i watched this concert all the way through a few days ago when you started this series and now i want to watch it again it is just so damn good , a totally flawless production.
Outstanding. I think you are ready to go where no react has gone before. Frank Zappa: montana ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DmcYTShN4Fk.html
Al Green's version is tremendous, the fact they can do a great and original version is really impressive. Not easy to cover such a great song and do it well.
@@garyking6519 Following it with "Girlfriend is Better" feels like a light jab, lol. Also, leaving Big Business/I Zimbra on the cutting room floor was at least a misdemeanor.
One of the great things I love about watching this concert is the absolute cohesiveness of that entire group. Nobody is trying out-perform the others. They all are working towards the same goal. It don’t get no better than that.
You should listen to “Movin In Stereo” by the Cars. Great song to be heard over headphones. The Cars were considered new wave and power pop. One could almost say punk in a way. Have more of a proto-punk and bubblegum pop sound. They are their own style. Great band.
This concert is fun to watch, but for this song I prefer Talking Heads studio version. It feels like blasphemy to say, but I think I prefer it to Al’s version. *prepares to duck*
HA! I thought I was the only one that preferred the studio version! The studio version was slower, more soulful, more funky and had a churchy feeling that just made it work! I actually felt like had just gotten baptized!
@@AaronSpielman ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kZx_TokIHdI.html ? to me LG&M is just so timely now... I went home with a waitress the way I always do , how was I to know she was with the Russians, too???
This was the first Talking Heads song I ever heard. 1979, I was a senior in high school. It came over the car radio, and I had to pull over to the side of the road so I could listen to it more closely. I think that may be the only time that ever happened to me.
An explosion of creativity! They are probably the most original group to come out of the CBGB punk scene. I saw them in 1980 and it was just as good as the clip shows. I went to an exhibit of David Byrne's photography and artwork in Massachusetts in the 90s, and he is so talented on so many levels. Love that Tina!
I once watched Stop Making Sense four* times in a row one day in a theater. I was not disappointed. *That is, if I was counting right, to which I wouldn't swear...
Was at THIS CONCERT at The Pantages. Been to hundreds and hundreds of concerts...still the BEST I've ever seen. The band, the show, the audience....ELECTRIC.
I remember reading an interview with Al Green and he seemed amused by the cover and said he might cover some Talking Heads material as well. Don’t think he ever did that, but I wish he had. 😎
As a youngin' I was able to see them on this tour. I was a wallflower until that night, I couldn't help but dance. Thanks for bringing that night back, and putting a smile on my face.
This is amazing example of David Byrne doing what he does best. Always the showman and entertainer. He believes that vocals are their own instrument in themselves, and he shows how it can be distinct and impactful component of the music.
I have a plastic fish attached to a plastic board and when I put batteries in it, it plays this song. At the "Take me to the river part", the fish curls to look straight at you and it's mouth moves. "Push me in the water.." :D I have no idea how old this thing is but it still works.
This live recording is much closer to Rev. Green's original than the Talking Heads studio version (which is best described as "quirky"). The real star on that stage was Bernie Worrell, who'd been keyboardist for Parliament / Funkadelic. His use of the MiniMoog for the bass line in "Flash Light" changed Funk forever.
I've never commented on this channel, but I have to say it's so great to see someone as positive and upbeat as Jamel find something that brings even more joy to him!!! Just had to say it!
And they didn’t turn it on and turn it up because they were being filmed - the performance I saw in Columbia, Maryland was every bit as energetic and amazing as this one.
Absolutely. I saw them on this tour twice. The best was the Greek Theater in Berkeley because I was front row right in front of Edna and Lynn. I danced nonstop at this show and when I looked behind me, EVERYone in the audience was on their feet and dancing too. I would try to copy whatever dance moves Edna and Lynn were doing and they'd see me and do something else like "Ok then, try this!". LOL
@@AaronSpielman and Jonni- this is awesome- 3 peeps just in this thread were at the same show. www.setlist.fm/setlist/talking-heads/1983/william-randolph-hearst-greek-theatre-berkeley-ca-3bd39858.html
Nope, nope. The original 1980 version, slow, soulful with a great bass line, is the one everyone remembers. This one is like some kind of Las Vegas Casino Lounge act.
