@yleilaf.a7967 Год назад
I won't say that the English language in itself is flexible. English has a set of grammar and syntax rules like any other language. It's just that English speakers let a lot of mistakes (if we notice it or if we don't) slide cause we only care if we understand what you're saying and not how you are saying it. If you want to take the English language seriously and use it at an academic level, then it can become a tricky language cause you must follow the rules.
@yleilaf.a7967
@yleilaf.a7967 Год назад
@@djWOOF I don't know about tone, but because of the VARIOUS accents different native English speakers can have, it can become impossible to understand someone speaking because of their accent even if they are a native. I have a cousin from Algeria who understands English fluently be she can't understand AAVE cause she was taught English with Received Pronunciation. Many American or English speakers can't understand many Scottish or Irish native speakers because of how different their accents are.

As a Korean language learner currently in Korea, the sentiment of being shy and finding it difficult to make native speaking friends is definitely a shared experience! As much as we would hope to find native Korean speakers to help us learn and practice, us native English speakers are more than happy to provide opportunities for English practice as well!
@Sunflowersarepretty
@Sunflowersarepretty Год назад
I actually found their english pretty decent knowing that they grow up in South Korea where they dont have much opportunities in terms of speaking. I know they attended language academies or had some sort of exposure to English that gives them an upper hand but I have to give it to them because I wont be naming my nationality or where I live but ironically despite English being everywhere hardly few people can speak good English by that I mean without having to mix their language in. Few people are fluent to hold a conversation like that.
@empusafasciata8035
@empusafasciata8035 Год назад
You don't necessarily need native speakers for speaking practice, you can attend speaking clubs, record podcasts, etc. Although it is endeed prefered to comunicate with natives from time to time by no means it's essential.
@Sunflowersarepretty

@@empusafasciata8035 what works for me is recording myself. I agree with your point on not always being surrounded amongst native speakers since we got RU-vid and other apps where we can immerse ourselves in the language but at the end of the day I think being in that environment where you can hear the language around you helps immensely. If you can then this best option if not then the second best is RU-vid and other sites.

One thing I do wish is that Koreans with Korean names would STOP using English names cuz "it's hard for foreigners to pronounce". Eff that, they should keep their names; I think the more ppl who do it, the more ppl who aren't familiar with Korean names will get used to them. It will only help ppl with Korean names. I live in the USA, ain't no way my best friends last name Dobrzanski and all those other types of names were easy when Polish started coming here!🤣

@@jonathantae7753 true but that’s even MORE reason to keep using their Korean names. The more ppl that continue to use their Korean names the more “common” sounding they will become. It hAs to start sometime. It’s better to start NOW for future ppl that want to use their Korean names.
@mjmj734
@mjmj734 Год назад
I agree, but many Koreans who have english name are just too sick of people who pronounce incorrectly no matter how many times they teach the right pronunciation. For example Yeseul, Yesol are common girl’s names in Korea but I heard soooo many foreigners keep saying a**h***. It’s not their fault but you know it’s annoying. There’s a funny video clip related to this, watch Having a non-white name by ProZD. It happens ALL THE TIME. And many hagwons(private academies)/companies in Korea ask us to make English names. This is because people can get along more easily if they have English name that has less hierarchical expressions than in Korean. If someone who’re older than me I can’t call him/her by the name, I have to use unnie/oppa/hyung/noona/seonbaenim etc.

