If you really want to blow your mind react to clips from "Stop making sense". Arguably the greatest concert film of all time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s3A5CKkbH1o.html
Weird Video, but lots of videos were like this. This is at the beginning of the MTV Age, or as I call the 3rd British Invasion. When MTV first started off, the station brought in tons of British music via video. England at the time was the only major game in town producing music videos. Eventually, American bands began making music videos beyond live concert clips, but making videos were expensive and MTV hasn't proven themselves as a reliable moneymaker, especially when record sales were down. So, record companies produced CHEAP and experimental videos to get on the MTV market. What you are witnessing is the American counter-attack to the deluge of Britsh music. From 1980 - 1983 MTV would show some of the weirdest, cheapest music videos ever. I would pair this video with Herbie Handcock's "Rockit" (The Breakdancer's Holy Grail) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GHhD4PD75zY.html --Professor Thursday
Very inventive. Only, Talking Heads were just David Byrne's first band. He's had a few amazing ones since-- including the new fantastic American Utopia band ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Utf8CldTtIY.html

@@leesvideopage Only, Talking Heads weren't only David.
And she was is about his friend in high school who use d to skip classes sit by the chocolate YooHoo factory and drop acid. Once I heard David explain that at a show, it made me see those lyrics in a totally different way! And she was lying in the grass And she could hear the highway breathing And she could see a nearby factory She's making sure she is not dreaming See the lights of a neighbor's house Now she's starting to rise Take a minute to concentrate And she opens up her eyes The world was moving she was right there with it and she was The world was moving she was floating above it and she was And she was And she was drifting through the backyard And she was taking off her dress And she was moving very slowly Rising up above the earth Moving into the universe and she's Drifting this way and that Not touching the ground at all and she's Up above the yard The world was moving, she was right there with it and she was (Hey, hey) The world was moving, she was floating above it and she was (Hey, hey, hey) She was proud about it, no doubt about it She isn't sure about what she's done No time to think about what to tell him No time to think about what she's done and she was (Hey hey, hey hey, hey) And she was looking at herself And things were looking like a movie She had a pleasant elevation She's moving out in all directions oh, oh oh
Ahead of their time. Iconoclastic is a good way to describe them. In fact, they were ahead of MY time, as I was too young to appreciate their music in the early 80s.
and then after that, watch american utopia tour/broadway show - i think a version coming to hbo this month! - it is definitely a continuation from the doc show.
Jamel you would be the coolest neighbor to live next to. I could imagine bringing a lunch over on a Saturday, and just sharing music back and forth. The world needs more solid people like you.
@@DougWinfield I'm getting sick of people saying David has a huge ego, I have watched pretty much every interview with him, seen every recorded performace, and I have seen no evidence of an ego whatsoever...
Jamel, speaking of the funk connection, drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth had a side project called Tom Tom Club, if you listen to their song "Genius of Love" I guarantee you will recognize it!
The coolest thing ever would be if you did the whole Talking Heads movie concert "Stop Making Sense". You could break them up individually if you wanted. I bet you'd love the music, *and* the performance. It's amazing!
Love "Stop Making Sense"! A real gem of a concert movie. Nicely concieved and executed and fun! Did I mention great music. Watch it in it's entirety for your own pleasure.
I'm a child of the 80s and this is my favorite Talking Heads song. So much so that it was played at my wedding reception. A great friend of mine and I danced to this. Wild, Wild Life is also a great song by them. An unknown (at that time) John Goodman is in the video. Die-Hard Walking Dead, too! I've seen every episode at least once.
Peter, I saw it on Broadway last December and it was the best, most engaging show I've seen. I had tickets to take my kids last month, but it's being rescheduled. You're right, there are lots of Talking Heads songs which I prefer over his solo work.
Saw the concert when they toured in 1984 (one of 4 times i saw them in concert). It was the most exciting concert performance I've ever seen. And then, the movie came out so I could relive it in eternity!
If I am not mistaken, this song was composed by the band by having the members write down pithy sayings of one or two sentences. They then took all of them threw them in a hat and pulled them out in no particular order and concocted this stream-of-consciousness lyric.
Yea,that was the basic concept for the entire "Speaking In Tongues" album. They illustrated this on the tour by having screens set up behind the band during "Making Flippy Floppy" and having 3 words appear on 3 different screens. Some kinda matched up,others not as much. Very few bands pushed as hard to recreate themselves from record to record and always strive for something totally original as much as Talking Heads did. One of my absolute favorite bands ever.
