For the last Century, Ocean Lifeguards across Southern California have used and tested a variety of rescue devices. In this episode of Tales from the Tower, we take a look at the evolution of the Rescue Can from its earliest prototypes to what we currently use today. Every lifeguard knows the rescue can (or tube) is the difference between life and death, that’s why you will never see a lifeguard without it.

Having not served in the military I cannot speak from experience but I have come to understand that infantry training includes the sort of “never without it” mentality in regard to their rifle that was drilled into us as rookies for the rescue can, including, whatever, taking it with you to the head etc. Arthur I miss you pal. You came to our first day of the Training Academy in 1997 and covered a lot of this. One thing I will never forget is what a novel concept it was in George Freeth’s time to swim into the water after someone in trouble. It’s something we take for granted now of course but as you explained it was not always like that.

i wonder why lifeguarding agencies in California for example california state parks still use the rescue tube and not the rescue can and asyou said the tube can only hold up at most 2 people.

The problem is on a response where there is unconscious victim then you can’t use a tube

Lt. Jack Campbell told me that all guards retire from guarding and end up in office or retiring at age 55.

Why are the cans healed above their heads? Is it so the tower can see their location on the beach or in a crowd?

Yes. Our Lifeguards regularly raise there cans above their heads in order to be visible to other lifeguards on the beach.