Oh, no, this was pure church vibes. Maybe I went to different church. :) Call and response, having to take off the suit jacket, walking back then coming up front with renewed energy, that's gospel choir stuff. Gorgeous.
Was not what I was expecting either. But I enjoyed it. In my eyes, this band can do no wrong. I enjoyed dancing to a song I normally just sing along to.
Interesting version. I prefer their studio version of this song MUCH more than this live version. While it is good ... if I'd been at this concert, I think I would have felt cheated and a little let down, as I LOVE the studio version so much. However, the reality of it is that this is the Talking Heads and getting to see them live was probably a great experience (that I never got to do).
@@jupiteroptimus1166 Jam did one recently.. I'd still like him to do a reaction the original music video.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kUn4Bec9Ll4.html
There is an interview with David Byrne and Spike Lee in this week’s Esquire magazine (they are collaborating on a film version of Byrne’s Broadway show), and Byrne talks about connecting to the audience. He originally trained as a visual artist, but was frustrated that his installations weren’t connecting with anybody. He formed Talking Heads just as a sideline because he was inspired by living around the corner from legendary punk club CBGB, and found for the first time that his band was actually connecting with people in a meaningful way. From that point he realized that music was to be his medium as an artist.
Give the studio version a listen, it’s slower and more soulful. The live version is great too, more upbeat and fun, but the studio one is a way different vibe you need to experience.
Talking Heads, one of the greatest bands of all time. If you are not familiar with them I would highly recommend listening to their catalog in chronological order. That way you can see how much they progressed as a band and how they quit on top. A truly remarkable band. Also, thank you for acknowledging David Byrne’s awesome creativity. One of the most underrated artists of my generation.
I want to thank you for presenting the "introduce the band" segment without interruption. Very easy for folks watching live performances to roll their eyes and skip past stuff like that.
This is the first time that I've heard this version of this song. My experience of this song is from the studio version of this song. Many thanks for reviewing this song for a reaction version.
You need to check out some early Robert Palmer-SAILIN SHOES/HEY JULIA/SNEAKING SALLY THROUGH THE ALLEY. Members of the Meters and Little Feet are in the backing band.
You never knew what Talking Heads were going to come up with, but their music and their videos were always interesting and very creative, plus that ultra funky bass! Oh yeah! Not everyone's taste, but if you were open to something a little different, their music was a whole lot of fun!
Totally agree. Jamal goes for some studio stuff where a later or live version blows it away and then THIS. night and day here is the real version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v4azbl96BJY.html apple and orange and yes it is just my opinion
Just work your way through this DVD. It's the best representation of the Talking Heads you'll ever see. I took a road trip my freshman year of college, in the early 80s, to Miami University in Ohio to see this concert. It was amazing - probably the best live music experience I've ever had.
This is making me think that They Might Be Giants would probably be a good avenue to go down for reactions. But yeah, Stop Making Sense is probably the best concert film ever made.
Okay so it’s Saturday morning, I made a little playlist and threw it up on the tv and mopped my house dancing to this with you and Brother David Byrne. Thank you for finally doing Talking Heads and for the dance! Have a great weekend ✌️
The Tom Tom Club was Tina's side project that sang a couple of songs in this movie too. They are also some of the most heavily sampled songs in history.
Pretty sure they re-arranged this from their studio version, and changed to a major key from a minor, (studio), to accommodate the fantastic backing vocals, and bring their harmonies out front. Great version.
This is one of the greatest concert films ever made. If you want more soul, funk, creativity try Peter Gabriel's Secret World. It's an experience for the heart, head, and soul.
Nice!!! I've always been a big Talking Heads fan. You might want to check out the 2014 Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Obama. Al Green is one of the Honorees. A version of this song is done, in front of Al, by Mavis Staples and Sam Moore, of Sam and Dave fame. All I can say is get ready for some good gospel vibes. Great channel Jamel!!! You're an inspiration to what's good about humanity.
