Tamiya Wild Dagger 

I had one back in the day. It wasn't fast stock, but two 12 turn motors woke it up. It was related closely to the TL01 chassis and a lot of parts would fit. I converted mine to 4 wheel steering and made a plate aluminum chassis with extended wheelbase along with bigger tires. Fun truck.

Had a Twin Detonator. Sold it a short time ago. Original restoration project for me. Sprayed it box art blue. I agree about the colour, I never thought it suited and my feelings regarding this model are much the same as yours. Used with 2 standard cans, moved at steady speed, felt like it was glued to the floor. Fun to drive though but that's Tamiya for you. Fun, fun, fun. I recently restored a Kyosho Peugeot 205 with yellow and green design. Those colours will look great on that. ATB Darren.

I had this kit, I bought it for £120 and tinkered with it for years until I stripped it for parts and sold it on Ebay. This chassis is very sought after and I actually made profit. If they re-released this I’d buy it again in a heart beat. The WR-01 chassis was legendary. 👌🏼

I've got the 2wd variant. They are a brilliant chassis. Plenty fast enough with the right motor

Super cool. Looking forward following your WD. I’ve had the Wild Dagger including hop-ups ready for an ‘update/upgrade’ for a couple of years now. Gonna go another road. Extended shocks and towers, Hobbywing ESC, RC4WD dual motors etc. And some non-Tamiya tires. Everything’s been sitting for years now waiting. Not sure why I haven’t started yet. But just got the 20T steel pinions. The original I bought was “stolen” for my WT-01’s ☺️ You really need the pinions if you want some speed, stock gear ratio is 18:1, and I think I measured mine to below 20 kph with the 18T pinions and silver cans). Plan is to start the project as soon as possible. It’s not gonna end up as a Wild Dagger though ☺️ Love the WD body though. Just need something new. Well, the Mighty Bull etc. isn’t a WR-01. Well, sort of a WR-01, but a 2WD version. It’s called a WT-01. They removed the front gear box/motor. Lot’s of cool 2WD models there too. Blackfoot Xtreme, Blackfoot III, Mud Blaster II etc etc. Uhh, sorry, about the rant. Could go on forever. The WR/WT-01 is one of my favorite topics 😅☺️

Nice, I received the car from a collegae as a not runner. The body has been painted on both sides and the mechanical speed controller resistor got overheated and melted a part of the frame. Tires were shot and gearbox broken. Bought all new parts and costed more than I was willing to invest in it but it runs now. Added a new ESC, tires, BB, new repro stickers from MCIRacing and cheap oil shocks. It's a nice truck but when going to fast it will flip. Also added a quick release latch for the battery as that one was also missing.

love your videos as always and am a huge tamiya fan, normally i am a tamiya purest , don't change anything , but I have a few of these models one wild dagger with tmaxx shocks way big improvement and 1.9 axial bead lock wheels with flat iron tires absolutely love this setup jumps and handles really well with fair amount of speed and better torque the other one even better,,, read next comment

This is a fine truck I bought one for my 7 year old son 20 years ago and he couldn’t break it it’s took everything thrown at it... there’s no terrain it can’t handle and it’s easy to get speed out of... the twin motors share the torque so it’s gentle on batteries and speed controllers I’ve recently rebuilt mine after 20 years use and it only required a chassis (cracks only) but I treated it to a couple of gearboxes just because they were scratched I ballraced ours, acoms AT5 speed controller, oil filled shocks, and put the stock armatures in modified cans... it’s ideal for kids and abusers

Cracking truck Glenn buddy. Owned the duel hunter myself. Loved it! The Bush devil 2 I own now is on a very similar chassis but only uses the one motor for RWD. Really looking forward to seeing the end result. Yellow sounds cool aswell! Enjoy the build matey and keep up the good work. 😊😊

i bought one but modded it like crazy. It shares a lot of parts with the TL-01 if you are looking for upgrades. I went crazy with mine and added 2 titan motors and two batteries by cutting a hole higher up in the chassis. It is crazy how fast it goes. i need to replace the wheels though mine sat in a container for years and the tires have flat sides on them now.

I had a TL01b looks like they used a lot of this truck in its build. Defo the uprights hubs and A-arms. Had brushless motor and speed gear set and it was untill recently the fastest RC Ive ever had. Standing backflips on 3s

I actually owned one of these in late 2000. It was a great "little" truck and it was quite fast! It could climb well too and handled the off road stuff really well! Glad you got one yourself my friend! I'd suggest swapping out the shocks for dampers and inserting two sport tuned motors on slightly larger pinion, for even higher tarmac speeds, though the manual speed controllers might get a bit hot, but who cares! lol! I’ve literally just given my mate mine today, because of the lockdown he wanted something to do. It’s still working but needs some new tyres as they’re cracked and a new battery as well the speed controller setting up. He’s over the moon. Think he’ll be surprised how agile and nippy it is.

