Your Dad was great and underrated. His CBS Late Late Show is particularly great TV (and also criminally underrated). I could watch Tom Snyder talk about mundane things for hours. He’s that interesting and had that special broadcasting gift to connect with the viewer. I’m from the Midwest too, and I appreciate his old school Midwest style... but he also had that punk honesty that attracted a lot of the great weirdos from the 70s cutting edge. Do you think he would have gotten a kick out of the podcast scene? Haha. I think he has an influence there. Cool to see your name pop up!

Tom Snyder was in a League of his own. He could hang with the best, or bring out the best from the less than great. In the process, Mr. Snyder became a Legend, an Icon, and someone who inspired future Broadcasters.
@ryanellis4474
@ryanellis4474 8 месяцев назад
@@FredLord-sp4ym - AMEN, M'Lord! I try to interview interesting people as often as I can, and Snyder is a HUGE inspiration (not that I can imitate him well… [he had CHARM {and much else} that I lack]). I just interviewed one person running for sheriff in my county, and I am soon going to interview his opponent. I also hope eventually to re-interview a Grammy-nominated sound engineer pal of mine, who worked with artists you would know, so there is a little variety in subjects (I get these sit downs and shoot them myself). I am TRYING to get an old goombah I know to share mob tales on camera, but they are too scared at the moment… I like that word you used ("broadcaster"). It seems the age of the broadcaster died out a couple, few generations ago. I want it revived, but our culture would have to revert to what it was (or even go further with the earlier, better direction). Snyder carried with him his culture, and the monoculture brought on by the digital age might lessen the occurrence of future Snyder-types (if his mold was not already destroyed).

Little did Snyder know at that time how much more news programs and entire news channels would expand, demanding a tremendous amount of content. That eventual 24/hour news cycle has only hurt us as the demand has resulted in a massive amount of garbage filling the airwaves, not to mention a reckless need to be first, which threatens accuracy.

After watching much of this collection (Thanks, Don), I have concluded that Dave seemed to really like and respect Tom. Oh man, that first segment really took me back...Whenever I see Snyder clips from that period my mind superimposes Dan Ackroyd's impression of him from SNL a bit...One of things I loved about Tom was that you could love him and also laugh at impressions like Dan's and have good reasons for both responses. I agree with Dave, at that time of night, Tom had the perfect voice, format and length of show...at least for that time in history. The set, the cigarette smoke, the lighting, the lack of audience...he would get things out of people that other shows did not. I also really enjoyed the sincerely kind words he said about Dave and Dave's response too, wow, he really looked taken aback, genuinely moved. I know he's always been uncomfortable with praise, but this was the most clearly emotionally uncomfortable I've seen him be. I think his skin got a little thicker after this. Off to a great start with another great compilation.

Trivia factoid#1: Tom Snyder was an actor in one episode on the Rifleman TV Western in the early 1960's. #2=Al Michaels, the sportscaster was an actor on HAWAII-50 in the early '70's playing a lawyer for one episode. I am trying to think of other legendary mic. folks, who played people other than themselves, but at my age, I am drawing a blank. Most of the super mic'sters played themselves. I am sure there are others. I just can't think of any more. Oh..#3=LETTERMAN played a part in Mork and Mindy..a self-help life philosophy guru, and did a movie CABIN BOY as a Monkey puppet salesman, lol. #4 Jack Paar also did some acting, actually playing MARILYN MONROE'S boyfriend in a movie in the fifties. #5=Steve Allen with the lead role played Benny Goodman in a biopic movie of GOODMAN in those fifties.. There are probably others, but I cannot think of them right now. Observation: I really believe a total access approach to TV talk shows, the host ripping down the "4th wall" =talking to the audience about the technical personnel= behind the camera people like stage managers, producers, directors, etc, began with Arthur Godfrey(a little more formal than the others but groundbreaking), Paar, and Carson, with Tom Snyder taking it to the next level..all before Letterman kept it up. Communicating by talking TO people instead of AT them..my personal way to work when I was in broadcasting...that made these folks GIANTS! In my opinion..THESE WERE THE BEST OF THE 1950-2015 ERA. Their longevity, and national and world fame proved that.