I love how it never feels like I'm watching some guy do RU-vid video. It always feels like I'm just listening to music with a friend. I appreciate this channel
This is one of the first videos i can remember from being a kid. I can remember coming home from 1st grade in 83 and my grandma going youll never guess what we got. She sat me in front of the tv and turned on MTV! This is one of the ones I remember fondly from that time, one of my favorites.
I always looked at David Byrne as artist playing a rock star. He is so talented that managed to pulled it off. So talented that in his collection of awards are an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Grammy and in the Rock And Roll HOF. Knew many who were turned off by the group’s videos during the influential MTV days.Simply thought they were to weird. But were so good that they pulled it off. Also check out their concert film “ Stop Making Sense” . One of the greatest concert films ever made.
All their tracks are amazing, and they all sound and look better in the live “Stop Making Sense” version. There’s so much more energy and more band members to add layers and funk. Please check it out. You will love it.
Thank you so much for posting, I enjoyed your reactions/commentary, I did not know the background you researched. The Talking Heads were probably my favorite band of the 80s and this has held up so well, I just love it. They were so ingenious in striking a balance between interesting art and innovative music and yet keeping enough humor and fun to avoid being pretentious. That kid crawling all over David Byrne!
"This must be the place (Naive Melody)" is another great tune. Not a banger but an awesome tune. Now if you could guess the popular movie it was played in. "The Swamp" is another great tune that was in another hit movie back in the day. You have maybe heard these songs before by the talking heads. Now if you check out "Moon Rocks"? Play it at a party and if the people don't move their feet and start bopping around?..... You need new friends.
This must be the place... Such a beautiful song. It has its own cult following. Also somewhat recent is a sean penn movie with the same name and features this song.
@@4oldshep okay but was thinking of a different flick. It’s the song at the end of the movie “ Wall Street”. “ The Swamp” was in the movie Risky Business. “ Ya know Joel Princeton could use a man like you”.
@@ls-toronto7230 If you haven't already, take a listen to Shawn Colvin's cover . Puts a beautiful arrangement to the beautiful lyrics. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-au0hYK517bI.html
"Slippery People" is my favorite track by the Talking Heads. The live version is so much fun and worth watching. The Staple Singers do a good cover of it as well.
As many here have suggested, their concert movie "Stop Making Sense" is a must watch, with the volume way up. The free version on RU-vid is about 4 min 9 sec short of the full runtime of 1:28:06, even tho' it says "Full Concert." Which means it's been sped up a little bit, which would seem to be the case from the sound of David Byrnes voice in the opening. Tina Weymouth on bass is simply superb. There is no doubt you would love the entire concert. Their performances of every song in that movie are definitely the best they have.
Studio: "And She Was," "Wild Wild Life," "(Nothing But) Flowers," "Take Me To the River," "Road to Nowhere" Stop Making Sense: "Girlfriend Is Better," "Life During Wartime," "Psycho Killer" (yes, again, trust me on this one), "What a Day That Was" I have a decently vivid memory of catching this video on TV before school at my grandma's house when I was like... in kindergarten.
There is a concert movie from talking heads called “stop making sense” greatest music movie ever and worth a look at how their concerts work. They build the set as they go from song to song!
Jamel _AKA_Jamal, you kind sir, are a ROCK STAR! When I find myself getting overwhelmed I watch a video of yours, preferably from the Grateful Dead! I'm not sure if you are as amazing in person as you are on this channel, but you sure seem to be sir. What a joy it is to experience music with you sir! Thanks a million.
In 1983 my friends wanted to take me sailing for my 21st birthday but I said no because I had tickets to see The Talking Heads, which I had seen twice before but each time was a different experience. They are phenomenal!
I forgot this song, then one night I was watching the last episode of Preacher showing him disappearing down the road, then the road to nowhere came on, it was a classic finish with that song.
This Must Be the Place aka The Naive Melody is my all-time favorite song. I have listened to it for at least 2 decades at least once a week and have never grown tired of it.
Speaking in Tongues in my opinion is the pinnacle of the Heads. Moon Rocks is an excellent tune you are 100% correct and an absolute under played jewel on this album. Kudos for showing it some love.
@@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio the whole groove of the song ..... I really don’t know what you would classify it as? Rock-Afro-Disco-Funk? All I know is it has always been a party favorite.
I am a long time audiophile & grew up on the songs you play. I love it so much when you see a talent & comment on it with the same appreciation that I felt when I heard it the first time. Rock on.
Their live concert “Stop Making Sense” is one of the all-time greatest concerts ever recorded. It’s even directed by academy award winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). The live version of the songs (to me) are preferred to the original recordings, especially since they are mastered.
