Homelander's reaction to Ryan to the crowd shows he knows how overwhelming the powers can be, so he behaves like a understanding father figure for the first time since meeting Ryan and gets him out of there as fast as possible. It doesn't make up for all he's done, but I think it's a glimpse to what Homelander could've been if he was raised like a child and not a science experiment

@@nikolakaravida4087 Sociopaths (Which isn’t an actual clinically term) refers to individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). People with ASPD are more than capable of forming numerous emotional connections with other people. I think what you see with home lander, (let me be clear, I’m not diagnosing him, only stating what I think is likely in his situation), is factor 1 psychopathy, narcissistic personality disorder, and ASPD. Only very few individuals with psychopathy have been shown to form very slight emotional connections with other people. So homelander could be one of those individuals UPDATE: Upon doing further research into the topic, psychopaths are born, not created. So homelander would be a sociopath. This scene makes Ryan choosing Billy over Homelander SO much more painful. You can tell HL really wants to be a dad. He wants to be the parent he never had. Problem is he just doesn’t have those skills and instincts yet. He’s struggling to let out his warmth after a lifetime of it being smothered and repressed. And then his son chooses his actual biggest enemy over him. Over his best efforts. Yeah. Homielanders gonna go insane.

@elistari1050
@elistari1050 8 месяцев назад
You aren't wrong, the thing is that Homelander does lack humanity. The idea of humanity comes from human behavior. With your logic, ANYTHING is "humanity". Being a sociopath who is okay with and actively wants to kill people, and rape people, and ruin people's lives and be an overall terrible person. Humanity is mostly about emotion. Someone who lacks all emotion would be seen as "inhuman". Only ever being sad, only every being angry, only every being happy, only ever being indifferent would be inhuman, since humans are supposed to experience the full range of emotions, including more complex emotions like love, compassion, disgust, etc. Homelander tends to lack in the happiness, compassion, and love department, and if you ket anyone who has no compassion, love, or happiness, you would call them inhuman, too.
@godzillazfriction
@godzillazfriction 8 месяцев назад
@@elistari1050 nobody ever uses that term of 'humanity' in context to someone like Homelander... humans just love to generalise something or someone that is different to the usual boundaries and 'inhuman' is just another st1pid term to differentiate others

@@elistari1050 and haven't you watched the show including Diabolical EP. 8 about Homelander... how tf does he lack the emotions that you've listed... if you want to talk about happiness then him killing others would be considered as happiness for him but you and i dont know what goes in his head... he clearly wants love for himself mainly but can feel compassion for others such as his son or empathise for him since he does relate to his son a lot and wants his son to not be raised the same way as John (aka Homelander) did

At 2:33 in the video I like how Homelander has this switch in his face when he sees Ryan. It’s so natural looking and his eyes convey a deep story of pain and empathy. The whole interaction he has in that moment really give me pain in knowing that his humanity is so detached that when it is shown it’s like a cold reminder of the world he was born in.

It's significant that the only time Homelander acts like a genuine parent is when Ryan's powers are acting up. It's the only thing Homelander has any empathy for Ryan about, because Homelander himself likely went through something similar. In that moment, he looked at Ryan and saw his younger self, and he's such a narcissist that the only person he can show compassion to is himself.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire show. Homelander is a monster. No way around that. However, its clear he wants to be a father. He wants to give Ryan what he never had. Theres no way around this. He doesn't know how to do that though, but you can clearly see he is trying. It shows how even a monster can have even a little tiny piece of good in them. However, after Ryan chooses to go with Butcher, that was the moment every little bit of hope Homelander had about being a father and have something nice, was ripped away from him, and then we get the Homelander in season 3 that just doesn't care anymore.

I love that despite all the despicable actions Homelander has done in the series, he’s genuinely trying his best to a good father for Ryan in this clip. He tries to take him out eat a restaurant but when he sees his son isn’t feeling well because of the crowd and his heightened hearing, he escorts Ryan out cause he knows how overwhelming it is at that age putting Ryan’s safety and well being above his own time in the spotlight which we know he absolutely loves. Arguably Ryan did help bring out the best in Homelander

I mean ok sure, every serial killer can be just as loving but it doesn't make him a good person, he's still a psychopath incarnate. The only problem is it isn't all homelander's fault. He was raised by people who only cared about what he could do for them. In an absolute loveless environment, where he's never had hardships that life brings. Most likely he did get every single thing he wanted without discipline. He was brought up to be exactly this person, so I don't blame him too much. But even with all that it seems in his own twisted way he actually cares for his son.

You know, that's one of the things I find really interesting about sociopaths, when compared to psychopaths. Although the two should be incapable of feeling empathy, in some situations sociopaths can feel something close to empathy for someone and even feel bad about hurting or doing some kind of harm to them. The series managed to represent that in Homelander in a very good and coherent way with Ryan. You can clearly see, as the narrative progresses and how it's built, that Homelander eventually starts to really seem to care about Ryan and his well being in some moments, despite being a narcissistic sociopath (That happens because of some things the narrative has built into his character, but the most important ones in my opinion would be: Homelander's desperation for love and connections with people + the fact that he see himself and part of his own pain in Ryan).

It's so odd. Homelander is trying to convert to his way of things, yet Ryan changes something in Homelander, brings out whatever good is/was left in him. He genuinely cares that Ryan was panicking, and got him out of that situation. Homelander is irredeemable, without a doubt. But it's like when it comes to Ryan, we can see a phantom of the hero/person Homelander could have been. It doesn't excuse a single thing he has done, but let's remember: Homelander wasn't born, he was created, by Vought.
