This lens looks very, very interesting! In my 6 years as a 7D series shooter, this is exactly the type of lens that I was missing. The build quality of the Canon EF-S 11-22 never matched the rugged 7D pro bodies. And one of my main reasons to choose the 7D series rather than the X0D series was weather sealing. If this lens performs optically and an attractive future 7D III comes along - this lens will be on my list. I absolutely love Canon for having almost identical controls on the 7D and 5D series. It made the switch very easy and the idea of having both bodies in the future much more attractive than owning a 5D series and a X0D series. Can't wait to hear what you find Dustin! Greetings, Dirk

Hey Dustin, how would you stack this up against the Tokina AT-X 11-20mm 2.8? Nikon shooter here on DX body, would primarily use this for landscapes, general wide shots, real estate, etc. and not sure if the wider aperture is needed in the Tokina. But since they are priced very similarly... which would you rate as the better value? More sharpness, etc.? Thanks in advance!

I noticed a metal ring on right side of the camera body (where we attach the neck strap), is that for attaching more than one neck strap or hand strap or combination? if yes, where can I find one for 5DM4 as I use neck strap and hand strap.

That's just a key ring. I use that for quickly attaching the safety strap when I use my Cotton Carrier harness system.

If the 10-24 works on FX in full FX mode from 14-24, would it make a good lens on full frame in general? I wonder whether you could run some tests using it on Canon full frame maybe against the 15-30. It may be an inexpensive FX solution for my D610 and still be great on my D7100.

Do you think it's possible to upload a video of showing the AF during video mode - how quick it is - and then showing how quiet it is? I know you talked about it in this video, but it'd be nice to see how quiet it actually is when there isn't any other sound to be heard. Fantastic video! What I like about the lens is how it's got the bigger focal length and wider aperture of the Canon 10-22mm, and has the VC (IS) of the Canon 10-18mm. Looking forward to the IQ review!

I guess this question has already been partly answered, but how does it optically compare to Canon's two lenses, the 10-18 & 10-22 - in terms of sharpness/clarity and flare. Is it worth the extra cost? Given the higher price point I would take the better build quality and more useful zoom range as given. Thanks.

Your reviews are great. Please keep them coming. As for this lens, I've been considering the Canon's 16-35 L (either 2.8 ii or 4 w/ IS) but this lens looks like it might better compliment my APS-C Canon and give me truer wide angle capabilities more similar to what the 16-35 would on a full frame camera. Also, I have the 24-70 L and a 70-200 L f/4s, so this focal length wouldn't give me unnecessary overlap. Would you agree? Also, interested to hear your first impressions of the image quality vs. Canon's L lens. I have the Tamron 45mm (thanks to your review) and I've been very satisfied, but I know this isn't the "SP" lineup. Thanks again.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
You'll be intrigued by my image quality and review episode coming on Monday, then. I do think that a dedicated APS-C macro lens is probably a better option for the kit you describe. 10mm = 16mm on crop, but 16mm = 25.6mm on crop, which isn't very wide.

@bobbeck1869

I was pretty much sold on the Tamron, but then I heard reviews that bashed the noise level and weight. I was hoping the lens would give much better performance in lower light. My goal was to use this lens on trips to Disney World where I could get some landscape shots of the castle, buildings, take the lens closer when doing shots with characters, etc...the lower light would be indoors with characters and landscape shots at night. I know with a DSLR there is no one lens magic which is why I bought the 24mm and 50mm prime lenses to go with my 18-55mm kit and 55-250mm telephoto zoom. The 18-55 was just not wide enough to get the shots I wanted, but it did do very well indoors. I pretty much used my nifty fifty for extreme low light and on rides. it worked great! Thank you!

Dustin Abbott im sointeresed sir since im shooting more landscapes nowadays and the canon 10-18 stm is gnarly at manual focusing
@marksoukup1267
@marksoukup1267 7 лет назад
Aldrin Detablan - I agree. I just returned the Canon 10-18 IS STM after renting it for a working vacation I went on recently. It was my first time shooting wider than 18mm on APS-C (Canon 70D). In general, it was a fun little lens to shoot with, and the image quality was fine for the price of the lens, but the auto focus speed and lock on in medium-low light situations definitely could've been better. Even aiming at a light-dark split subject with single point or in live view didn't always work. I'm guessing it's due to the f4.5 aperture which hampers the search capability. Luckily, I could just aim and lock on something bright and recompose and know that everything would be in focus due to the wide angle FOV. As for manual focusing it, like you mentioned, I never tried it. I'm not that crazy about manually focusing any of my Canon STM lenses (I have 4 of them). I'm guessing the Tamron will fare better for auto focus seek and lock on thanks to a 2/3 stop brighter aperture over the Canon. Manual focusing I'm sure will also be better.
@aldrindetablan4358
@aldrindetablan4358 7 лет назад
Mark Soukup yes sir the manual focusing could be better but its just a pain to use these stm lenses..if only the have a focus window the it could be handled or like that of the new 70-300 nano usm..

the 16-35f4IS is WAY sharper lol. But almost twice the price on the used market. What I really like about the 17-40 is it's small size, and that with a front filter, it's weather sealed. Currently I do not have any non-extending lenses that are weather sealed. And put on the 7D2, it has a 27-64 FOVCF which makes for a nice walk around weather sealed pair.

Do you think it would be possible to add in your final verdict a small section with your thoughts whether this could somehow match up the quality of the 15-30? I shoot weddings and decided to go for a ultra wild angle lens, though I only would need it for maybe 20 shots per wedding. Both APS-C and fullrame are allready in my posession. So not necessary a real side by side comparison but your thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks anyway for your great work!
