My favorite was when the Big E and Horus pulled out their Yu-Gi-Oh decks and Horus got banished to the shadow realm.

I always wanted to see the end of the series as Loken says, I was there, the day Horus slew the Emperor. I will miss this opportunity greatly.

One of the moments that got me really hard was when Horus trows Letuu away from the Emperor and he just manages to fall right in Khornes foot, right beside his axe, the sheer despair and dread that Leetu feels when Khorne looks at him was suffocating to read, almost like i was there with him.

There was enough pain to make Rogal cry. His father would become undead, his brother Sanguinius butchered, most of his family dead or consumed by chaos, the Imperium left leaderless, Malcador a charred corpse. Not even someone as disciplined and stoic as Dorn can bear such a burden.

As always, thank you for crediting the wonderful artists. Nobody ever does!

Vulkan, although he has his moments of all-action and being a bad-ass, ultimately fulfills his role or Wyrd as the One to guard the hearth.

I'd sort of hoped the final line would bookend the whole series with the very first line. "I was there the day Horus slew the Emperor..." M

Tbh. I thought that Vulkan for a moment was going to stand side by side with Malcador. To not simply stand vigal over him, but to lend his perpetualality as aid to Malcador. To lay his hand on Malcadors shoulder and null the pain of the throne for Malcador to just HANG ON A BIT MORE!!! Ah well. Still loved how it went. When Horus relented though. Oof. I never saw it as a trick. I saw it as Horus' humanity brought to light again. For the very spark of his being return to simply say to Horus to end it. Now THAT cuts you like an Anathema blade to the heart. All in all a brilliant Novel and conclusion to the seige of Terra/Horus Heresy. Now I can't wait till the scouring series begins cause that's literally what looks to be where they're picking things off. Right from the end and the death part 3. We'll see Gulliman breaking the seige of Terra, Sanguineous' body returned to BAAL, the iron cage trap, the lions exterminatous of traitor worlds, perhaps even the fight of DA vs Falken at Caliban!!! The more we will see of the Scouring the more we will see of how the Primarchs all left. Truly it's going to be heavy in the aftermath.

Horus imbued with Chaos was so much stronger than E. But, somehow in course of metaphysical fight they started using Tarot. Final Emperors hand was: The Guardsman, The Throne, The Space Marine, The Knight of Mandatio, The Lantern and Revelation. ‘‘A weak reading, of ill fortune, and in disarray’’- though Horus. But, we now know who the real Master of Tarot was. Card order as protagonists and events played out was: The Space Marine (Le2), The Gurdsman (Oll Persson), The Knight of Mandatio (Gavriel Loken), The Lantern (Astronomican relit), The Revelation (humanity supports E. ?), The Throne (Emperor’s victory and his painful destiny). The most important card spread in 40k. :)

Haven't seen anyone discuss the implications of Sanguinius feathers being sharp enough to act as an Anatheme to step through reality.

I was always in the camp that big E was a stone cold guy but after this book and seeing how he was with everyone now I do think the emperor cared.

dude that moment when "its not his fathers power its how he steals it from you!" was fucking incredible. also is basilio faux truly dead? Keeble does his basilio voice when xanthus talks about taking some of malcadors notes for himself "i will be needing those"

It was like a mass intervention in lupercals court with one after another showing up to talk to him

I just can't believe that after all this time Abnett actually delivered something so powerful and amazing. That he told the story partly as we have always heard it, but also completely changed, yet in a way that is satisfying and fascinating. He crafted something that answers many questions we had, but also created just as many new ones.

Two cool details: Since Horus "woke up" on his own, his death was what he wanted. Horus Lupercal dies smiling. And we learn Erebus and Lorgar are hard at work on the next Chaos-lord. Someone they call; "The Despoiler" wink wink ;)

Spoilers! A small but nice touch is that the part of the chapter where Horus finally fell is part 16 (at least in the audiobook). As is appropriate for the 16th son.

one thing i found confusing was at the end Actae and katt merge with each other and Actae takes on katt's real name which is Katerina Moriana. But then there is also another Moriana Morhausen who is one of the chosen of Malcador. So which of these is the Moriana that ends up betraying the inquisition and goes to Abaddon in the novel talon of horus?