I'm glad you did this song because it's a classic funk song. I have a funny story with this song that I'd like to share that's connected to this story. Some friends of mine and I went to a New Year's Eve party at a local bar where they had alternative performances going on throughout the night. Well one of them was doing a bit of poi spinning with mop heads... that were on fire. He of course went through the routine about how "safe" it was and that "they won't fall apart or fly into the crowd", etc. Fast forward to his performance toward the later part of the evening. Dude starts routine to which my friends and I moved closer to the stage to get a better look at the other fire things he was doing. When the flaming mop heads were being prepared, we moved back from the stage. He comes front and center, starts moving them around which burning bits of mop were falling off and it broke off mid spin to fly out and landed where I had been standing moments just before!! The song playing when that happened was "Burning Down the House"!! 😂 The mop head was extinguished quickly so no fire damage, but it has made this song one that I cannot listen to without laughing because it would've been prevented if the guy had a brain and not used an item that'll burn and break like that.
This is why i subscribe to you! It’s all about the infrastructure of the music, weird facts, oddities that mesh and there is so so much talent left in the dark shadows of the past! Music is past, present, and future combined! I love trivia and music has plenty to pull from! Just groovy!, peace love and butterflies! Keep doing you, keep doing this!
No one's gonna say it, cause they're tripping over the other excellent songs these guys did bit Slippery People is an amazing song. From the Stop Making Sense album. So happy to see you made it here.
@@gordonmacqueen8694 Mavis is a bloody force of nature. I had the privilege of seeing her a few years back, and she delivered. I was exhausted on her behalf.
What Jamel is saying is that he recognizes the song because he heard it in an episode of "The Walking Dead." Like, at the end of Season One (Episode 6) the show concludes with Bob Dylan's masterpiece, "Tomorrow is a Long Time," and many people became familiar with that song because of "The Walking Dead."
@Nature and Physics how the fuck can a music act be better than a television program? Whats next... peanut butter is better than penguins??? 2 totally differt things.
Along with Once In A Lifetime, this video got me connected with Talking Heads growing up in SE Arkansas. So grateful, love these guys! Thanks for the reaction!
So glad to see you enjoy this, it's such a jam!! Obviously there are lots of wonderful great Talking Heads records to explore - but allow me to recommend a later incarnation of David Byrne magic. Brian Eno and David Byrne - Strange Overtones. Chokes me up every time.
Need to check out "Stay Up Late" the production part in the end is really cool. I am a retired stage-hand, so I find it impressive and very cool that they included it as part of the video.
Oh ya, Jamel, I absolutely knew “Burning Down The House” was before “The Roof Us On Fire”. I was in my mid teens when they both hit the airwaves & Mtv. Watching the live shows back then, you absolutely noticed the funk influence on Talking Heads. As soon as the music vid started, and in spite of my headache, I started moving in my chair. 😎
Bands influenced by Talking Heads.. Oingo Boingo XTC Blondie Urban Verbs B-52s R.E.M. They Might Be Giants Camper Van Beethoven This Mortal Coil Beck Phish Arcade Fire St. Vincent Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah Franz Ferdinand Eddie Vedder Foals The Weeknd Primus Bell X1 The 1975 The Ting Tings Nelly Furtado Kesha And of course the Band in my profile pic...Radiohead In fact, the name Radiohead came from a Talking Heads song called “Radio Head”...Members from the band changed their name from “On a Friday” to “Radiohead”
Thanks Jamal!! Another great tune and wonderful reaction!! I was looking through the comments and I didn't see any comments to the interpretation I always thought of when I saw it originally. I'll post here. Whether or not it is about ( as Jamal calls it Booger Sugar ), I tend to agree it has references to ( as Jamal calls it Booger Sugar ). At the end of the video, David's head is floating down the freeway as the white lines go up his nose, one after another, alternating nostrils. Burning down the house to me means someone that threw it all away for that stuff. Food for thought. Thanks again Jamal!!
HAHA the police just came by seems I'm playing my music too loud. They said it was up to me to turn it down. lol I dont always listen to rock n roll but when i do so do my neighbors to steal a quote

Hey man, you and your channel and your videos have been such a bright spot in a real dark and dreary season. I love music, I love that you love music. Keep at it my man, I'll keep watching! Also, I need to snag a "throwbackness" shirt and rep.
You should check out some live performances of the Talking Heads. They have a live movie Stop Making Sense. But there are lots of great performances out there.
