Beautiful Beautiful! RTI made sure they would be the best for years to come when they Purchased Sheffield Labs presses and all that went with it. As part of the deal many of the people from Sheffield were brought over to RTI to make sure they could work the Presses and to carry on the tradition of outstanding work at Sheffield. Brilliant move by RTI IMHO.

Total antitheses to United: RTI. Always a joy to find something is pressed there. And also on the contrary to United, it's fairly common to be able to tell from the outside that it's an RTI pressing, the loose bag a usual indicator. Hardly ever an issue with their product. I have found however that the frosted inner sleeves from RTI pressings that are 5-6 old now have some leeching on the records. It usually clears up even with a dry record brush cleaning, but it is disappointing and I'll have to start replacing those sleeves.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Interesting on the leeching from their bags. I haven't had any issues but maybe I should go back and check 'em. Hope you're doing well Dan.
@vinylfury
@vinylfury 8 лет назад
It was disappointing to see, for sure. I always thought they were great. I did notice their inner sleeves got a little more smooth and clear and not as 'frosted' a few years ago, maybe to combat the possible leeching. I'd definitely take a look at RTI pressings from 2009-2012 especially. Thanks man, doing alright. A video from me is definitely long overdue.

It is almost nuts that my purchasing decisions have been swayed based on the pressing plants - and when I see RTI and QRP, that does sway me. I also prefer those polybags over the Rice Paper hybrid Mofi sleeves - I also like the thinner Sleeve City bags because getting them in and out is a bit easier, especially if you have an insert or another sleeve in the record.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
I hate it because with all of the bands I like, it's a crap shoot any more. My only known is when I go for the occasional audiophile release. I have a few Sleeve City bags but really haven't given them a good try. I'll definitely keep them in mind when my stock starts to dwindle.

Funny. There used to be a record distributor based in Omaha called RTI (Records & Tapes Incorporated). They closed down some time in the 90s. Used to own a record store chain here called Homer's which used to have 18 stores. They have one now.

Hi Paul, Hearing that the biggies like MoFi and Music Matters are using RTI for their production says a whole lot. I was just going to ask you about Analogue Productions and Quality Records but you beat me to the punch. I did not know that AP was going through RTI at all. I bought two of their albums that were released in the last two years. I saw the Quality Records hype on the front cover. > Those RTI Test Pressings are awesome. > Thanks to you I got to experience what a Blue Note 75th 45rpm pressing sounds like. I am going to check out the matrix so I can tell where this one was pressed. Outstanding info Paul. I love this series. I am looking forward to TOTD #6~ Rob/Boston

Thanks Rob. QRP might make for a good follow up and get into the evolution of the company. The problem with QRP though is that they don't appear to have a specific catalog system they inscribe into their deadwax but occasionally, there is one indicator. Maybe I can get to this one next week. At the very least, it would be interesting to talk the history of the plant.

Another great video. RTI is definitely my favorite of the US plants, and is one of the top worldwide. I'm not sure about Friday Music. I have two albums pressed by them and both had Rhino on them. I know that RTI once pressed Rhino's albums, but I don't think that they have for a number of years.

Honestly, while it's not to say RTI doesn't have something bad slip out once in awhile, I have found just about all of their pressings to be damn silent and flat. Dilenma ! I hesitate between a Columbia_RTI (RSD april 2013 - $20) and a Columbia_MFSL_RTI (July 2013 - $22) version of "Miles Davis "Round around Midnight". Fanstastic prices specially the MFSL but ... Which one should I choose? :)
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Go with the MFSL and don't look back. And here is my rationale. 1.) Mobile Fidelity will not have rights to this music forever and Columbia can press another batch using the same stampers whenever they so choose. 2.) While both masterings are fantastic, Columbia used a digital source; whereas, Mobile Fidelity used the master tapes in this instance (at least that's the claim). 3.) If you decide you don't like the MFSL, you can easily get a return on your investment. With the Columbia pressing, there is no guarantee of this. 4.) Mobile Fidelity has better jackets. The kind with the tip on cover for the Miles Davis releases. Columbia uses card stock. Hope this helps!

