In this episode, we’ll break down how Geddy Lee uses power chords in Rush’s “Dreamline.” We’ll start with a quick harmonic run down and as always tips for fingering, technical execution, and practice.
This is a grove where playing with one finger in the right hand and foregoing one-finger-per-fret in the left make good sense.

Such a fantastic tune. I first heard this in 1992 and felled totally in love with this bassline and song, Dreamline, Ghost of a chance and Roll the Bones. I was only 16 then, im 42 now and feels like it was yesterday the album came out. well played.

Les Claypool may be the single greatest example of power chords on bass. John The Fisherman, Nature Boy, Here Come The Bastards, Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers, etc.

Excellent! I always enjoyed the interplay between Alex and Geddy on this song. The power chords Geddy throws in there really punch through during the chorus. Thanks for highlighting a song from a time in their career where a lot of their music is kind of overlooked.

Aris, that's a very good lesson on using power chords. I wish I heard this when I was playing in a trio! And that blue Modulus is absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you for watching RodShop! THe bass is actually a Marleaux Consat. Modulus are beautiful basses, too!

@@LearnBassWithAri Oh, so sorry for my mistake! That's why the shape looked different from any Modulus I've seen! Marleaux clearly makes some fantastic instruments as well. I'll have to check them out further. Nice choice on that one, may you enjoy it for years to come!

Huge thumbs up girl! Dreamline is one of my faves. Very well explained and I learned quite a bit, so thank you. Much love from one musician/Rush fan to another from London, Ontario 💜 P.s. I don't think I've ever commented on a video that was posted within hours of it being posted: first time for everything! 😉 P.p.s. feel free to watch my shitty videos 😂 and I also did part of Roll the Bones

Great video, thanks! I noticed you are using your pinky on your left hand in place of your middle finger when spanning 2 frets. At some point I started doing that too without realizing it, and have been self conscious about it. I have been thinking maybe it was a bad technique or even lazy... I'm glad to see a player of your experience doing that and I'll gladly stop worrying about it! Do you have any thoughts or comments on the subject?

It depends on the situation. Here I shed more light www.notreble.com/buzz/2016/12/19/talking-technique-the-one-finger-per-fret-controversy/ Thanks for watching and commenting! (Reading your comment again, I think you mean ring finger, right?) In most situations I use one-finger-per-fret, but there are exceptions. There is great utility in practicing it, though! If you dig in the talking technique column on notreble you will find many exercises for 1FPF shedding.

the quality of the perfect intervals compared to the other classes of sounds. But yeah in the context of a song and with distortion it is another matter :D