I had, and continue to have, all of the feels. What a well written story.

I fully believe Dan Abnett's experience revamping Marvels space epic helped him become this good at having so many moving parts yet always hitting the mark. His prose is so much better than most people would be when writing something this complicated, I love ADB but Dan started and finished the Heresy and I think he nailed both and is the best writer in the black library

Still think it weird Horus and Big E both managed to use their god like powers badly and Horus would fall for that trap. Just strange considering they put so much power into him for him to use it... like a newbie.

I’ve always known for years Dan Abnett was an amazing author, but he really deserves his just accolades & awards for delivering such a finale. After thirty years of anticipation, something near impossible to deliver.

So the story of the emperor eviscerating Horus with a psychic blast of golden light is ecclesiarchy propaganda?

It was emotionally draining. It did, literally, everything that the lore purported to happen without any 11 hour switcheroos or McGuffins or the other shoe dropping and still, I felt like it was a death in the family, not so much sad as just...drained. Even the last minute reveal about Samus felt like it was a foregone conclusion and just furthered that sensation of having the life sipped out of you.

Loved it honestly. I know some think it’s overdone but I loved the depiction of the empire and Horus fighting almost a thousand battles at once both mentally and physically. Blood angels moments were great too

I think a lot of 40k fans will feel fulfilled and a loyalist like myself was sooo happy near the end when the last loyalist forces arrived over Terra! But damn man, I hate Erebus even more now! I couldn#'t keep up with the books. I think I stopped around book 40. It's a shame, I wish I could have kept at it but life caught up with me.

I just finished the audible version today. It was so much better than part 2 it’s not even funny. Really did the Blood Angels, Dorn and Sigismund solid.

Overall 8.5/10. There were so so many moving parts to this conclusion that even a legend like Abnett is going to be hard pressed to bring it all together. How much of the creative decisions were entirely his call, and how much came from on high, I cannot say with certainty. But my main critiques: *I think Valdor needed a little more respect put on his name. The greatest Custodian to have ever lived, the guy that could hold his own against primarchs, seems hard pressed in situations where he really should be unfazed and walking through with little exertion. *Loken going out like he did was such a heartbreaking moment... The Erebus hate train continues, the grimdark gets grimmer and darker, and I genuinely wish this was not how he went. Loken deserved better than Erebus chaotic evil nonsense. *Same with Sanguinius. We knew what the ending was gonna be, and it wasn't going to be pretty, but I feel there was more room to include all the old legends in here, especially seeing how they used the Custodian and the Guardsman already. Throw in Sanguinius getting his last charge in there, chipping away one tiny part of Horus' breastplate, especially with the athame going in there at the end. The primarch who was respected and beloved by all going out in a fiery rage of defiance, the rage and anguish of his death translating to his sons, driven berserk by the loss of their genefather. That would've ruled. *Not entirely sold on the prospect of a potential return by Horus. He wasn't psionically vaporized like I expected, and that final line by the Emps was ominous. I hope they leave him dead and gone, personally, but it's not my story to write. Just personal taste here. A few other sticking points, but by and large the book was excellent, and I won't bother listing all the things I really loved about the novel, or I'd be here all day. Also I'm glad to see Mr. Abnett has not lost his touch at all. Looking forward to more novels by him in the future, but for now I think he has earned some vacation for his contributions!

It’s very interesting that we get all of these things seemingly confirmed: The Emperor did love his sons, The Emperor was fighting for the benefit of humanity and not some convoluted godhood scheme, that Horus did briefly reclaim his humanity and beg forgiveness. Getting these answers, assuming these are answers and not unreliable retellings, kinda leaves me feeling mixed. On one hand, I’ve always been a good Imperial lad and feel vindicated in my trust of The Emperor. On the other hand, that mystery was a key part of what got me so into the lore and I’m sad to see it, presumably, gone away.

