I remember the gym I joined in my teens, i think I was 14, back in the early 80's. The owner was a former national bodybuilding champion back in the late 50's I think. It was in a space the size of maybe a 3 car garage, no A.C, only a ceiling fan and most of the weights, barbells, dumbells and machines were a mix of home made and professional. They were crude but just as effective as these shiny new machines in these country club gyms today. Several professional bodybuilders trained there so it wasn't a gym to muck around in especially when they were there. I was the only kid there but if you were there to train seriously and they saw the effort, they would help you out, spot you, give you tips and stuff. I used to spot on the bench press and squat for this one guy who was a multiple national bodybuilding champion. It was a thrill for me. You could make all the freaking noise you want as long as you were working out and the only rule was wipe the benches down after. It was gritty, dark, hot most of the time ( i lived in the tropics) and smelled like sweaty ass and cast iron, i used to go outside for fresh air between sets. 😁 I loved that gym.

Damn, gold's gym has the same rules as planet fitness, that's so sad that the gym famous for legendary body builders has become that shitty

I’ve been going to golds Venice for years. Only the front desk wouldn’t know these guys. The members would. The front desk are young kids working for minimum wage, they’re not gym rats.