Well... I ordered a MFSL version and I received the RSD.2013_RTI version (with the detachable top part of the shrink missing). But... The seller apologized for his mistake and paid my money back and I can keep the "wrong". So, yeah... not so bad ! :)

@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Thanks Bill. So I lucked out on the Blue Notes coming from United. Blue Note was smart and didn't have the lacquers cut there. They had Bernie Grundman do all of the lacquers and he is one of the best in the business. After the lacquers are cut, I can only assume they have them shipped to the plant that can bang them the quickest.

The BN75s being pressed at URP is exactly why I haven't bought them. I'd rather spend $5-10 on a used BN McMaster CD than those. Dealing with defects isn't worth my time. I didn't know some of the BN75 was also being sent to RTI. If there was a way to know for sure I might buy some of those. Too bad we can't easily get the Euro BN75s over here...IIRC those were done at Optimal in Germany.
@dietchapstick7890
@dietchapstick7890 8 лет назад
Another FYI: the old pink tinted inners that RTI used to use can scratch records. The frosted clear inners they use now are better, but you need to be careful removing the record from inner...the little lip at the opening can scratch the LP.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
It explains why they may have went with a redesign. I have a number of records with the old pink tint and never had an issue with scratching thankfully. The older Music Matters and Analogue Productions had the pink tinted ones. Thanks for the tip.

@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Thanks...although one of my commenters below mentioned that Erika (based In California) also uses the same numbering scheme as well so I am going to have to check the releases a little more closely to see if there is anything that would distinguish the two companies. Since they are so close, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of company employee swaps.
@recordtechnology9902
@recordtechnology9902 5 лет назад
The 5 digit number in the dead wax discussed in this video is RTI's in-house catalog number for our plating department. Btw, the number in parenthesis tells you if it's a 1, 2, or 3 step. In addition to our own plating, RTI also makes stampers for a number of other pressing plants, like Erika. So just because you see an RTI house number on the record doesn't mean it was pressed at RTI.
@andyt2220
@andyt2220 2 года назад
@@recordtechnology9902 Can you elaborate on the 1, 2 & 3 step processes? Does 2 indicate a 2 step process? & what are the 2 step & 3 Step processes?
@joshmartimez2235
@joshmartimez2235 4 года назад
I have some Classic Records pressings that I'll have to check the dead wax to see if they were pressed at RTI. Most of my Analogue Productions records were pressed at Quality. I believe i only have two AP records that were pressed at RTI. All the RTI pressed records i own are defect free. If im not mistaken the Tone Poets are being pressed at RTI. Great in depth video look at RTI.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 4 года назад
Classic Records used three different plants as far as I am aware. They started out in the business using Rainbo. I have an early Who pressing which was made before they got on their 180 gram kick. I think the record was 140 gram and I hate to say it but it has the classic Rainbo non-fill. When they moved over to doing 180 gram presses, they started pressing at RTI and then later they started pressing at Bob Smith's Custom Records. All of their plating was done at RTI since Bob Smith didn't have a plating facility so in some cases it's hard to tell where it came from. The RTI code wasn't put in all of the plates and the only way I know this is from the test presses I managed to collect. You're correct on the Tone Poets and this comes from Music Matters using the same facility. Thanks for watching another older video Josh.

@dietchapstick7890
@dietchapstick7890 8 лет назад
FYI Erika uses a similar numbering scheme so it's easy to get the two mixed up sometimes. They tend to use different inners though and most labels using either plant are usually fairly up front about it when asked.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Didn't know that at all and thanks for making me aware. I guess I am going to have to compare the two pretty closely and it is likely to be very confusing. I know Erika does picture discs which I have never been a big fan of but I do have a few. I will have to look at them closely to see if they cam from there. I am not aware of RTI doing picture discs as it would go against the company goals.
@dietchapstick7890

All my Erika stuff is just on regular vinyl, since I don't buy picture discs. Sub Pop presses a lot of stuff there. LITA recently started doing some LPs there also like the recent This Heat reissues. Older LITA stuff was done at Rainbo. I know Numero is moving some production from URP to Erika as well.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
That's good news. I have a number of LITA and Numero releases. My past few Numero albums were pressed at URP so I am happy to hear that they are looking somewhere else. I haven't dug into Erika yet but do you know if they are using SMT presses? I thought about including that kind of information but then again, it might get too nerdy for most.

