I have been on and off marijuana since I was 11. It's rough, I've gone several years not smoking, then I start again for months to years. It is addictive, perhaps not as much other drugs but it is unfortunate. With the grace of God I overcame my last temptation cycle and am grateful.
Dr. Harrelson has a heck of an accent, very musical and fun to listen to. Great episode gentlemen. I'll have to try St. Michael's Holiday next time I'm at A&E!
It's great seeing Alan and Jimmy discussing pipes. I've been a fan of Jimmy for about the past 20 years or so and I've been following Alan since I started with pipe smoking almost 2 years ago. Pax brothers..
In Pennsylvania here. The Amish grow tobacco here but are somewhat divided on smoking. Some do smoke a pipe. I'm North of Pittsburgh and rarely run into a fellow pipe smoker. Fortunately I get my Dutch tobacco and supplies at a local store. Though I have some high end pipes I actually prefer my Dr Grabow pipes with acrylic stems. For $40 I'm happy with them. Made in USA and briar. I'm off the cigarettes now. Shelby Foote was told by his doctor to give up cigarettes and his pipe. He gave up the cigarettes but he wouldn't give up his pipe because that was part of him. I'm 62 and remember the pipe and tobacco shops that were in every mall. Those days are gone. As far as marijuana goes...I use some medically. I have no personal objection to responsible recreational use but I think some people treat it like a religion. Same with alcohol I suppose.
I loved this! I've been hoping to eventually hear Jimmy do a longer treatment of his love of pipe smoking. I often have enjoyed a pipe while listening to Astonishing World, and watching parapsychology class lectures 😅
A lot of famous Catholics were nasal tobacco users. St. Padre Pio even had a hole in his habit for easy access. Snuff used to be more common but it is pretty obscure and hard to come by nowadays especially in America.
Pope Leo was a cocaine user. Sounds like satire? He drank Vin Mariani which contained cocaine. Unlike coca-cola today it actually did have a narcotic effect.
We used to smoke in the classrooms in college years ago; people used a Sucrets tin for an ash tray. It was not uncommon to have coffee in class with the cigarette. A large percentage of people smoked.
I have severe seasonal and fragrance based respiratory allergies but pipes and cigars don't seem to bother me, in fact, nic has anti-inflammatory properties and I've felt improvement after sitting with a pipe. I have more issues from sitting outside while smoking than the actual smoking itself. That said, everyone is different and the only way you'll know for sure is to try.
Oh one other note, my wife is allergic to certain trees (pine family) and smoke from the burning of that wood will give her an anaphylactic reaction. Latakia, which is a dominant component in English style tobaccos, is a type of tobacco that is cured over wood fire and she has allergic reactions if she's around it. If I smoke an English blend I have to do it out of doors.

@@JimmyAkin Jimmy, I love your shows. Did you know Pope Leo from over a 100 years ago, the first Pope who appeared on film footage? He was a drinker of Vin Mariani which was made with coca leaf and it did have a cocaine effect. The Pope after Pope Leo also liked it and awarded the chemist who made the narcotic wine a "gold star" award from the Vatican.

the italian weekly missal pamphlet "la Domenica" published a 2-parts issue on transhumanism over these two past sundays. It's veeery closely monitored by the bishops' conference so I think that can be a good starting point.
Jimmy sorry I don’t agree. Tobacco is addictive, you are in a room where you are going to absorb the nicotine second hand whether you inhale or not. One very successful risk strategy is risk avoidance, when it comes to ADDICTIVE substances, dosage notwithstanding, I would promote that. Are you suggesting a pinch of cocaine once a month is fine... I am no saint I have no issues with people smoking, but have to question promoting this even quoting statistics and claiming God is ok with it, I doubt any cardiologist or oncologist would support this view. Let’s agree to disagree. With great respect.