I think those wheels will work fine with yellow. In fact, probably a perfect colour.

I had one of these back in the day it was ok, it really needed a twin battery mod the run time with the batteries back then was pretty average. But still a fun little truck to run

as I said before the other one is actually the blackfoot iii which uses the same chassis but in 2wd, loved the original black foot but wished it was 4x4, so i added the front gearbox ,yellow wheels and original tires to create the first 4x4 blackfoot and it came out so awesome i about cried and it's on you tube for all to see, search TAMIYA BLACKFOOT III 4X4 on you tube to see, keep up the good work.

Interesting truck. I reckon gun metal flat grey would look boss to complement the wheels, plus the green decals would pop nicely. A bit like you relate the blue to Avante, yellow is the Lunchbox ;-)

The funniest thing is if you spin up one end the other wheels turn a little as well as the motor works as a generator 😁

Hello Glenn hope alls good mate! I was just watching this again as l just picked up a twin Detonator! Never even knew it existed! The early 2000 still brings up surprises to me as it wasn't untill 2008 when l came back to the hobby! I did see this video back when you originally did it! I remembered you had a Wild Dagger and wondered if you knew about the Twin Detonator but you did/do because at the beginning of the video you mentioned the other 3 on this chassis! Anyway here is the best bit l picked the Detonator up for £37 delivered on a buy it now! Bargain! Used condition but tidy enough! Plus in boxart haha l am a sucker for boxart as you are! I don't imagine you will see this comment but if you do l miss you pal lol you have left me with Keith droning on lol just kidding he is fantastic! But not a patch on you! Oh and paint it bright red like the old dyna blaster the decals you have would still work👍

I’m upgrading a Twin Detonator ATM, to compensate the low ratio I’m using 3650 5200kv motors. High KV will do the trick, I’ve ordered all the alloy & bearings. Using Robinson Racing .6 mod 20t steel pinion gears, two 60amp ESC’s, timing turned to 0. Set up for 2s 7.4v lipo battery. Just waiting for bearings & motors 😩 I have the rest, no point starting yet.

Fantastic truck, I have the double blaze with sport tuned motors and oil shocks, also full ball bearings in the gearboxes. I don’t run it, it’s a shelf queen since the is a vintage rig, and it’s unlikely Tamiya will ever rerelease this truck. If they do however, I would pick up another one!😎

Interesting truck. I’d never even heard of it so be great to see you get it running. I think with the colour of the decals yellow would look pretty cool. I’d leave the wheels as they will match the dark tray.

I think yellow and maybe a very small purple highlight somewhere would look great with the decals. But you definitely need to get a different color wheels. This was always one of my favorite ones because its different like so many things tamiya make.

I like the yellow body yellow wheels combo. FYI you can buy correct yellow wheels 😉 cool truck, look up Mad Bison wheels they have the same wheels and tires and body😁

These things can be made to go decently quick. I upgraded a Dual Hunter for my son. It’s very responsive because of the twin motors and pretty fast after I removed the stock motors and installed some lower turn Redcat 550s. I had to use hub extenders to fit the larger tires I’m using but it works great giving it a wider stance and faster speed. The gearboxes look like those preassembled parts used in many other Tamiya vehicles. They seem to be geared for torque which is why I was able to fit the bigger tires without overheating anything. I basically wanted to save the original body and tires so my son can play with it and not damage them. I used an inexpensive pre-painted generic body from eBay and a hobby wing dual ESC. My only complaint is the steering. The servo flexes a bit causing the vehicle to drive way or the other. I shimmed up the servo to keep it in place but I’m not really a fan of the steering setup on this kit.

My first RC car, and I loved it. Bought it at the same time with the Tamiya Raybrig NSX. No idea where these two cars are now. :(

Glenn you can get aftermarket long towers to run full length dampers. They are very good

I think the yellow would look great with either black wheels or maybe chrome. I would reduce the size of those body posts. I think I would upgrade the ESC and the suspension and maybe loose some of the plastic bits.

Such an odd thing. Just picked up a NIB Twin Detonator today. It's one of those oddities that one just needs to make a collection more complete. If you don' mind, the WR-01 is a misnomer, it's actually the WT-01 chassis. It's very much like a Clod in some ways. It actually shares the wheelbase with the Clod, and can run the Clod size wheels. If you use the 20T pinion, then it's actually not that slow 16.5:1 gearing with big wheels. So slightly taller than the Blackfoot chassis, but with two motors you get more rpm. With a few updates, it's shockingly good.

Hope you decided on the yellow. I would have left the wheels grey, as it actually gels with a bright yellow. I purchased a heavy abused twin detonator myself a few years back, and purchased a replacement wild dagger body. However, I didn’t care for it much, as the body looked a tad too small for the chassis, so I bought an Amarok body, which is amazingly scale and fits much better. I do admire your drive to keep it original though, as tamiya intended it.