Hey Paul great video! Just curious how certain are we about the deadwax number in parenthesis ? I've seen this brought up in a couple of videos now. I find it interesting that it would be basically a one step process if it was (2). I've seen limited runs by small bands with the (2). I also have a Mingus One Step and it's got a (1). I wonder if they changed that for those pressings at the request of MOFI. Interesting.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub Год назад
Hello AtTheRockShow...I really need to do an addendum to this video. RTI reached out to me and commented that they've been doing a lot of plating for other plants. If you see a (1), this means it is a one step and they're using the father for making the record. If you see a (2), this means they went as far as making the mother and the stampers could have done by another plating plant. A (3) reflects the full process but they said they have done stampers for other plants. A (1) is the only way to guarantee it came from RTI unless you see it on the hype sticker. I've also noticed that is you see one of those milky clear inners, it's a good chance it came from RTI. RTI is the only plant that I am aware of that uses those types of clear inners.

Great video and great series. I have a lot of respect for your "outlook" and "Style" and "knowledge" as a collector/ audiophile(stereophile). Many 'collectors' are not necessarily 'stereophiles', and vice versa. I happen to take collecting and collecting knowledge seriously, and I take high-end audio seriously as well. Anyway, I have a lot of experience with RTI; I know Don and Reid McKinnis well. I'm located in North Los Angeles and RTI is of course in North L.A. (Camarillo, Ca). I know the plant like the back of my hand and I agree with you in regards to RTI being thee top in North America. I'm actually familiar wth everyone over at Rainbo too (friends with the President of Rainbo) That's a great plant as well... Not like RTI at all, but then again they have a different focus than RTI does... Different goals so to speak. I've sat in the Mastering lab at RTI many times where all the great MoFi pressings, like Steely Dans "Aja" was mastered and cut... Awesome place.

Great episode Paul. It's nice to hear about a pressing plant that takes pride in being excellent at pressing records. great to see. I have the new Kills album but haven't cracked it open yet. I'll look for the RTI info in the deadwax. I was stunned to see an audiophile (?) version of Filth. I've got an original version, plus a counterfeit version )and a CD version) and I'm surprised at someone re-doing an album of that style of music. As to the Clear bags, is it anecdotal that they do not leech into the vinyl, or is there something specific about those bags that prevents that problem from happening? Cheers! Tom EDIT TO ADD: I just read your reply to Rob about the bags!

@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
I hope you'll like the Kills album. I have been enjoying it thus far. I was concerned it wouldn't be as good as their last outing but I was decently surprised. As for Filth, I think the issue of 'To Be Kind' built a cult following of people (myself included) and there has been a little bit of interest in their back catalog. Because of (2) in the deadwax, it's clear they didn't press up a lot of these. It's cool you have an original of Filth. I looked at originals on Discogs and there not necessarily cheap so I went with this reissue.

On the RTI stuff, I do agree it can be priced high. The Miles Davis stuff issued by Sony was done really well and those can be had for around $20. On Black Lion reissues, I think ORG had done a fantastic job. All were pressed in Germany as far as I can remember. The Miles Davis I would pass up on. Not that it's a bad record but it was recorded far before he was in his prime. I think the set was taken from the mid to late 40's before he developed his own style. So I have heard some interesting things about where this album was pressed but your markers are from RTI so the plates came from there. The .4(3) is a bit of a mystery for me. RTI is excellent. In the first dozen years that I did CDs, I went through RTI to have them made. I was always hearing from them how the vinyl was doing. I finnaly had to go somewhere else as they went 100% vinyl.

It's a shame they dropped their CD line. There is a lot of digital bashing but I still love the format and was hoping SACD would latch on but alas it never did.

Never got into SACDs. If the format had latched on and good SACD players weren't so expensive I may have tried them. I'm dipping my toe into hi-rez digital now but still prefer a regular CD because it's what I'm used to and doesn't require hard drive space. Eventually I will get a NAS set up, but that's a ways off. It's funny how CDs, especially among the younger crowd, are the most "uncool" thing out there. Many don't even know what a CD sounds like played over a decent stereo.

