Tamiya Extra Thin Cement And Tamiya Airbrush cleaner - The Truth
So we test the Theory That Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner and Tamiya Extra Thin Cement are the same product and do the Same Thing!! Cement plastic Together!! Tamiya Cement is a go to product for Model Kit Builders so its only worth testing the theory that tamiya airbrush cleaner can glue plastic parts together just as well as tamiya extra thin cement...

here is my recipe for thin cement, which works exactly like Tamiya.... 50% lacquer thinner + 50% Acetone this will have much less odor than cellulose thinner/ lacquer thinner on its own, and less odor than Tamiya thin cement... the acetone facilitates fast clean evaporation, with some solvent power, the lacquer thinner is the stronger solvent that melts the plastic. enjoy ;O)

Saw the chemical breakdown of the two compared. They were 'near' identical. Not exact but so close its safe to call them the same. Recently they seem to have gone up in price a bit and are increasingly hard to get in the UK - probably because people realised they can use it to top up their more expensive Tamiya extra thin bottles. The cheapest I can get one delivered is around £20 including shipping. I did have a look about for any other similar products that were cheaper or more available though, and one that looks promising is Mr Hobby Tool Cleaner. This also appears to be a mix of butyl acetate and acetone, but I found it for around £14 delivered for a 400ml bottle. That works out at I'm going to pull the trigger on some and see how well it works - I'm at a hobby fair tomorrow with lots of trade stands so hopefully one of them has a bottle - if not though I'm going to keep an eye out for other similar products.

If you glue up, before fitting the parts together, use normal Tamiya cement. The Extra Thin and Airbrush cleaner, is used by capillary reaction, hold the parts together, and add the Extra Thin / Airbrush cleaner to the small gap. This is only for use with pats that fits perfect together. If there are some gaps, use normal cement.

Where I live although some chemicals are regulated you can still get a liter of acetone for around £2 and Butyl acetate for £10. That makes 2 liters of airbrush cleaner/extra thin cement for £12. Ethyl Acetate is around the same £10 and MEK around £20 that would make 2.5 liters of quick type for £20 with some MEK leftover. I heard about this before and I like the idea very much, but there's a much cheaper method. I use plain acetone (1 litre, 5 €), fill it into an empty Tamiya Extra Thin bottle and add Styrofoam ("fluffy" styrene) till I got the consistancy I want. Of course, you want to use it carefully, because acetone could "eat" the styrene parts. The styorfoam helps with welding the parts together and makes the acetone less aggressive. One litre of acetone is 25 times the amount of one bottle of Tamiya Extra Thin. So I save 120 €.

I bought Tamiya Airbrush cleaner and when I smelled it I thought, That smell is familiar to me. It smells the same as the glue. and the packaging says "melts plastic" So I tried sticking a piece of plastic on another piece of plastic and it stays rock solid. and very quickly too. so now i have 250ml glue.

Abiously acetone, butylacetate, ethylacetate, butanon and xylene that is often used in lacquer thinner is often used in plastic cements since they melt plastic. However its not the same even tho they have the same ingridients. Plastic cement has a thickener to it. Butyl acetate is the strong banana smell in the glue/cleaner I use Thinner nr 5 to clean my airbrush as its pure butyl acetate the best solvent and its not so dangerous.

If you buy Correction Fluid thinner (IF you can find it!@!) it also has the same ability to be used as a liquid cement with polystyrene parts. The difference between all 3 of them is the specific additives used in each, which varies. All I really care about is if it works at it's stated use. When building models to enter into competition, practically all my model buddies don't use the old thick stuff. It can deform small parts. It can ooze out of joints causing extra work to clean it up. It cures slowly causing parts to misalign. I learned this from watching the experts build their models. Made sense to me. Happy modeling! ✌️🙂

I’ve tried to post the MSDS information from the Tamiya Germany website, but that comment keeps disappearing. They are not identical, but essentially so, to within 1% of each other. I've no idea why that is. Maybe it's more defensible to market them as two different products when they are recorded as being of a slightly different composition. Tamiya Extra Thin (TET) cement:

Hi Tim - you are spot on the MSDS would show what chemicals are present, in what relative proportion. And it should dictate what they have to put on the label. The same two chemical entities. They'd need an HPLC to tell the difference between 51%/49% and 49%/51%.

To save even more, just buy acetone or even lacquer thinner, whichever is cheaper. Butyl acetate has a higher boiling point, so I guess it is in there to extend the drying time....
