Holy crap. I actually got this last weekend too. I just finished recording my video about it and didn't notice the mofi thing until I watched your video. That is freaking awesome. Glad I signed up.

+The Vinyl Potato Caught your video on my phone on the way into work and it was fantastic! I agree with trying the service on a month to month basis. They do run the gamut of genres and several of their releases have resonated with me. Thanks for watching Will.

Hi PaulI love your new TOTD series. I know nothing about how to read the deadwax. So I'm really looking forward to the future episodes. What a nice surprise that the VMP of may is actually a MoFi press :)

+My Analog Corner - Carsten Olsen - Likewise. And I've long been a fan of deciphering all the deadwax can offer. Much like stamps/backstamps and markings on pottery, there's often very cool stuff to be found there. Great idea for a series and I'm looking forward to it. As for VMP, I was a member for a while, but I canceled my membership (after last month's Fugees) as the whole process really wasn't my cup of tea. Great bunch of folks over there though. A+ customer service.

+NeedleGroove If you get a chance I would be curious. Somehow they hooked up with ORG and got an exclusive Black Lion release of a '67 Dexter Gordon set. I picked it up as a curated add on and was impressed with it. They are making some really good connections. I do hope the can continue to promote the Needle Groove stuff.

The first thing I noticed when putting this on my table was that the Pressing was fantastic. I am one who did not know any Weezer beyond Blue or Green. My loss to say the least. The sound is second to none. Thank you for the heads up on it being a MoFi Release in disguise. Be well Paul.

+BarakaPDub Yes by the way I have a new set or speakers. I have a set of JBL L7 Speakers that are refurbished and new crossovers are being made as I write. They will now have all audio grade caps and resistors and so on. I am also searching for the Rega of my dreams. I will be back soon enough with a video or two.

Great to hear you're enjoying the album , great detective work! Never really got into Weezer , maybe at one point. So much stuff to listen to , so little time.
@BarakaPDub

+helmut Diggy This album is not the one to start with. I really got into the Blue album after MTV was playing 'The Sweater' album non stop. When this album came out, I was ecstatic and picked it up. Boy was I ever disappointed. I was inline with the critics and fans that panned it when it came out. At the time my purchasing power was much, much less so I played it more and it grew on me. It's a grower. Nowadays though, I don't have any patience for growers which might be bad in someways. With the advent of the Internet, the VC, and so many ways to get your music, I will often search for something new if it doesn't strike me upon first listen.

nice to hear! i just subscribed to vmp last month (the score) and i did a 3 month test subscription to test those guys out. i am not the biggest fun of this album (never hear it before) but i would love to check out how this will sound on my system! hope u are fine paul...
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+johnk TechHead So this one did not grab me at first either. I was a fan of the blue album when it came out because of 'The Sweater' song but when this was dropped, like a lot of people, I thought it was crap. It took some time for it to grow on me. My buying power was limited at the time and I played it multiple times and then got into it. Nowadays, I don't have that kind of patience with so much music being available through the internet and the VC.

Great idea for a series Paul. My VMP days are over, for now. That Dexter Gordon release from their store is way more interesting to me than the last two releases. In fact, I think I enjoy the Jazz selections they come up with in the store more than the AOTM. Thanks for sharing! -Stav

I think it's cool that you teach your viewers about Mastering. Like who's a great Mastering Engineering and who's not. Because that's what audio is about. I know, because I'm a Sound Engineer. Although I do mostly ads for TV and Radio. :-)
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+Noel Nuñez Thanks Noel and I hope you are doing well. The more I am learning about mastering, the greater the appreciation I have for the folks that are under recognized and behind the scenes. If mastering for TV and Radio takes some skill because it is a completely different medium. Its very cool to learn more about you and your background. Please let me know though if I say anything that is totally incorrect.
8 лет назад
That is correct. It does take a certain kind of skill to engineer for ads. And skill for us because producers wants everything louder and louder. But we can't make their wishes come true because we have to follow the networks guidelines. Oh, I'm doing great, by the way. Thanks, Paul. ☺

+BarakaPDub Got to listen to my copy today. I got along with the music just fine. My big complaint is the sound quality. VMP has in excess of 10,000 members. Maybe they only used one stamper. I think the original recording was done poorly. It was mixed at Ocean Way, so that shouldn't be the problem.
@bumblesby
@bumblesby 8 лет назад
I was just listening to this today and never having heard Weezer before, I didn't know what to expect. It is one of those bands that use a lot of "fuz" lo-fi (to my ear anyways), so I can't say the mastering/pressing really matters much :) At least I can understand most of the lyrics. Some newer bands like Bon Iver I can't understand a word they sing - although I like the music.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
So with this particular album, I wouldn't recommend to anyone that isn't familiar with the band. I don't consider it accessible upon first listen. I can understand why VMP chose it given their predominate demographic that's apart of their service. I suppose if this were my first exposure to the band, I would consider it a bunch of noise and even at the time of it's release, I didn't get it and thought I wasted my money. If your familiar with Madame Butterfly and the associated story with the making of the album you gain more appreciation for it. The Nada Surf album the put out a couple of months back, didn't work for me so I elected to pass it on to someone that might appreciate it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Paul, are you going to Hilton record show tomorrow? I will be there at 10:00. Great video by the way. I passed on this since I already have the MoFi pinkerton. Nice to know that it is a good pressing. Cheers JD