The Koreans interviewed are wonderful English speakers. Better than me that is for sure. I have been told I have an odd Scandi inflection in my voice tone. Many years ago I learnt my fathers Scandinavian language when I was 18, after returning to live there for 2 years. I did not go to language school but worked in a small rural farming village with family...it was an awesome experience. How did they put up with me for 2 years? I did work hard and I ❤ed it. It was so exciting but tough in the winter fishing, farming and hunting...became my ❤loves. Because I was half Scandi people looked at me strangely and knew I was not a local. It is a odd feeling to be an alien and an outsider, but once they knew my family lineage I was accepted instantly. Up till then I was so shy to speak to strangers in case they ridiculed me. My confidence grew and I could speak and laugh with them. Being accepted gave me bucketloads of confidence. I always laughed and smiled...to break the icy barrier of communicado. Awesome!! Romance also helps you leap thru the language barrier. My first bf at the time was a comedian and teased me in a good way. He taught me how important body language skills are in the area we lived. Harking back to archaic viking times but it still works. Best peops to teach you are your lover, patient relatives; being an Uncle and my 80 year old grandmother were great but best of all my young cousins taught me and teased me mercilessly. In the beginning my cousins basic reading books were perfect learning aids. I made sure I made bedside story time fun with my animal noises and impromptu acting to get them into fits of laughter. They were very candid and loved picking up on all my mistakes. They loved the power of being the superior knowledge fountain which was good for them and me. They are both teachers now. They say now that many years ago they felt sorry for me because I was sooo dumb. It inspired them to teach. Also I made sure I thanked them all the time for imparting their knowledge to me. Appreciation and acknowledgement of their help can really make people feel good. We did have lots of tickling and pillow fights as well. So in the end I could speak the dialect fluently. Flat peasant language they call it. I loved the dialect it was cool and very funny in the haha sense it described things so eloquently...in a blunt way. So a native speaking lover or friend helps tremendously to learn a foreign language. Also kids are wonderful to speak with and love repeating words and inflections, and they love to be your teacher.

My native language is English, my husband of 34 years is from El Salvador. I was only 20 when we met, a privilege, spoiled, rotten white kid from the suburbs of Toronto, he a refugee from El Salvador, fleeing the Civil War. He was only in the country for about eight months when we met. He was fleeing not only the war, but the church, because he was gay, and knew he could not be himself ever without putting his life in danger. We met in December of 1988. I moved in with him a week later! Talk about desperate! He’s only a couple years older, we said we would give it six months and see what happens, it’s December we had 35 years together. Why am I saying all this? Because I have to learn Spanish fast. He knows I’ve always wanted to go to Europe, we’ve travelled the globe, but never Europe, so he picked Spain as my anniversary present for 10 days. He also told me I have to be fluent in Spanish before we leave. He speaks it fluently already, the years of me, teasing him about his English is coming to an end! Lol! How in gods name do you learn a different language without thinking about your native tongue? It’s a Latin based language, so there are some similarities, and I can already speak some of it, and understand most of it. Did I mention our mother-in-law lives with us? Latinos don’t come with a warning label, but they should, especially for gringos who marry a Latino! You marry one, you get the whole family! They never shut up at home, so I just turned them out. That’s why I can understand most of it, but I pretend not to, because a lot of times they’re talking about me, but they still do it anyways, so it’s time for revenge. I’m going to learn Castilian Spanish. Or as I like to call it, real Spanish.(they hate it when I say that! Evil grin ensues). So what is your suggestion? Castilian, Spanish is much different than regular Spanish, it’s much more elegant, and… A little bit more complex. How do I forget everything I know, and start from scratch, because that’s the best way to learn, I think?

The best way at the moment is to start self learning. There are a lot of good websites that teach Korean and follow a structured curriculum. Looking for a Korean friend to teach might be a bit difficult at the initial stage because of the language barrier. But having a basic knowledge in Korean can also aid you in getting friends. So, I recommend that you start learning on your own first. Or look for friends in Nigeria that are learning the language, they can help out as well and there a lot of Nigerians learning Korean.

I know it's kind of marketing or catching the eyes but it depends ond their majors. It is hard to say all they are 1% top smart students.

Making that one girl say Czech was not fair. Even native English speakers can't pronounce it right. 😔🤔

It's funny how Korean keep focusing on accent. It really doesn't matter as long as others can understand you And the frenzy of having English name. Like why? I know the main purpose is because westerners have difficulty in pronouncing the names but still not necessarily.

Don't you think it makes more sense to give the free app to people who need it most? You should have given the app to people who score under 70%, not over 70%.
