The full, unedited source audio for this crazy old dark ride is finally available to the public! All credit goes to Tim Hollis for providing me with every single track heard in this video. This guy's preservation efforts are legendary, so if you ever decide to use this audio for any purpose, please credit Tim and not me. Despite this video's fair share of inaccuracies and borderline-crude quality, I hope you enjoy the content as much as I do!
If you're unfamiliar with this fairly obscure ride, you should read this useful article: dafe.org/articles/darkrides/o...
You can also download the audio tracks heard in the video as individual files, as well as four live audio recordings of the full ride from 1972 (also courtesy of Tim Hollis), right here: jumpshare.com/b/tKtsxCF8ohmQZ...

Okee68 I have a question about the sound track and ride that I'm really curious about. I'm a huge fan of the Krofft brothers TV Shows (H.R Pufnstuf and Lidsville are my absolute favorites). I know that Sid and Marty Krofft designed the sets and animatronics for the ride, and I was wondering if they wrote the music for it as well. What makes me think that they did is because the theme songs for each series explains the plot of the show, with each theme song generally running about a minute and a half to two minutes long and they go into great detail about the back story of what the show is about. What makes me really curious as to if the wrote it is the fact that the opening song sounds like it could easily be a theme song to one of their shows since it follows their formula of laying out the plot line of the story. Do you happen to know if they wrote the songs? I am really curious.
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 5 лет назад
Oh man, you just happened to choose exactly the _wrong_ song to use as an example, I'm afraid! While Sid and Marty Krofft _were_ responsible for retrofitting the ride with new animated figures, scenes, and audio in 1968, the queue song itself is actually a remnant of the original _1967_ version of the attraction, which they had no involvement with. The rest of the music you hear in the video was undoubtedly written by the Kroffts, though. It even fits in more with their use of contemporary musical styles, as opposed to the traditional Dixieland motif and less "experimental" tone of the queue song. Very clever observation, though. I had never even thought of the queue song that way until your post.

It's scary how close this could have come to being lost media. Infinite thanks to Tim for requesting these tracks and to the employee who gave them to him so future generations can enjoy them. The queue song is especially charming, so it would have been a real shame if the only copies of it had all been scrapped decades ago, which could have easily happened in any other timeline where Tim either didn't exist, didn't have the passion or courage to ask or the employee had simply said, "nah." Tim also deserves thanks for choosing the share these instead of keeping them locked up in a cupboard for his ears only like so many collectors choose to do.

The recent Defunctland episode is actually what re-ignited my interest in obtaining the ride's source audio to begin with. I've known about Tales of the Okefenokee since late 2017, and over the course of the following year I made several unsuccessful attempts at contacting certain people online who I thought may have had access to the source audio. The moment I heard snippets of the source audio used in the new episode of Defunctland, however, I realized that it was probably easier to get a hold of than I had previously thought. After a few days of searching for Tim Hollis's email, I finally got into contact with him and the rest is history. I still can't believe it took nearly two decades for someone to permanently upload the audio online, though. I guess that's just how it sometimes goes with media as obscure as this.

However, one rumor about the attraction simply isn’t true, all of the figures weren’t destroyed right after closure. Me and a couple of my other work buddies saved some of the figures and took them home to commemorate surviving working on the attraction, still got the figures lying around in my storage locker. The fact that the master copy of the crow’s warning was lost and we STILL somehow have a copy, albeit a poorer quality one, is a testament to how insanely miraculous it is that we have so much of this ride documented at all. @okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 5 лет назад
Yeah, there was definitely some real effort that went into the creation of this ride's soundtrack. I think the music and songs being as enjoyable and well-made as they are were half the battle when it came to the overall quality of the attraction. If you actually end up making a graphic novel based on Tales of the Okefenokee at some point, using the Lozzi illustrations as references is definitely a smart move - those drawings, of course, are what the animated figures in the ride were based on to begin with. I think the most notable difference between the illustrations and the actual figures would have to be the shape of the rabbits' heads. In the illustrations, they're flared out on the sides, whereas the heads of the animated figures were basically just giant spoons. Anyway, if you don't get around to doing a graphic novel, I would love to see some Okefenokee art from you regardless! There's practically no fan art for the attraction online, and I'm always eager to see any type of new content related to it.

