few times. Our kids today have become such soft wussies. I hate to be a smart ass but as a parent, should I require my girls to wear bubble wrap to play softball, basket ball, volleybally and soccer? And my boys, the same to play football, wrestling, basket ball, and soccer? Just asking...

Spencer Mack, loving the longer videos! I watch a few other off grid type channels as well as a few in other genres and them like you guys are doing something that I see is becoming more sought after regardless of the content of one's channel... longer vids, 30-60 mins and not full of ads or sponsored crap! There is one nameless western off grid container channel similar to you guys. They also have great content , but between the ads and the sponored content added in, it's no longer enjoyable to watch! I consistently see more and more comments telling the channel owners and creators they want longer videos and less ads, sponsored crap and asking for money, followers, subs and added amazon wishlist links. The above channel, after their 4th or 5th year now they are still at 200K subs. You two hit 1 million in just 2 0r 3 years? Your channel and the dozen or so channels all have awesome content, not asking for money, subs, have tons of ads (like 1 every 3-5 mins), do the sponsored ads, products, services, etc, and you all have well over 1 million loyal followers! YAY!!!! IF YOU ARE A COMMERCIAL OR PRO PHOTOGRAPHER READING THIS, I would love to thank you for the fact that Spencer & Mackinzie and others cannot film for commercial use in State & National Parks becuase over pat decades, you all have abused "public" property while charging clients ungodly amounts while conducting "commercial" business and disturbing other users of the parks to the point where now you need a commercial photography permit to photography or film in our state and national parks. Even 20 years later, I still see you guys in photography groups try to buck the system, not get a $50 (+/-) permit, yet charge your clients, (often landscape or wedding photogs) thousand of dollars, and when you get caught with a ton of people, using multiple tripods, stobes, softboxes, etc, you all still want to whine complain and bitch. I have seen in recent year those who still try to buck the system get caught by the feds after bucking the system of getting a petty permit and now you had remove those photos and videos and pay hefty fines. It prettt easy to see you are engaging in "commercial" business and look at you content and seeState & National parks in the background. So thanks for ruining it for people like Spencer, Mackenzie and the rest of us!!! Mackenzie & Spencer, keep rocking and love you content!!!

Hi guys, happy to see you happy 🙂 Concerning the big secret, that looks like a minor mountain - which, as I am going to hazard a guess, is on a new bit of land you've bought. Now, the question becomes: What are you going to do with it? The answer is simple and straight forward: A huge end-of-days hardened mountain base! I mean, what else? 😀
