I was requested to make a fiddle tutorial for how to play Tam Lin, so here it is! I am a little awkward talking to the camera, but hopefully it's still useful. I tried to go over the tune slowly so we can all learn the notes by ear! =)
Quick Links:
Demonstration: 0:24
A Part: 1:55
A Part Run-Through: 6:04
B Part: 7:22
B Part Run-Through: 10:31
Extra B Part Ideas: 11:01
Entire Tune Played Slowly: 12:47

Sheet Music:
General Tune Version Link (Click on the "Sheet Music" button below the ABC format; There's also a midi file!)

PDF sheet music for the version I play in my other "Tam Lin" video can be found here: katyadelson.com/music/
This is the first tutorial I've ever made, and I hope it's helpful! I feel a little awkward being an amateur making a tutorial, but it's all for fun! =)
Thank you for watching! I hope you have fun practicing! =D

At 67 yrs old I am learning the fiddle. These tutorials are super helpful as I play by ear. I have been playing bass, guitar and mandolin for many years so I have developed a good ear. Thanks so much!

+James Williams Yay! I'm happy that you can play it! =) Once the fingers know where the notes are, then the speed part comes with practice. : D I think I might make a video about how to practice playing the tunes faster... I've been getting a lot of questions about how to do that...

Katy, huge thanks for this tutorial! Just what I've been looking for. Great that you go nice and slow for us beginners. Also good that you're teaching these songs by ear as that's how they were traditionally passed down isn't it...Plus I'm rubbish at reading music :) You're a natural teacher....Many thanks from England.

@Paul Hurst, I don't have a reply button for some reason, so I'll post a comment here... Thank you! I'm glad it's helpful! =) I'm amazed at people who can read sheet music so effortlessly -- there's so much information and stuff going on in each little measure! I still think there is a lot to music that can't be written down very easily, and I really prefer learning tunes by ear.. I feel like they are so much easier to remember if they are learned by ear! ^_^ Thank you for watching!

Thanks for the reply Katy. The reply button thing might be something weird I've managed to set on my youtube by accident :-) Can't wait to get home from work today and start learning part b. Keep them coming please. Really appreciate your hard work doing these tunes for us. Real fun tunes. :-)

***** I agree, it's far easier for me to learn by ear. I can read music but quit bothering ages ago. The fiddle seems to lend itself to ear learning, especially the traditional tunes.

This is really an excellent way to learn. I am playing fiddle for the second day and already putting this song together. Please, keep the videos coming.

Another doodle to make it interesting: After I've done all the repetitions of the parts of this song that I want to do, I end the B part on a double stop with the A on the G string and the double open Ds and I hold the second one out to get a nice, deep finish. Thank you for this video; I found it extremely helpful and easy to follow. Also, your tone is superb! I spent my Christmas holiday learning this song and I am excited to keep learning it and improving it as time goes on. Merry Christmas to you and happy 2017!

Thanks for this awesome tutorial, Katy. I began learning to play the violin May 2020 with a very cheap VSO from eBay and upgraded to my German-made violin in October. I am loving this song so much. I'm going to start working on it without my teacher knowing and surprise him one day. One day far into the future. I always love to play Aires and waltzes so this will be a sweet surprise. You are explaining it so well. I play piano by ear and read music as well so this is how I pick out songs on the piano. I can see how you love to play. Thank you. ~B

Amazing lesson, thank you, thank you! I learned a simpler version of the tune by ear, but being new to Irish music, didn't understand how to do any of the little Irish-y things... you explained and simplified them so well! I can't wait to go home to play it!
@KatyAdelson
@KatyAdelson 8 лет назад
+Corin Stedman Yay! I hope it helped a little! =) I'm still learning the Irish-y doodles too... I've picked up a lot of ideas about where to place them in a tune from listening to recordings. I've noticed that artists tend to squeeze the triplet roll things in on repeated notes or notes that are held slightly longer in the tune, but the grace-note flicks and slides tend to pop up pretty much anywhere. I feel like slides into notes tend to sound a little more Irish, and note flicks tend to sound a little more Scottish... I guess there's really no wrong way to add little ornaments, so I think we can just have fun with experimenting with them! lol! ^^

Thank you Katy! I started playing violin today again after some months of pause and I was scared that I couldn't play it anymore... When I heard you playing the tune at the beginning of the video I thought something like "...And you call this a beginner lesson!? I can never play this!!" but with my great surprise I learnt the tune quite easily, thank to your clear (and overwhelmingly amusing) explanation. I find much easier to learn music by ear, and I also realize that it helps me a lot with the intonation. Paddy on the Turnpike is going to be the next! You are a wonderful teacher and I'm glad I found your videos. Thank you again from Sicily!
@KatyAdelson

Eppur si muove Yay! I'm glad it helped you learn the tune!! =) I know what it's like to take a break from music.. A big reason why I started posting videos was because I had stopped playing for about 5 years.. =/ Posting stuff on the internet forced me to start practicing again! Picking up the violin after a break can be a bit frustrating, but I'm glad that this helped you start playing again! =) I find it easier to learn tunes by ear, too! I used to go to several fiddle sessions, and the teachers would always play the tunes nice and slow for us to learn them. Those tunes are the ones I've never forgotten how to play! I'm hoping these videos will sort of re-create that experience for fiddlers! =)

Actually, thanks...because you're the second person I ever heard or saw playing this tune. The first time I heard it I liked it and have been playing it for years, but the B part had these awful awkward ornaments that I always dreaded playing the B part. However, I liked the tune so much I played it anyway. YOU"RE version has more melodic lines in the B part, and that's what I'm going to play tomorrow night at my gig. Unfortunately, I had a hard time picking up what you were doing on the fiddle because I couldn't take my eyes off your gorgeous blue ones. I'd listen to whatever you'd say to me.

Great lessons. Really enjoyable, and of course love that accent you have. Top of the morning to you, or night :) I sort of read music, but I"m trying to play by ear ,but on second thoughts I think I will settle for a bow somewhat easier to use. :) I noticed most traditional music seems to be played quickly I wonder if there are tunes that work well when played slower? I am looking for slow and happy. And yes talking to a camera can be hard. Your doing great.

+Evan Hurtado Awesome! Cello! =) I've been trying to teach myself how to play the cello - it's a very pretty instrument. : D I tried playing this on the cello, but I thought it was like 10 times harder than the violin! : o Violinists have it a little easier with all the notes really close together on the fingerboard. I''m glad that my video still helped! =) Happy cello-ing! (I wish that was a word..lol!) ^_^

You are, by far, the best person I've ever had to exceptional luck to see, Katy. I do not play violin, I play piano, but my heart entirely belongs to it. My ex-girlfriend did let me try her violin a day, and I was just astonishingly amazed, and sad by how much I missed on such a wonderful and melodious instrument. I do also play guitar (both only by ear, for ten years or so, but I can read and play classical on sheets pretty fluidly), and feel violin would be easy to get into! Any suggestions? Thank you so, so much! You're amazing!