Okee68 Funny you mention that, with Easter being around the corner, I was planning on doing some Okefenokee fanart (which would also help me get better at the art style I’m going for). I’ve started practicing drawing the art style from those illustrations as reference. Actually the graphic novel I’m planning out is an anthology story of sorts that pays subtle homage to some of the more interesting obscure dark rides of the past. Of course the main two inspirations toward it are the Okefenokee ride and the old Bear-y Tales at Knott’s Berry Farm. I’ll hopefully show off some concept art for my ideas in the near future.

Was probably about 3 the last time I rode this. Thank you for bringing back some of these visuals and sounds. Nothing really triggered any more memories. The scenes look absolutely ratty and poorly done. Which is not a huge surprise, given some of the design expectations of the time. However, I had no idea how rich and developed the music and audio elements are! Some great 60's jams in there. Again, still dissapointed that none of the music brought back any memories though. Thanks, my guy! I'm always glad to hear that my videos are doing their job. I have a mostly-accurate audio mix coupled with professionally-filmed footage on my channel as well, so maybe that can unlock your memories even more so than this video. The scenes were actually put together very well by non-Disney standards circa 1968, but a lot of those old, grainy photographs don't exactly do them justice. That footage presents a much more "correct" vision of what the ride was actually like. "Double-pan dowdy" is actually "apple pandowdy", by the way. I honestly have no idea how I managed to internally mangle that line so consistently for over a year prior to creating this video, but the first comment I ever received here was actually a correction of that weird little bit.

That much it is. It's a proper miracle that any of this audio managed to survive, let alone every last track. @okefenokee_rabbit 5 лет назад
Yeah, I'm the one who adds and manages the files in the download links; all of the black-and-white photos you see in the "Rare Photos" folder (aside from the Monster Plantation construction photo) come from Tim Hollis's book on Six Flags Over Georgia, which unfortunately features only greyscale versions of photographs which were originally shot in color. I _am_ looking into tracking down the sources for the Okefenokee photos from the book (which are all credited) and seeing if I can find the original color prints, though. I'm also currently working on making a better version of this video that fixes any mistakes I may have made and includes better pictures, text, and editing. I'll be sure to include that photo of the Crow Quartet among a slew of other new pictures, of course. I can't see this project being finished for quite some time though, because I don't think that kind of "update" is really worth attempting until I've come across enough new photos to make a considerable difference in the content of the video. Also, if you were wondering how exactly I was able to determine that the black-and-white picture of the Crow Quartet in question was indeed a shot of their second appearance, the answer lies within the set and props surrounding them, which don't match those of either the crows' appearance in the opening scene (in which the crows were positioned on a rocky surface) or their appearance at the end of the ride (in which they were positioned on a fallen branch in front of a large tree).

I would say it's certainly in the upper tier of attraction soundtracks, beating out those of all five Fantasyland dark rides by a pretty significant margin. I would also say it's superior to it's a small world, and about on par with Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, and Knott's Bear-y Tales. I'm struggling to compare it with The Cave, though, as even though nearly all of the songs used in that ride were nothing more than edited cuts of pre-existing pieces, the surrealism of it alone made it one of the most mysterious and dream-like attractions out there.

@okefenokee_rabbit 3 года назад
Nobody's asked this yet, actually. I really have no idea what the whole story behind the low-quality version of crows' warning song is. If I recall correctly, Tim Hollis simply labeled the track as a "second-generation copy" when he sent me all the audio files two years ago, and didn't go into any further detail. Your guess as to how we ended up with this copy of the song is as good as mine, although I don't think it's an actual recording of the song as it played in the ride, because you would definitely be able to hear some level of reverb if it were, assuming it would have been captured by an employee during an off period while all the other audio was turned off.

I have a theory that someone owns footage of the 68 version and it’s in full.But before I tell the theory I am going to tell you to not take this for granted as it could be very wrong but with this said let’s get started.So just a few minutes ago I was trying to find out even more stuff about this ride and then I stumbled across an old SFOG message board and one of the discussions was about the Tales of the Okefenokee ride footage that surfaced keep in mind that the discussion was created 5 years ago.Then someone said that they own the documentary the footage was from and it was called Six Flags Over Georgia The Early Years.Now here is where the theory comes into play.I actually think Lain’s video was a preview of the Tales of the Okefenokee footage in that documentary this would mean that the full thing is in the documentary.The reason for this is quite simple.So this video is basically a Movie Trailer as in movie trailers give away some stuff but not the whole film.This the same for this video that would explain so many zoomed in camera shots in the video and this would also explain the weird music edited in.So I think he took the full ride footage from the documentary and edited it a ton including zoomed in camera shots,mixing up the scene order,replacing the music, and the removal of a ton of scenes from the footage.Then it was finally uploaded to RU-vid.So someone has it in full.So there is my theory!