A positive spin to balance things out. Interesting about to identify the rti from the deadwax. The lady doing the interview was super annoying. Wait, I just spent $25 on a bag of mofi sleeves. I'm putting them on my most valuable records. You are saying leeching might occur!?
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 8 лет назад
Yeah, I am surprised the lady didn't get any feedback on her mannerisms. The entire collection of clips is worthwhile to watch to get more insight into the company. On the Mofi's, I wouldn't worry. The problem happened a couple of years back and they halted production on them because of the leeching. I have since bought several batches and haven't had another problem. If leeching does occur, I have had success with washing it off. I prefer the Clearbags just because of the overall rigidity and they don't fold over as easily when being inserted in the jacket.

@@BarakaPDub As it should be in my opinion, one can miss out otherwise; Personally I just like good music, whatever form that may take. To answer your question though haha, I'm a huge Swans fan and they're still easily in my top ten if I had to break it down. Opened my eyes to what music could be as an experience, and a physical one at that. Real quick if I may, would you say you have a favorite project/era of theirs?

I would say the recent trilogy of albums starting with the Seer are my personal favorites. I like the epic long journey that each album takes you on.

The Van Halen (Dave) remasters are from RTI, EXCELLENT records! I hope Eddie could stop being a twat and allow the Sammy era to be reissued and done at RTI as well.

Can I ask your opinion on something you mention here? I was trading back some old records for trade value at Amoeba Records in San Francisco on Friday, and here's what their buyer told me "If you want me to buy or take your records next time, don't store them in plastic or plastic lined inner bags, use paper." (commenting when viewing my Mofi inner sleeve. I asked Why and he replied "They leave a film on your records and that film can damage your needle." - Have you heard of this?
@TONEScott
@TONEScott 8 лет назад
Hi Steven, I will say confidently, that the buyer is full of sh%#. If you buy really horribly cheap polylined sleeves , this might apply. BUT, you'll be able to tell because the will leave a visible residue on your records. Most poly lined sleeving today, is pretty darn safe. Most well respected record plants from the U.S. To Japan use polyethylene sleeving to pack the vinyl in. If it was a problem, they would not use it. They're not going to risk their reputation as a pressing plant for the sake of using damaging poly inner sleeving. The guy at Ameoba doesn't know what he's speaking on. ....just my educated opinion.
@dietchapstick7890
@dietchapstick7890 8 лет назад
There is an ocean of difference between MOFI or Sleeve City inners vs. the cheap crap from years ago that could harm records by sticking to the vinyl or outgassing. That's what the buyer was probably worried about, and probably too ignorant to know the difference. Find a different place to trade in albums or sell them privately.
@BarakaPDub

I disagree with the guy at Amoeba as well. Mofi did have a problem with their inner sleeve production which has now since been corrected. The leeching problem I had was easily corrected with a good washing. A plastic inner is preferred since it won't scuff or, in theory, leave anything within the grooves of the vinyl. Keep in mind, you could have been dealing with an ignorant individual that isn't very knowledgeable on the subject. If the audiophile labels are using anything but paper, then that's a clear sign that paper is bad.
@dietchapstick7890
@dietchapstick7890 8 лет назад
A lot of record store people are not audiophiles at all and just going by what they know. I know one guy that said he hated any type of plastic or plastic lined inner because he once examined a collection he was going to buy but many of the records were damaged from being exposed to extreme heat and being stored in cheaply made poly-lined inners. Even if they had been stored in paper, I'm sure a lot of those albums would've been warped anyway.

not being audiophiles would make sense with their best selection of records in the world and yet they promote AudioTechnica turntables..

