I really felt the need to share...where I am at with my thoughts on this topic. And of course, a little timelapse video of me, drawing hands to accompany the talk.

What is your opinion on AI Art?

The tool has become the Master. "Human" no longer matters in the context wherein a situation where the homogenization of concept and execution of concept is bypassed through an external filter that creates its own reality. Cars park themselves, houses monitor themselves as organisms, all of our devices are listening in on our most private conversations, cameras constantly monitor our faces... We have willingly made ourselves cheap and obsolete. Art like Music is over, and we have no one to blame but ourselves.

I have similar thoughts about this topic. But I am sure that it’s not just a trend. AI will lead us to a technical revolution in many fields. On the one hand I see a lot of good things about it. For example a lot of medical breakthroughs and the possibility to speed up many processes. On the other hand there are a lot of sorrows. Anyways you have to deal with the future somehow. AI development won’t simpy cease because we are afraid. I am a software developer and if I don’t get familiar with AI tools my work will never be competitive. Maybe it will be the same for artists. But people are creative and have a lot of passion. There will always be a place for creative work and jobs. We just have to be open minded :) Also I think a change in the economy is necessary. As with every new technology a lot of jobs will be lost. It’s not an option that most of the people get unemployed and don’t have money to keep the system going. Maybe a solution would be the implementation of a basic income or similar. Then maybe the private funding of kickstarter projects will be even more successful and we have more time to do things we really like. All in all, I am curious to see what the future holds.

I don't necessarily hate the concept of AI art. What really is worrisome is the AI bros behind it. It's still a man made tool and people are pushing it. The rhetoric of tech bros is just the same as with NFTs/Crypto: "This new Tech in democratizing art, it is helping, don't insinst on better laws protecting visual art because it will just benefit corpos!" The thing is: it is already only benefitting corporations. On the other hand I love GPT3 and ChatGPT, this thing really takes off some boring cumbersome workload when coding, writing reports and essays... I'm not sure if it will be the same with Art tho as with tech and knowledge work tho. What AI won't be able to do (most probably) is solve individual art problems like for example someone wants an exact character design. I've experimented with it a bit and used it for idea/composition finding assisting drawn-from-scratch images, was pretty cool spin on photobashing. But I stopped as soon as I learned how the data is scraped. I mean, with music AI they are sp focused on not using any licenced music to feed it, but with pictures... lol why? Also about the law thing... It is still possible to become an indie musician nowadays, see the phonk subculture... It's also pretty bothersome that the internet might have inflicted so much ADHD on people that hardly any clickerby notices the glaring logical flaws in AI images. (Way too many teeth, fingers, eldritch abomination bodies...)

I guess the flaws in Ai images might even be able to be trained away with time. Currently, yes, it sometimes is weird, how people praise certain AI generated Art and I'm just there asking myself "did you even look at this right? Are you so flashed by the lighting and rendering, that you can't see the anatomical flaws?"...etc. (I mean, I do them to in my art, but nobody praises me for the mistakes XD so I that motivates me to do better) I have one friend with whom I've talked about this topic, because she uses AI for her art process, or at least is playing around with it ( I think stable diffusion only), and she is the first one where I got a feeling of..."oh yeah, this is how you can make something really, artistic with it. So it CAN actually be a good tool?" But this doesn't solve the whole ethical or copyright problem. Her solution so far is, avoiding using specific prompts like "in the style of....." (because "in the style of" seems the worst to me...and many other artists) and be original with her promting, trying not to imitate, but create....and she's just using it as a part of the process, not as a stand alone. But she believes in it's future and is more for "using it and try to solve the obvious problem" somehow. The question remains... is this possible or naive wish-thinking? For me, the cons still overweigh the positive possibilities.

I don't think it's the technology advancing, it is the AI's indiscriminate taking of art created by others to make its own images. This goes beyond just seeing art and being inspired, this is taking what someone has created and molding it into something to call your own. I can see the advantage of AI as a reference, especially in rendering difficult poses but to use, copy, and reformat work created by another is not inspiration, it is theft.

I agree with you that it is a huge copyright infringement (or theft as you say) if the artists have no say in this, which is mostly the case currently and should not be tolerated. I mean, why did ArtStation and DeviantArt started with an automatic „opt-in“ option in the first place? It should be automatic „opt-out“ until the artist explicitly says he wants to offer his image for AI ART services. But that was and is not the case sadly.