How about a two-tone colour scheme and agree about boxart! I am a massive fan of boxart totally but must agree the blue just looks underwhelming on this truck! But as l was saying l think together blue and yellow would look great ....blue bottom yellow top half👍 or l think all silver or gunmetal would look awesome too! Great find that Gleen and bonus that body is clear and have the decals! Hopefully the gearbox will be an easy fix? l had one of these and lt was not the fastest but no slow coach but that was a long time back and l had sport tuned motors in it! The suspension was fun too! Not perfect but that's what made it fun! Great stuff mate👍

Definitely one of those hmmmm cars Tamiya has out there . I'm looking forward to seeing it with a different paint job than box, and curious to see it running! Always great to see you testing the " not so sure " cars. Gotta be careful though, that's how I ended up with a mad bull😂.

Gonna look sweet in yellow , need Blackfoot wheels to match maybe , or the monster beetle ones would match the gold decals maybe . I gotta say though ,there's only one dual motor monster for me .

Glenn if you decide to paint your wheels use an airbrush much better results than you had the last time you painted deep wheels trust me on this 30 years experience talking here sand with 400 then 600 prime then shoot several light coats of the color your using. Then when the paint cures shoot the clear.

I have never seen this truck before. Looks interesting! As for the colours, not a fan of yellow myself. My Avante Mk2 came with yellow wheels, that do not match anything else, unless it is throwback to the original Avante. I probly will paint them black.

Now I need this in my life. 🤷🏻‍♂️ at least i cant spend money on a new one

I have the twinn detonator it is a bit of a pain to maintain. I replaced the mechanical esc with an older tekin and it works great. It is no speed demon . Bearings are a must and the friction shocks give it a bouncy ride. I do like the truck it has a lot of character and it is fun to drive,

got one second hand- horrified by how little travel the dampers were- installed some long yellow CVA's and now has proper long travel, going to dig into the gearbox and have a look before running, but much better now with proper dampers

If you machine out one the motor mounts you should be abl to raise the gearing because it should be a pretty fast machine with a couple of high torgue BZ motors and a three cell lipo if it could fit.

I think the Top Force metallic green would work with those decals and leave the wheels stock? Interesting chassis especially with the two 540 motors!

Bit of a beast of a truck Glenn, haven't heard of this one before. How about an orange for the body colour? Pretty sure it would go with the wheels and decals maybe..

I now what you mean by gear noise i took out new restored super saber for a run the othe day and the difference in sound from the saber to my fully worked worked carbon fiber ally plasma edge is night and day the plasma is so smooth you can pretty much just hear the motor. The saber by contarst even with all new boomerang gears and bearings is pretty noisy.

I owned the Dirt Devil" in the early 2000's. 2wd version of this truck.

This one can be pretty quick. Had a run a week ago togheter with a friend who have one and it was mega quick, running brushless. So high speed, yeah it´s possible.

wonder if you could convert it to a buggy having 2 motors with ESCs you could do some fun things with breaking setups

I have always liked this truck but ive always been in to the tamiya trucks.. I think do this one as tamiya intended but yellow paint, I agree the blue does not suit this truck.. then build anouther but with the aluminium parts and compare.. you also need to do a Clod build, cannot belive you have never really driven one! ;)

I don't know if you have this truck finished yet as I'm watching the video I'm not too fond of the yellow but I do think it would be different and kind of cool and as for the rims I would go with maybe a platinum or charcoal gray but I really do think if you matched the green up with the decals and paint the wheels that color. I think would be pretty cool and very different

Two motors on a standard ni-cad battery? Brushless motors with a 2 cell I would say.

I prefer gear diff. I don't like ball-diff because I had many troubles with a Nissan King Cab RC truck.

If the chassis is mirrored front and back, could it be made 4 wheel steering? If you drove it with a 4 channel stick transmitter you could even get it going sideways!

Isn't the wt01 chassis sharing lots of parts with this ? It's pretty much just the rear gearbox & a different front end. I'd go for a proper esc like hobbywing wp880 for 3s lipo just too be sure really if you want too use a single esc. It will probably be too much voltage & current for the resistors too handle when you drive slower for 3s lipo but full tilt you can essentially run 4s lipo through the mechanical speed controller if you start at close too full speed. Also you could hook up two separate speed controllers & use a y servo plug into the receiver & cut off the red wire from one esc on the y splitter. (So you only get power from one esc into the receiver) or directly on the esc (ground + signal from both escs remaining intact + red on one esc.) Then hook up a splitter on the battery plugs so you plug in both esc's at the same time into a single battery. That's how they do it with multi engine rc planes with both brushed & brushless esc's. The signal too the escs is exactly the same after all even if there are multiple ones hooked up too a single channel.

Does that RC truck use gear diff or ball-diff?

You do the right set up you can get it to do it more than 20 miles an hour I'm pretty sure of that.
