In this episode we catch up with Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Florida Co-Chair of the Southeast Chapter, Richard Martinez, to walk about the strategies he uses to be successful hunting Osceola turkeys in Florida. Osceola Turkeys are not like other species of Turkey in North America as they are generally a bit smaller, have shorter beard, but are known for their longer spurs and their irridescent green and red hues in their feathers. Along with the Eastern Turkey, Merriam's Turkey, and Rio Grande Turkey the Florida Turkey makes up the National Wild Turkey Federation's Grand Slam. Since it is only found in the southern reaches of Florida, it has the smallest distribution of any turkey species in North America, leading to Florida's popularity among hardcore turkey hunters. One might even say the Osceola Turkey is one of Florida's natural treasures, and as Florida hunters we have the greatest opportunity to hunt them! BUT... it is not easy; Danny and I have been trying for a couple years now and we are determined to make it happen. Hopefully, with the help of Richard's insights we will get our first Osceola!
