Water is life. Water is information. If the large water cycle of a landscape is intact, then the land, nature, the economy and the people are flourishing. Desertification, floods, the rising sea level, forest fires and droughts are not fate but the result of a disturbed hydrologic balance.
Nowadays water is dammed, deviated, privatized and turned into a commodity. One billion people on the planet are without access to clean drinking water, while others are following their profit motive. It is in our hands to change this.
The large water cycles can be restored, even in extremely damaged landscapes. All around the world, people are working on solutions for the global water crisis. They are protecting rivers, lakes and wells. While applying different methods, they are following the same principle: collecting and decelerating rain water where it falls on the earth. In this way, the earth's body can absorb the rain water, the groundwater level rises and the land can become fertile again. The example of Tamera shows how a decentralized and natural water retention landscape can heal a disturbed landscape and create the prerequisites for modern subsistence.

"Mismanagement by human beings can be corrected by human beings". Excellent mantra. Land should be exploited, but in a sustainable way. Over exploitation and putting nothing back is the key to land degradation and unsustainable agriculture. People learning to be true stewards of the land and resources is long over due.

its really very easy and simple, all our earth needs is her skin back. her skin is what retains the water in place

And replant native forests where they originally were before we removed them. Ireland was 70% forests and is now less than 1%.

What did life, that first gained this plane of existence on Earth, consume when once bloomed. Conceived. Moon yourself. No. Aim yourself at the moon. Add the following ingredients. Gravity, water, and atmosphere. There! You have perspective of that bedroom, the culture dish, that life form was birthed into. Life NEVER started by itself. Or your fart is only apart of you, LOST!!! Ever!

Wonderful. And like Findhorn and other communities evolving for the future and for the planet, too few people know about them and what they are doing. I am grateful that this has been posted.

David Montgomery's book "Growing a revolution..." provides the recipes for regenerative agriculture, in most growing zones. Forget sustainable we must regenerate first, and it can be done!

This is a lovely vision, but why not cut some of those long lingering shots of dragonflies and some of the interviews and instead tell us what is involved in creating a water retention landscape?

Danica Stone google "Water is life" video. there, it is nicely explained what was involved, how it was created, and by which principles. Sepp Holzer is a genius! ;)

Core approach -- don't line the base of the dam, allow base & walls to remain permeable so groundwater seeps and flows into surroundings thus increasing landscape moisture levels!

Try watching videos of Geoff Lawton on RU-vid. Search for Permaculture, Silvopasture, Regenerative Agriculture, Ecological Agriculture and Holistic Land Management. And no: "holistic" is not about anything mystic. I know you asked this question 6 years ago but this is for those who are asking today. :)

All human activity and habitat becoming environmentally beneficial is the key to our sustainable and hugely prosperous future. We keep being shown, sustainable practice makes far better economic sense. So what's the betting there's a market solution?

From some Environmental Department, or the local Government Council, maybe; bureaucracy is everywhere.

From the government, which seems to me quite reasonable...you can't just go around digging wells and building dams - what if you stop the water from running to your neighbour's land ?...what if you change the course of water streams ? This is not an individual issue, where each person decides what to do with a wider national resource, like water...I remember a "dispute" between Portugal and Spain, because Spain was building a dam and this would risk the water supply to Portugal, since, with a couple of exceptions, all Portuguese rivers have their source in Spain. You just can't decide individually what to do with the water that runs through your land. Just google "Are you allowed to build a dam in your property ?" and you'll see how far you can go without a license...if you wish to irrigate, things will change //-))

I don't know if they got permission or not. One thing what I know is no water was running through the land. You can see that from the pictures taken before the project. It is all rain water they collected by digging. The place was almost a desert. Imagine if more individuals would do the same in their land. I live in greece, the climate is similar to Portugal's, we too have dry areas specially in the south. The last 2 years there has been so much rain during the winter in those places and all the water run to the sea. Imagine having having few tameras here. We could have water supply for the whole summer just from the winter rains. .