I believe now that Erebus knew a lot more of what will happen compared to anyone else. Ensuring certain things WILL occur to gain more power later. It truly seems to me that he is now mind controlling Abaddon just like how Horus became controlled. I really need to finish reading throne of light for some context on how Erebus views abaddon now.

I really wanted to see Guilliman, Vulkan, Dorn, Valdor, and the Khan all interacting at the end.

I've been waiting for this

Overall, I enjoyed it, especially the moments with Dorn and Valdor and Vulkan in the throne room too. I also enjoyed the end of Ollanius’ storyline, it was fitting and cathartic. I found the epic uno game between Horus and the Emperor a little bit much to be honest. I do feel like the sacrifice of Sanguinius was a little underwhelming in the end. Old lore was that he died to give the emperor a chance in his fight against Horus but in this book his fight with Horus made no discernible difference to the outcome of final fight. It would have been exactly the same if he hadn't made it to the Vengeful Spirit at all. I enjoyed it for the most part and am now looking forward to the scouring series. I was kind of hoping to see the reaction of Roboute when he arrived to see the state of Terra and his father but I’ll have to wait for that.

As much as I love the big fight between the Emperor vs Horus. I cant help but laugh when they reached a point where the battled with Tarot Cards like it was Yu-Gi-Oh 😂. Also, I loved the mention of a particular palace librarian name which proved to be a big pain in the arse for the Inquisition in the Inquisitor Book Series. Well played Dan Abnett, well played.

My final thoughts from The End and The Death are it really could've used a few more passes through the editors, I don't think it needed to be 3 volumes it ground to a halt in places. Dan Abnett has read a lot of classical literature and he really wants you to know it! I also think he's changed some established lore and for the worse, I can imagine Blood Angels fan not being happy with how he treats them and Sanguinius (who I'm also a fan of). He's also dampened my enthusiasm for The Scouring, as he's made it clear that the traitors are broken and have lost thier chaos gifts. So it doesn't sound like they will be putting much of a fight. I would've preferred the end of the horus heresy to have been given to one of the other writers, like Chris wraight or Graham mcneill.

god I hate Erebus. would have preferred Abaddon end Loken. I absolutely enjoyed this final chapter. I can’t believe we are done after 17 years of books. (Whew!)

I like how we got to see past the veil of imperial propaganda/ legend I began my 40K journey back in 2019 even though I haven't been with the heresy or even The siege since the beginning to be a fan at this moment in time at the culmination of 20 years worth of storytelling is something special

I’m a little confused on how much the Justaerin were given the custodes a hard time especially for Valdor. I have always been under the impression that Valdor is primarch level without the title. Would a primarch of had the same trouble in the same scenario? Am I just underestimating the justaerin?

One part I don't get based on the book is how on earth the Vengeful Spirit ever got away. They make it clear that the fleeing traitor forces were getting dumpstered in the void, but Abaddon had time to not only get the ship working again (which is insane in it's own right, considering how fucked up it was), but also bring aboard a bunch of dropships' worth of other troops while the ship was just sitting there dead with no shields? When basically the entire Ultramarines fleet would be bloodthirsty to blow it to smithereens?

