Philippe Sands, a law professor and international barrister, spoke about genocide and crimes against humanity, and decolonization and self-determination. He offered tales from the legal front line-on Ukraine and Russia, Israel and Palestine, and the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean (Mauritius and the UK). He spoke with Professor Monica Hakimi, who is an expert in public international law, the use of force, U.S. foreign relations law, human rights, and national security.
Philippe Sands is professor of law at University College London and a visiting professor at Harvard Law School. He is the author of numerous books, including East West Street (2016, Alfred Knopf) and The Last Colony (2023, Alfred Knopf). His next book, to be published in 2025, is on Pinochet in London.
Monica Hakimi is the William S. Beinecke Professor of Law at Columbia University and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law.