Greetings. 1) It would be great if everyone could chime in on which Blue Note 75th Anniversary LP's they have which feature the RTI matrix in the run-off/dead wax... If we work together we can suss-out these titles. I'm way more inclined to spend $20 on an RTI pressing, especially on the harder to get/more expensive BN titles. For instance, side A of my 75th Anniv copy of "The Real McCoy" features this matrix nomenclature: B0020428-01 A GI - then some strange lines with a sideways S inside, and a J inside a circle - its also stamped "MASTERED BY CAPITAL" - One down, 100 to go ;) 2) It would also be great to do some comparisons of "Connoisseur Series" pressings vs RTI pressed 75th Anniv pressings. Oftentimes one can find these connoisseur series BN titles for $20. It must be safe to presume these were cut from master tapes. 3) as a follow up to your last Music Matters jazz comments, Ron Rambach told me that some of the BN master tapes aren't sounding good any longer. Between the time he cut the 45 of "Song For My Father", and a recent attempt at the tapes for a 33rpm issue, the tape has "died"... All the more reason to get cracking on the best strategy for picking up the best sounding titles sooner than later... Thanks-David

1.) The J inside of a circle is likely a U which indicates a United pressing. While I can't say definitely, the first year's worth of titles are all pressed at United. I looked through a handful of what I had (Art Blakey's Birdland Vol & 2/Mile Davis Vol. 1) are all done at United. My Donald Byrd albums (A New Perspective & At The Half Note) were done by RTI. The I with the S inside denotes the cutting engineer which is Ian Sefchick. Hope this helps. The ones that are done at RTI were mastered by Bernie Grundman (or Chris Bellman) supposedly from the master tapes. The United ones cut by Ian Sefchick are coming from Alan Yoshida digital masters. I do agree it would be good to have a breakdown of each title as to who did it. 2.) I don't have any of the Connoisseur Series at all but would love to see which is better. 3.) I guess I am not surprised with some of the tapes dying. Song For My Father is one of the more popular titles so I am sure that tape was used quite a bit. Thanks for the great comments.

Thanks for the follow up, and great info. How would you rate the quality of your RTI BN 75's? To be kind, my one title, The Real McCoy, is not good... But my handful of Connoisseur Series titles are very good. Unless there is a marked up-tick in quality of RTI BN 75's over the United stuff, I'll probably just forget about the whole thing and focus on Conn Series, the better 70's blue label's, the BN 2-fer "Reissue Series" (prices inching up, but still seem to remain secret gems), and of course as many earlier pressings as can be picked up at reasonable prices. Ron R @ MM Jazz also noted that after this last batch of titles come out, that will be that! And, that it will be a veritable "Murderer's Row" of titles.... All the best

So the Bernie Grundman ones have been outstanding. The United ones are good but the vinyl pressings make it a bit of a gamble. I have a few of the Alan Yoshida mastered Blue Note Hi-Res CDs and they are quite impressive but they can be expensive so the United LPs are a cheaper alternative. As for the Real McCoy is there a reason you didn't go for the Music Matters version? It's really quite outstanding. Glad you got some intel from Ron on the titles. I e-mailed Lori on this and didn't get a response. It's been over six months since their last release and I was fearful they were done.

Re MM Jazz, knowing what we know, I'll be diligent in accumulating the last batch of releases. Its not that I passed on the MMJ release of The Real McCoy, its just that its hard to keep up and with 4 kids, etc., not always easy to justify these investments. In the end, I'm ok if I miss stuff, but do like to make educated choices. The way I see it, United pressed BN 75s are not able to compete in the marketplace against great sounding alternatives like Connoisseur Series, Heavenly Sweetness pressings, or 70's blue label versions, all of which seem to be available in the same price range. Hoping to track down a BG/RTI BN 75 for reference, before passing on them altogether. At $30 (+/-) one is able to pick up BN NY & Liberty Stereo pressings, which sound great to me, especially for early to mid- 60's sessions. London Jazz Collector maintains these are passed upon by purists and cognoscenti due to the perception that Mono is the true BN sound. I think its nuts that when RVG recorded a session in stereo, that these purists still want the mono-fold-down! Fine with me, Ill scoop up the stereo's for them ;) If any of this conjecture sounds funny, please advise. The smarter we get, the better... All the best

I hear you with the kids completely. Anyway, I think what you're asking for is interesting. There are a couple of items I was thinking of picking up just for a curiosity on sound comparison. If I ever pull the trigger on it, I might try and post an A/B comparison on RU-vid. I think the Blue Note stuff will just get an ad slapped over it by RU-vid and not completely blocked. I like the London Jazz Collector but I don't always agree with him. In the end, you got to listen to your own ears and go with what you like. When Rudy went to recording in stereo, that's what I went after as well. I like Mono when it was really recorded that way.
