The differences between these two XB (RTR) entry-level models are of course mainly visual. Both are based on the same chassis with the same suspension and damping (or rather, lack of damping), same standard 27T brushed 540 motor, same RWD transmission and 18T pinion. The only difference I found, apart from body and wheels, was the non-identical front body mounts.
In an aesthetic and historical perspective the visual difference is of course striking. The Tamiya Blackfoot III is the embodiment of the "return to the golden age". A very classic 1980s Monster Truck with a high raised Super Blackfoot (Ford) Body.
I really like the visual appearance of them both, but I must admit, having lived through the majority of the 1970s and 1980s, it is a special feeling to watch the Tamiya Blackfoot III, a classic 1980s majestic looking Monster Truck, on a run. On the other hand, the Mighty Bull body is a perfect wheel base match for the WT-01 and the low mounted lexan body provides a lot more opportunities for tarmac runs, speed upgrades and jumps (without the fear of wrecking an expensive and fragile hard body)
In another historical perspective it is also interesting, to notice the differences between the electronics supplied in an XB model from 2006 and another from 2012.
"XB" is the Tamiya terminology for an "eXpert Built" model, a factory built ready to run model. Pre-assembled and with original Tamiya electronics installed. While the Tamiya Blackfoot 3 XB, model 57825, is an XB version of the Tamiya Blackfoot 3 Assembly Kit, model 58498, from 2011, the Tamiya Mighty Bull XB, model 57727, is a stand alone XB model, with no kit version available.
The Tamiya Mighty Bull came with an ESC with a power supply and without BEC and with a 27 MHZ radio system with BEC. The Tamiya Blackfoot 3 came with an ESC with BEC and a 2.4 GHz radio system. Here is a complete comparison of the two systems:
Tamiya MIGHTY BULL XB 2006
- TEU-101BK ESC
- TSU-01 Servo
- TRU-01 Receiver
- 27T 540 Brushed Motor
- Expec TTU-03 27 MHz Transmitter
Tamiya BLACKFOOT III XB 2012
- TEU-105BK ESC
- TSU-03 Servo
- TRU-08 Receiver
- 27T 540 Brushed Motor
- Finespec TTU-08 2.4 GHz Transmitter
Both ESC's are rated at 60A and the specs of the servos are more or less the same. The real difference is the switch to the 2.4G radio system.
Well, hope you enjoyed the run and comparison. If you wish to see these two models "in raw" (no slow-motion, no editing, no music), 4K videos from the same day is coming up next week. These two short runs will give a more realistic impression of the the two models capabilities and speed.
