I live in British Columbia. A few years back, you would look up into the hills and they would be a burning red colour from all the dying trees. Now you look up and the hills are grey from all the dead trees. This episode was really close to home for me.

yup i used to work in prince george in the forestry industry, not any more, i now work in oil. but blaming it all on climate is not true, canfor is equally to blame here and their mono forests. other companies may have had mono forests as well, but im not familiar with their operations.

I admire Diana's amazing amount of obvious passion she has for her job. I *love* how much she is very clearly in love with insects. It's absolutely refreshing to see someone so unapologetically in love with their interests.

I grew up in Montana in the 80s and every year when I go back it makes me sick to see the damage the pine beetles are doing to the forests. It literally me watching my childhood memories wither and die.

One of the things I love about this show is that when it comes to living things that have a prejudice (they're gross, creepy, useless, etc.) when they come on or you discuss them, it's not just "they're gross, end of story," it's "I find them gross, what do they do, will it kill me, CAN I TOUCH IT!?" Much more interesting to watch, & a great learning opportunity.

We have similar problems with the Emerald Ash Borer in the northern Midwest and East. Pretty much all of the ash is gone here in Ohio and wherever these beetles have become established the ash trees have been wiped out.

@AtticusAmericanus
@AtticusAmericanus 10 лет назад
Cockroach diplomacy must be difficult. All it takes is one wrong hiss to tell the tree that you are negotiating a treaty with (after they launched a chemical attack against innocent bugs) that you want to have sex with them. That would be incredibly #awkward .

Another fun fact about cockroaches: If you approach them with a vaccum cleaner from behind they turn around and run into the vaccum cleaner! XD That's because they interprete the air moving from their front to their back as an animal breathing on them. They think there is a predator in front of them so they turn around and run. But I don't know if this is true for all roaches...

My son's 3rd grade class had an insect demonstration last year and they asked for parents to volunteer as insect wranglers. I got to handle a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. They look pretty scary from the top but if you tip them up and look under that impressive carapace, they have cute little black faces and a very modest, retiring posture.

Quite a lot of variation in cockroaches. I live in Australia and the cockroaches that occasionally show up in my house (and promptly get returned to the garden) are little elliptical black ones about the size of a ten-cent coin.