The only things available on the internet related to the '67 version seem to be Lain Shakespeare's video, the queue song, a tiny handful of pictures (all of which you've probably seen already), and anything Tim Hollis has written or said about it. The reason the ride received a complete overhaul only a year after the park opened seems to be, according to Tim Hollis in his recent podcast with Kevin Perjurer, because of how ashamed of it SFoG was after it wasn't received well. As far as the animatronics go, I doubt a single one of them ending up surviving the revamp of '68, unfortunately. Considering how eager SFoG seemed to be in regards to totally erasing the original version of the attraction from existence, it's extremely unlikely that any sort of preservation attempt was made among anyone involved.

It's entirely possible that a silent 8mm or 16mm recording could exist, or even a very early video recording with sound from 1979 or 1980.

Nothin' weird about being interested in old amusement park attractions. I think they serve as both a unique look into the past and as a novelty in creative set design and storytelling. I'm not sure what about Tales of the Okefenokee in particular is so attractive to me, though. I guess it's just kind of a cute ride with a well-made soundtrack, as well as a parcel of weird sixties charm and an aspect of mystery regarding all of the little, specific things about it that most of us aren't able to know. In any sense, my goal with these videos is simply to preserve it to some extent.

I haven't come across any photos of it, but you can vaguely make it out in the 1971 sample reel when the boat is moving through the storm scene. I don't think you can really see the face, but you can definitely make out some of its gnarled shape as a flash of lightning illuminates the scene.

why did they choose to keep the Gene Patrick designs of Mr bear and Mr rabbit and never update them for the entirety of the rides life. Also why wasnt the soundtrack or queue song ever updated.

I have a question why in 1971 and maybe 2 why is ms rabbit Blue if mr rabbit is blue?
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 4 года назад
The fur of the animated figures deteriorated at an excessive rate due to the humidity that accumulated inside of the ride building, and many of them had their fur replaced at least once, usually without regard as to what color the fur of the figure in question was "supposed" to be. That's why the Mr. Rabbit figures bore four different fur colors at one point.

What’s the weird blackness behind the puppet rabbits/behind the background behind them, is it the entrance to the arsenal scene?
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 3 года назад
If you're referring to that bit of the sample reel that shows the puppet show as viewed from the ghost scene, then I don't think you would have been able to see the entrance to the cave at all from that angle. I'm pretty sure there was just a plywood set wall behind the puppeteer rabbits. Otherwise, you would have been able to see the crows too early, and the puppet show music and crows' warning song would have overlapped too much with each other due to there being no separation.

Is the que footage that’s labeled Tim Capsule by Tim Hollis?
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 4 года назад
Tim Hollis never captured any footage of the ride; that tiny clip of the queue in the rare images folder comes from a home movie filmed around 1970 that a SFOG memorabilia collector uploaded to Flickr. Tim Hollis would have only been six or seven years old at the time, so not exactly at a prime age to be handling a film camera.

@okefenokee_rabbit

I've never seen any actual evidence suggesting that were any rabbits to the right of the cow. I think Tim Hollis was simply misremembering the scene way back when he made that floor plan.

Were these perhaps from tape? I've heard some of the distortions like the ones in the queue song from a dirty head or tape, and the drown out on a tape slipping and misaligning from the head
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 2 месяца назад
To my knowledge, all of the audio tracks here (except for the crows' second song) are digitized versions of direct copies of the original, untrimmed master reels. While I didn't include this in the video, each audio file, as sent to me by Tim Hollis, still had a brief reading of the reel's title by Marty Krofft at the beginning such that copies could be properly identified before being fed into the ride. I don't know what the reasons for all the little imperfections are, however.

Catchy songs, what is the style these are in?
@okefenokee_rabbit
@okefenokee_rabbit 5 лет назад
I wouldn't say most of them were done in any particular style (aside from the queue song having a Dixieland motif and the "Okefenokee Waltz" being, of course, a waltz), but plenty of televised cartoons of the era feature very similar music, though the soundtrack for Tales of the Okefenokee was obviously a lot more elaborate in at least a few places than your typical animated Sat-AM fare.

In the latest okefenokee images (Jack Lynch) why does it appear a big gab between the carrots or is it just unclear? And was the images taken back in 1968?
@okefenokee_rabbit

Those photos were taken in 1975, I think, and you can see how about half of the twelve carrots had already been removed by that point. It's just the middle six, which are flanked on both sides by ferns and shrubs.