Yes in my best loken voice. "i was there when Horus slew the Emperor". But lets take into effect. 1. Big E gave up majority of his power. He went into the fight at like 40% of his full power. And Horus thought he was so much better, and even then he questioned his father even with the "old four" power in him that much power and E with about 40% of his. Shows if anyone wants to know, why exactly the old four hated big E, they were in my eyes scared of him. I mean he walked in the eye and stole power from all four of them without even drawing any attention to himself till he was already gone. Thats why the old four scattered his 20 sons across the universe to try and get back at him. Then when big E cab suck and suck up warp. To the point. One snap at his finger he was to become the dark King. I to this day was the old fours goal, the whole " if you cant beat em join em" statement. Chaos knows they cant defeat big E fully, so use horus to push E to assend to the "Dark King" Yes, E would rule them. But they wanted E at this point. They knew they cant corrupt him, break him, or kill him fully. Well ok we will let him lead us, even though we hate him. But as long as hes around. We cant win.. So i wonder what would Horus have done when he was sad, broken when E wouldnt join him, surrender, or even show any emotion. He couldnt he gave it up. Damn horus if you had only known. Then assended to heaven. And in doing so saved humanity from eternal damnation in hell. Now what did big E do in the three novels "TEATD" vol 1,2,3 E did the samething, took the beating, torture, bodily death. then comes back to keep humanity from eternal damnation. 😮. E,Horus, and Sanguinius will be back, along with Valdor (king in yellow) and his legion x 10 of blanks and other types of soldiers and chaoic tech! And weapons that humanity will use agaisnt their own creators (weapons & tech). So much big E can do and hasnt done yet. But its coming! Its why E was so against worshipping him, doing so to him, yes it would have made him super power. As we saw after horus crushed his skull into bain matter mess! With all the chants for big E. The Astronomican instantly becoming a blaze. The light became stronger then the dark! Remember darkness is only the absence of light!. And if E would have let humans worship him during and after the great crusades. Not only him, but chaos would have grown stronger and the great rift and eye would have grown faster and bigger and sooner. Cause worship one, others will be worshipped. We know the webway was part of that reason. But its like a fuzzy static tv set in the 90s (with a coat hanger wrapped in Tinfoil ) lol. My fellow late 80s-90s brothers and sisters know that struggle all to well as I. With anything else he had planned or was doing behind the scenes to keeo humanity safe and make the old four be destroyed in his ways and terms. Its inevitable. They just dont know it. And he allows them to feel abd do so. Hes not ready to shatter their dreams just yet. Let them feel big and powerful and when hes ready he will wipe em. Well sorry for my rent on another of your amazing posts brother. But very few get in depths with the Lore as I like you do brother. I could be totally off with my take of all the novels, codexs and any other lore. ummm why wouldnt it happen....Perty hates Chaos and thinks being "empowered" by chaos is like how a Pimp empowers a Ho...... I think its more likely he hears Bile can make non-warpfuckery marines and goes and you know...voluntells him to reinforce the Iron Warriors geneseed with these warp immune marines and then goes and tries to Solo Legion Chaos/the Xenos/everything in existence declaring himself Emperor of Mankind via Conquest...at which point Dad shows up and goes "see...I always knew you could do it perty" and names him warmaster lol.....I mean he might be disloyal to the Emperor but he is loyal to Humanity, and Imperial Atheism, Trans humanism.....and he hasnt sold out....could do an a whole anti-hero arc till he meets Grampa Smurf and the Lion maybe Vulkan and the Sanguinor you know big family reunion where the Star Child appears and makes perty cry

The old lore and bit of mystique was better.

Only criticism I have would be when Horus lets go and he realizes his folly. If the aspect of Sanguinius stuck on the ship would’ve said something to the effect of “forgive him father, he knew not what he did” to really complete the iconography. A spiritual wound that rends Horus’ heart asunder and sparks a singular tear from both of them. Then E says his line and boom. Done. Otherwise 9.9/10 Ultimately I just wanted a little something more in that final second with Horus. More dialogue or description of his blunder and then love/forgiveness from E

Bit of a let down tbh

I couldn’t find you on any of my feeds for some reason and you used to always come up I had to track down this video by going to your page very strange.

While I enjoyed it, it was VASTLY overwritten, and introduced plot elements that weren't needed (the Dark King). Interesting stuff yes, but it almost made it meander very badly, to the point of unreadability in some places. You can tell abnett considered this his magnum opus. I think he just got lost in it and he probably has enough pull at GE to where nobody could or would reel him back in. I really hope Guy Haley's writing the first Scouring book. I want to see some solid interactions between these characters that isn't lost in vast quantities of internal dialog.

@Wolf Lord Rho, the Emperor wiping out an entire company of Word Bearers including terminators and dreadnaughts is not an impressive feat, especially for the Emperor, I'm not sure why you make this sound like His "true power" when it's anything but.

I really only enjoyed from about part 10, chapter 17 on. The whole mass of the book was too bloated. The parts about the survivors was worth the overlong beginning and middle. 4/10 rating