+Spin The Black? Circle (JD) I plan on being there as well! I don't know if I will be able to make it right when they open in the morning but shortly there afterwards. We'll have to hook up again. The Mofi version of Pinkerton was on my want list. Now that I know where the VMP was sourced, it moved further down on the list. Does the Mofi version have the pop up artwork in the gatefold out of curiosity?
@jdamorocho4324
@jdamorocho4324 8 лет назад
+BarakaPDub no it does not have that. It has the lyrics on the right side and photos and credits on the left. I can only stay until 11:30 since I have another thing at lunchtime.

Cool series, Paul and an enjoyable episode. I haven't spun up my VMP copy yet. With the stamper having the MFSL crossed out, is that an indication that the stamper(s) for this VMP run is used, and they're now being used to stamp the VMP versions? If so, sound quality could be an issue, no? Cheers! Tom
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+High Rant District It really depends on how they produced their stampers. They could have went back to the original lacquer or back to the mother to make the VMP stamper. MFSL doesn't have large runs so the audio shouldn't be too compromised but in truth, each time you make a new mother, a new stamper and each time you use the stamper you get a little degradation. Whether it's audible or not is another story but mine had a nice clean sound to it.
@highrantdistrict
@highrantdistrict 8 лет назад
"Whether it's audible or not is another story" is probably an apt way to put it. I'll spin my copy today. I read that some folks were getting warped copies but mine seems fine. The cardboard used to make the outer sleeve is pretty flimsy. All that said, my VMP annual subscription is a holiday gift so I shouldn't complain about what I'm getting for free!

Hi Paul, The new series looks like an interesting one. You know I never listened to Weezer's 'Pinkerton' in full. I only heard one or two songs off the first side. Well now, nothing shabby about getting a MoFi pressing on your May release. Call me deadwax dumb but I did not get why the matrix # was scratched out for another one? Are you saying that VMP bought so many from MoFi and then re-released them under their name? I am really looking forward to seeing which one makes the series next. Top notch series idea P~ Rob/Boston
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+Paneeks1960 {Rob/Boston} So the scratch out was interesting and only the guys at RTI/VMP/Mofi would know for sure. My only guess is that Mofi got a cut for VMP to use the stampers but they wanted VMP to have their own stampers manufactured from their mother. Doing this, Mofi's product wouldn't get diluted if they had to return to used VMP stampers. Each stamper is good for about 1000 LPs before it wears out and even the stamper grooves will degrade during the stamping process. I think Mofi still has Pinkerton in print so if they had to return to press it up again, they didn't want to use VMP stamper that was on the 999th copy. That's only a guess on my part though.

I've taken your recommendation on half price books and was wondering if you were in the Atlanta area cuz there's like two locations here.....
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 6 лет назад
Sadly, I've been to Atlanta more times than I can count but only in the airport. I really need to get a day or two layover there. Half Price Books is pretty prevalent in the midwest and south. In Houston, I think we have seven or eight different stores scattered through the city.

It must be desirable for that reason. I'm not a weezer fan so I flipped my copy on my ebay page and sold it within half an hour of it being posted. People really dig mofi pressings I must say.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
+Jimmy M I don't blame you. This album is not one that immediately grabs people and it didn't do it for me when I picked up after the Blue Album. At the time, like a lot of critics, I thought it was complete crap. It took sometime for it to grow on me and most people don't have the patience for growers. I know for one if this album was released today, I wouldn't have even bothered.
@jamesmoir7709

***** Well I was never a weezer fan in general except for the hit singles. I understand your point. But people must like it since on my e shop I sold it within half an hour of being posted.

I bought this album the day it came out. I didn't LOVE the first album, but immediately loved this one. I don't get why it wasn't popular when it was released, but I am glad it has become a cult classic.

+dixielandfarm I was quite the reverse and was with all of the critics at the time. I kept thinking I wasted my money but since my budget was limited at the time, I played it several times more and it grew on me. Now that I know the context in which it was written, my appreciation for it has grown.

No sweat if not. I'm not obsessing over the album, but I'm more curious to know more about the workings of VMP. That is, are they using a degraded stamper(s) to cost-effectively put out the versions they do? Cheers, Tom
@exiletomars
@exiletomars 7 лет назад
So, save for having to be a member of vmp, the cost of pinkerton(you can still buy it from their shop) is like, $8 cheaper, although used ones on discogs are a bit cheaper, but oh well.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 7 лет назад
I think picking it up elsewhere might be smart. I am sure that VMP has a considerable markup on their releases just to keep the club operating in the black.
