I was taken by his grace and honest charm. He gave everyone his fullest attention and listened closely. I used to be a TV documentary sound recordist for most of my life before retiring. As with many comments on here, I disliked Mr. Portillo when he was a member of Thatcher's cabinet. In the mid to late 1990's we, as a film crew, were sent to Scotland for a week to make a pilot documentary with Michael Portillo. I was staggered to find what a thoroughly nice guy he is.We had some interesting discussions over that week about his time in politics. I have the utmost respect for him. The only problem with talking pints is it is too short. We need a weekly segment for at least an hour with several people. A proper pub debate!

It was absolutely a great interview. Portillo always speaks so well and with so much insight. Prime Minister material! Farage did a great interview it was relaxed and Farage didn’t interupt, he let his guest speak. It was just two people discussing politics. Very refreshing to watch.

I do like Portilio. Quite often disagree with him on policy but he presents his arguments well and I always could understand his point of view even if I disagreed with it. Hearing him talk about politics makes me feel nostalgic for BBC This Week. It's a travesty that it got axed, it was the best political show on TV.

Indeed - he's 100% responsible for the term "a Portillo Moment", and if that doesn't make a chap a legend, I don't know what does. (Google the term if you don't know what it is. You might be surprised by it, and I suspect you WILL learn something. You can thank me another day.)

…a grown up conversation; how refreshing. It’s a shame that rounded individuals like Portillo with wisdom and experience are replaced by inexperienced nobody’s. This country ought to find a way of including such individuals. Farage falls into the same bracket; do I agree with everything, he says? No, but he’s right on most issues.
