Wow that motor and shock swap turned this little buggy into a performer
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 9 месяцев назад
Yes! It turns it into a completely different animal! It was cute and fun before before but after it was really a ton of fun and complete ripper! It now has a Bob Ross driver head in there and that was the icing on the cake!

@@AddamsPlayground thanks for replying, I had the original back in 1980 and loved it, I have my re-release built but really not a fan of those friction shocks so have not run it yet. Think I will wait and get the oil shocks before trying it.
@AddamsPlayground

@@DOBERSTAFFIE It is very hoppy with the friction shocks and bounds around similar to a grasshopper. It really drives nice and some with the oil shocks on it, rides like a proper rc buggy should!

It is a nice lazy fun driver out of the box but toss on some oil filled shocks and a spicier motor and it turns into on heck of a racer! They are a pretty good bargain and only takes the shocks and motor to make it really a ripper!

Completely worth it! The shocks are a night and day difference in being able to drive it well. Previously it would bounce around and buck all over making it difficult to drive and go where you want it to. Now it just goes and with the faster motor it goes there fast! Yeah, man, it wheelies! Forget about all that being responsible, ha ha! And even those drive cups and dogbones are plastic, they're actually really tough, they're the same as they're using on the DT-03, on mine they're doing just fine. I did break one but that was on a TT-02B... Yeah on the shocks!
@AddamsPlayground

I am sure they will hold up fine, I will just keep an eye on them. The motor swap was not intentional but what I had that would work and I am glad it went this way as it is a ton of fun to drive now!!! The shocks are by far the best upgrade and certainly one I would recommend to anyone getting the the kit! The motor swap is also one that helps add a lot of fun! Hi Addam nice HB ;) I live the DT02 buggy’s my fav Tamiya buggy, I’ve raced these in an all make series and against better machinery and for what they are you can get them to go very well. Another essential upgrade is to brace the front shock tower with a piece of carbon or alloy if need be. The front tower bulkhead is the 02s big weak spot. The gearbox is pretty much indestructible on these buggy’s and it will happy take up to 10.5 brushless motor but not much more as it starts to over power the chassis. If you go back through my video archive I’ve done a few videos on the DT02 chassis and what you can do to them. Take care ;)
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 года назад
Thanks and thanks for the tip for the front end, I will take a look and see what I can find to brace that up. I am really happy with it now. I was going to pretty much be a shelf queen but after the shocks and motor upgrade I will be driving it much more often now!!! I just wasn't happy with the bouncing about prior but now that it is smooth and can actually put the power down down it is a great runner!

Thanks, it is a ton more fun now. The shocks made a huge difference and allowed that power to get to the ground. Otherwise it is way too hoppy/bouncy to be running a fast motor. I had not planned on going with the GT Tuned but glad it worked out as it is a whole new animal! Thanks for stopping by and checking in!
@UncleBobsRC
@UncleBobsRC 2 года назад
Agree Addam, sometimes too much power hurts (as I say, more speed, the more parts break). However, your combo seems to fit very well, as you said. I also agree that the Tamiya standard yellow shock oil is "heavy" (400 CST), that's somewhere around 33wt oil. I've yet to build my Holiday Buggy but I think box stock is fine with me. Awesome video man, great run!!!!! BTW, I know you like the Losi Mini-T, or at least had one or two, have I got something to show you!!!
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 года назад
I built a lot of them with the stock oil but recently started with the thinner oils and they work so much better. Steve from @Shen RC convinced me to try them. For the flat top shock pistons I will use the 10wt and ones with holes in the pistons I will use 15wt or 20wt depending on the hole size. I build one and see how it feels and can adjust before building the rest. You can know out the holiday buggy in two nights. Start with painting the roof, the driver, and the jerry cans. While they are drying you can build the chassis and then work on the stickers. I strongly recommend not doing the fender stickers dry, please for you sanity use soapy water or Windex one those! You will not find them fun trying to put them on without help and being able to slide them around! I am very interested to see what you have coming up! I was driving my Mini-B around the other day in the basement since it was raining/snowing and I was not going out in that mess to play with anything! Looking forward to seeing what goodies you got!!