Al Green was Reverend Al Green; he was a minister, had a parish and began to focus on gospel music. That's how spiritual Mr. Green became after in the Memphis, Tennessee, home of singer Al Green in the early morning hours of October 18, 1974, when an ex-girlfriend burst in on him in the bath and poured a pot of scalding-hot grits on his back before retreating to a bedroom and shooting herself dead with Green's own gun. Not everyone, however, would have processed the meaning of the incident quite the way that Green did. Believing that he had strayed from the righteous musical and spiritual course intended for him, Al Green had become a born-again Christian one year earlier. But after the attack by Mary Woodson on this day in 1974, he began a process that would eventually lead him to renounce pop superstardom and all that it stood for. His version of this song is divine.
The Talking Heads formed in New Yorker University art school. They were the tail end of the New York punk scene before it became New Wave. David Brynes was totally a square and just embraces it and heightened it. Hence the horn rimmed glasses, over sized suits, stereotypical dorky dance moves. He was just like "you think I'm a square? Well fine I'll be a square and make some of the best music ever. Fuck you". I respect the hell out of that.
I watched it a few days ago, and I noticed that Jerry didn't look very happy. I wonder if being taken off of guitar for most of the show didn't sit well with him.
@@mgordon1100 In fact, Jerry was tired. Most of his appearances in the movies were shot the last gig. The morning of that particular gig, he had to get up very early for a business meeting no one else in the band wanted to attend. In the end, he got there, did nothing because the suits were talking between each others without paying much attention to the musician. He felt useless, bored and a little bit angry because he had to appear on camera that same evening... And now you know why he looks angry/tired at times. Anyway, tired, angry or not, he delivers a few of his best ever solos in there, so...
So incredibly happy this show was professionally recorded for history. I was lucky enough to be IN THE AUDIENCE for this show and can honestly say the entire auditorium was ALIVE AND ELECTRIC.
Can't get enough Talking Heads. The best and quirkyness of their songs is infectious 💃🕺. This is one of my faves by them 💗. Keep up the good work bro 🤗
Been telling myself over the years I was not much of a fan of Talking Heads but watching these reactions and singing every word... has me rethinking that! 🤣🤣🎸🤘
I discovered talking heads in 1996. Just outta high school. The CD was only $6 at a used record store. The album cover pulled me in. I put it in the CD player in my car and it stayed there for a week or so. I just listened to it over and over and over again. My four kids have watched “stop making sense” several times with me. They all love the band and Byrnes solo stuff. My wife consistently states he is the best performing artist she’s ever seen. ( she wasn’t familiar with them/him until we got together ). The day Byrne leaves this plane of existence with be a soul crushing day for myself and millions of others. He’s a performance genius. So damn creative. Glad you’ve discovered them and are down the rabbit hole. Keep up the great work brother.
I remember walking past Spencer’s in the mall and the motion sensor mounted bass singing this! Lol I also remember watching SNL when they performed this song back in the days.
Watching the DVD is essential! I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out (The Grand Lake, in Oakland) and by the end half the audience was on their feet dancing. Best concert movie ever!
Talking Heads are one my favourite bands ever...they paved the way for so many bands such as Radiohead, Thom Yorke is an avid fan! David Byrne is a musical genius & Tina Weymouth is a goddess!! Such energy this band have, juat like your channel!! 🤟🤟
Thank you, you finally listen to it, I had a mechanical bass that would sing this song every time someone would walk by it, they became really popular and started selling them everywhere!
I can watch and listen to ANY song from Stop Making Sense at ANY time and it gives me the ultimate joy, I adore this concert film and Talking Heads are just great.
Thank for taking my request......Take Me to the River," was the high peak of the concert. The film left out some parts of the concert. When I saw them the two women surrounded David on both sides ..front and back and they acted like he was going in the water and being baptized....OOOOOOoooooooUUuuuuuuuuu....WWWEEEEeeeee!!! That had all of us on our feet...screaming with our hands raised up like we were in Church!!!! Hahaha...lol.....hahaha....ok my...goodness...I watching you react to this video with my TV on....and commercial comes on TV singing.."Take Me To The River".......Hahahahaha....lol.....hahahaha...
