In this video I am demonstrating the Tama Starphonic Rolled Brass Snare Drum. This is a fantastic snare drum that comes with some really cool and innovative hardware, along with beautiful tone and feel.
The drum is rolled Brass, 6" x 14", and 1.2mm thick with perfect bearing edges. The ratchet style throw-off with its precision adjustments will get you perfect tension of your snappy snares, even under extreme settings. The best and most unique hardware features of the Tama Starphonic snare drum are the Freedom Lugs and grooved hoops. You do not have to take the tension rods all the way out of the lugs to change the drum heads. Just a few turns of the tension rods is enough to back them off the of the grooved hoop, making head changes a breeze.
The Tama Starphonic PBR146 Rolled Brass Snare Drum is a great sounding, very versatile snare that would be a great addition to any drum kit.

Anytime I am thinking of buying drums I go straight to Nick and also Sweetwater. Nick is a great drummer and has the skills to make a shitty old entry level kit sound good. Love his revues.

Now that's a nice brass snare! For anyone on a smaller budget though I can't recommend the Pork Pie Big Black Brass enough, very similar performance to this Tama to my ears minus the freedom lugs and fancy throwoff. Either way I think anyone needs to try a nice brass drum once in their life.

I sold my BOB for this snare. The Starphonic is not as in your face as metal Ludwigs etc but is very versatile They are great playing soft and emphasise ghost notes and react being hit hard for rock sets. It is good acoustic but powers through a PA.

In the video Mr. D'Virgilio claims the shell is rolled brass. I've read elsewhere that it's not rolled brass, but made from a sheet that's bent and seamed together. Any clarification on this topic? Thanks!

Sorry, confused bent with spun. The main question I have is whether or not it's truly seamless. I don't think it is but I'll probably still get one given how low of a price Sweetwater is selling them for! Everyone needs a brass snare, and I haven't gotten one yet...freedom lugs!

Copeland snare is 5" with 1.5mm brass . The starphonic is 6" with 1.2 mm brass.

@soulmalia It's still great. But I've since aquired a Black Beauty and a 14 x 6.5 Supraphonic. Supraphonic with die-cast hoops is one of my favorites. If you want a seriously badass brass snare the Tama John Tempesta is my recommendation. All the prices went up so there isn't as much of a price difference as there use to be.

Hi Kareem, I used a Remo coated Ambassador for the top and the bottom was the resonant head that came with the drum. Take care, Nick

The problem with those freedom lugs is like every other drum manufacture out there ,in 5 or ten years you will be unable to get parts. You know those little flanged hooks are going to break. It's just a matter of time. Tams should just ship with regular diecast and forget the gimmick.

The hooks seem die-cast to me. I wonder if one would be able to use hooks of traditional single-flange hoops with these. I'm more concerned about the lug inserts falling out, I wonder if they're captive somehow or if they just come out the side of the lug casing without the tension rod done in?