I decided on an hpi racing 15 turn motor and a tamiya 17t pinion. If I have to space it I’m gonna do exactly what you did and use some shock pistons 😁 got the motor, waiting on the pinion
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 года назад
It works as a temp fix but would not run it too long with the motor spaced out. Too much crude into the gear box and there will be some movement affecting the gear mesh. But in a pinch to get it running it worked well for me!! The Tamiya motors and their short motor shafts!!!
@IowaBudgetRCBashers

@@AddamsPlayground hoping since I got the Tamiya pinion I won’t have an issue. I could always have my brother make a spacer on the lathe. The shaft looks longer on the hpi motor, so I guess we will see 😁

It is a really easy build and it seems to handle really well with the oil filled shocks on there. Previously it was bouncapolooza and was not as much fun. It makes you laugh for a while but it gets old as it bucks out sideways and causes problems and all I began to hear instead of wee..wee..wee..weee..we from bouncing it was ouch...ouch...ouch...ouch from the driveline! I think I got the shock set for $25-30 so well worth the price for the improvement of the handling! Thanks as always for stopping by and checking in!!!

This one drives very similar to the grasshopper stock! The shocks and faster motor really turned it into a completely different animal now! I have both of the hoppers and drive my Hopper II a lot, it is one of my most driven cars. If you love the Grasshopper look at getting the Neo Fighter, it is another inexpensive kit but comes with oil filled shocks and a sport tuned motor in the kit. It is a good looking buggy that performs well! Thanks for stopping by and checking in!

@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 года назад
It is fun out of the box but the 540 motor make it more fun! That also increases the bouncing so the shocks are a really great upgrade and a Sport Tuned motor would be good enough but the GT Tuned really made it a blast to drive. It also does not stick out as much so you don't see the big silver can hanging out of the transmission which I like too. That was a happy accident but I am glad it worked out this way as it is a lot of fun now! Thanks for stopping by and checking in!!

Yah gotta love the Tamiya Holiday Buggy, i really love them along with the Tamiya CCO1, I always love the underdog. You can make it look like the original one at the front by tinkering with the top shock ball ⚽️, lower it a wee bit, cut off the top of the front shock mount and fill in the two holes in the front of the body.

Nice! GT tuned is nothing for this chassis the DT02 is strong and those plastic dog bones are stronger than you think I ran brushless and 15T motors in mine and bashed them good they are one of the best bashing RC's there is out super tough for a tamiya. I do hate the tamiya motors they have the shortest shaft ever don't know why but it's not good for some applications that's for sure! Nice one! I am curious as to what you used to mount the 540 can? Thanks
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 года назад
It is an option to use the 540 in the kit. You just need the Tamiya 18 tooth pinion gear. I used a different brand and I was forced to use the GT Tuned motor due to the shaft on the other not being long enough. If you get the Tamiya pinion you can use the other motors like the stock style silver can, torque tuned or sport tuned. I had cheated prior with having to space the other motor out with a few old shock pistons as a shim! I wouldn't recommend it for a long term mounting solutions it will allow for dust and dirt to get into the trans and could allow for flexing when bouncing around and could increase gear wear from mesh changes.

With the motor, pinion and shocks it puts it up there with most of the other buggies. I think the looks alone set it apart and it looks very cool running around. What are the specifications of the pinion gear you used? I'm putting a Tamiya super stock bz in my holiday buggy and cannot find a pinion that fits.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Год назад
For the Tamiya pinion it is either 54628 for the 17 tooth or 54629 for the 29 tooth one. For a Robinson or other brand steel pinion you will need a 32 pitch or mod 08 (they are interchangeable) in either a 17 or 19 tooth. I am pretty sure that one has the longer motor shaft, the stock, sport and torque tuned motors all have shorter shafts preventing me from running the longer steel pinions on those.

Hey mate how did you get your rear guards to sit better
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground Год назад
Hi Jim, Those were made with brute force and trial and error! I had made them years ago when working in a cabinet shop and we had scraps of aluminum plate left over from a project. The rear guard on the Stampede was the hardest one but I took a strip and made it fit the mounting holes first and then cut and trimmed it to fit nicely and then started to bend it around the transmission and motor plate. I used an old piece of steel pipe to bend it around and beat it into the shape it needed to be. Lots of trimming, filing and fitting! there was some CAD work done (Cardboard Assisted Design!!) but mostly just beating, banging and sanding it into submission!!!
