In this video I review a clip of US forces taking sniper fire from a nearby ridge. The Taliban played a stupid game and won stupid prizes...

I was in a firefight in Iraq. Iraqi civilians were just walking around like nobody was getting grenades thrown at them, or shot at. It was surreal. It became normal after a couple of weeks. Just like explosions. After 5 days in the Invasion, explosions in the distance were normal. March-May 2003 was a crazy time. Watching an MLRS battery launch at night was pretty awesome and scary at the same time. Glad they were on our side.

I was flying sorties out of a Charlie Delta air base in Northern Saudi Arabia. I had a morning I will never forget just after lifting off for a sortie we got shot at from some place on take off. My wing man says hey I think I see him he rolls out does a fast turn and as he's returning low and slow a few hundred feet from the end of the runway all the ordnance from his left wing just comes falling off and as a stroke of luck the shit fell right ontop of the bad guys. The next thing that happened since the stuff loosed itself and technically it wasn't armed by the pilot it was a total accident it was like a delayed reaction the stuff hit the ground we even saw a bomb bounce like a ball and then it all went up like 20 seconds later. I heard the Lt behind me say WTF was that. All I could think of saying was it was a screw up that went really well. When the pilot landed we found out the sniper had hit the pylon more than once where the ordnance had been and that was the reasons the stuff loosed itself. It was a matter of the attitude of the plane and maybe even the really slow speed is why it all came off at once. The guys at HQ said they never saw a near tragic accident turn out for the better like that one.

Airsoft and Paintball. Sometimes these guys have been known to beat SOF troops because they are willing to take chances. Why? Well, paintballs and bbs don't kill, they also travel a lot slower than LIVE ROUNDS. The SOF guys are used to the real stuff and unless they've played around with the toys they often default to their conditioning/programming and can be quite reserved when it comes to taking chances.

A slightly improved version, the M1921A1, was introduced in 1930 with all of the M1921s being upgraded. The gun weighed 79 lb (36 kg) without water, was 56 in (1.4 m) long, and had a 36-inch (0.91 m) long barrel. The gun was mounted on a pedestal mount with three horizontal legs. It had a 500-650 rounds per minute rate of fire. Development continued and the M1921A1 was replaced by the water-cooled .50-caliber M2 Browning in 1933. Ground and aircraft air-cooled versions of the M2 were also adopted in 1934. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1921_Browning_machine_gun The US military had TWO 50 cals before WW2... At the beginning looked like a MATV. The others were MaxPro International MRAPS. I helped install the electronics in these vehicles for 7 years. The remote weapon system is very cool. Some also had a microphone system called the boomerang system, integrated with the remote weapon system, that would triangulate the sound of the shot. We would put it in auto mode and walk around the vehicle blowing a whistle to see if the system would zero in on us (without the weapon of course). I love seeing my trucks in action.

Mike your videos could be the saving grace those from the military need to get over PTSD and live a normal life again. Lt Col Grossman states in his books that in WWll the soldiers got to come home on slow boats with others who had same experiences and could mentally deprogram (can't think of the right word) before getting home. Todays soldiers are pinned down in the morning and flown home the same day having a"normal" dinner with their family. Reality gets warped. The human brain cannot compute. Thank you for this. I remember from my orientation with the M113 at Benning in the days before the Bradley how the Soviet 12.7 would easily zip thru both sides of the box without slowing down. The only remedy was to further reduce the square footage of the otherwise cramped interior was with two feet of sandbags stacked up along each wall, and on the floor, and on top. Then it made the machine more bullet resistant. The up-armored humvees and stuff were long after my time, but those 50s on either side can be pretty destructive.

We rolled into Iraq with soft-skin HMMWV's with the doors taken off. That was 2003-04. Not long after we got there, the mechanics started fabbing sheet metal doors for us and throwing those on there, which worked okay at the time. Big Bob's Truck Stop on LSA Anaconda started installing the FDE Armor kits in 2004-05. Units drove their wheeled vehicles in from all over Iraq to drop them off and piddle around an airbase for a few days while it was all being installed. The new M1151's in 2006 came with armor from the plant. I was lucky enough to get to pop one of their cherries as a gunner. Tough truck. The footage is from the documentary "The Hornet's Nest." Father and son correspondent team capturing footage of the 101st Airborne in action. The guy talking about gunfire sounding like bees that Mike chuckles at is actually the son. The son seems a little mentally slow and a liability for the team. The combat footage is amazing, especially the 2nd half where a 3-day mission becomes a 9-day with lots of causalities. Even shows some footage that was taken by the Taliban during that mission.

The SA army had good anti mine vehicles back in the 70,s. A bit rock n roll suspension but high survivability. I'm surprised no one took up their Hull design until recently. Well done using a 110 😩 and making it

Armies in the West just didn't seem to see the value of V-hull MRAPs until their experience in Afghanistan. Not surprisingly the South African made RG-31 Nyalas were some of the first MRAPs the US and its allies used over there and it probably served as a good starting point to develop their own versions.
