Quick upgrade from Tamron. I own the "old" one and that is a fantastic zoom. The new one looks very nice, as is the review! The kitten is so sweet..., I always take a look at your gallery.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm using a EOS R with my Tamron but my photos seems a little blurry, especially when I zoom in. Can you assist me as to why this happening please??! I'm lost on how to micro adjust my lens. Can you assist me please??!
I have both G1 and the new G2 and found two things to be interesting after a weekend of testing: the focus breathing at 8 feet seemed slightly worse in the G2. I filled the frame with a 12" ruler and had the D810 mounted on a granite like tripod. VC was off to eliminate shift and 8 out of 8 shots showed a whisker beyond the edges of the ruler while the G1 was perfectly framed to the edges. As a control, I borrowed the Nikon 200 prime and it clipped ~3/4 of an inch either side of the ruler. While the G2 will let you get closer, won't you still loose the compression of the 200mm range? Secondly, after about 500 photos of my pup playing in the melting snow, the G2 appears 'warmer' than the G1 and the tag-a-long Nikkor 50 1.8 - all else being equal. Looking forward to your thoughts as well as Matt Granger's - he sold me on the G1 after an exhaustive review of three 70-200 offerings. Tech is one thing, but results are what we are after.
+SVA1 I do think there is a slight bit more focus breathing than the G1, but so close the margin of error as to be indistinguishable in real world shooting. I think more import to me is the ability to get in close and have a nicer maximum magnification. The G2 lenses definitely have a different rendering than the lenses they replace.
Great video, as usual! You broke down the build quality & upgrades really well. The price point looks really, really great. I'm battling between which I should get first, the Tamron 90mm macro, or this. Tamron seems to be doing an incredible job on their lenses in this new SP lineup - and they are very reasonably priced! Can't wait to see your image quality examination video!
Hi Dustin, thanks for producing all of these great reviews. I recently discovered your channel and ended up binge watching for hours :) I’m looking forward to the next round with the 70-200 G2 and its performance with the 2x teleconverter.
Yea I’d 2nd the binge watching Dustin. Thanks to your vids I moved from an 80D to a 6D2 with a tamron 24-70 G2. So far bloody stoked. Keep up the solid vids. You deserve some solid credit for the effort put in !!!
Excellent and informative as always, many thanks Dustin. I'm really looking forward to the next part of your review of this lens as I may be in the market to get a copy for myself. I hope you're keeping well. Take care 🍀
Definitely interested in the quality of pictures compared to the Canon 70-200, how both teleconverters work/compare and focus capture speeds v the Canon. Can't wait to see your next video on this lens.
Hi Dustin, looking at the images in the image gallery, I think I'm sold. It has the sharpness, but also this 'magical' softness in the out-of-focus part. I've been looking for a portrait lens that has this feature, without having to break the bank for the Otus 85mm :D This lens (I'm sure) is going to be amazing!
Nice pictures with the lens. I guess the pictures of your new kitty is the ones I like best. The lens seems to perform quite well. The bokeh is quite pleasing.
+Cactus Tweeter The overall rendering from the lens seems to be quite good. I'll do some direct bokeh comparisons once I have the Canon on hand (should be by Thursday)
Fantastic review, I've been waiting many days for a nice review in this lens and here it is. I'm thinking to get one myself, never owned a 70-200 f2.8 before, but as this is just released, would it be a good moment to buy it or should I wait for a few months? Thanks!
Man the Bokeh on that lens in your pictures is so smooth. I can't wait to see the final review. I want one now but I'm anxious to see how it performs with the teleconverters first as I'm still looking for a good 300-400 lens option for my bag. I tried the 1.4xiii on my original Canon 70-200 2.8L and wasn't super impressed.
+Dennis Moncla That's definitely in the works. There are a few photos in the gallery taken with the extender, but I'll create a separate gallery by the end of the week for photos taken with the TC
Thanks, I'll just keep checking for your update of the page. But as it stands every picture had amazing clarity so I'm very impressed. I look forward to your official review on how many are hits and misses and such...
Thank you for this interesting first look :) I hope you'll be able to include many portraits, including head shots and half and full body shots in the sample photos. I'd be interested in how this Tamron lens compares to Canon with regards to sharpness, bokeh, color, auto focus speed and accuracy as well as focus breathing. Thanks for your helpful reviews! :-)
Hi Dustin! You're reviews are awesome! Keep up the good work! I was going to buy a Sony RX10 iii for long focal length but I think I will buy this one instead since I already own a Canon 6D!
Can't wait to know your thoughts on the overall! quality and if it can compete with the L series. At such a price, if it does, this might be a great deal for photographers like me planning to get a new 70-200. Thanks for the overview. While you put your review online, I'll check Matt Granger's review.
Thank you Mr Abbott. Do you happen to remember the make and model number of that tripod you had in this video I don't believe you mentioned it during the episode. Thank you.
Would love to see the bokeh and DOP on a crop body such as 7dmkII :-) Trying to work out if this would be a better option than the Sigma 85 f1.4 for portraits
Dear Pastor, please do autofocus performance tests on all 3 lenses you mentioned in daylight and lowlight, center and off center focus points with your 5d iv. Thanks!
Zoom ring at the end of the barrel is the deal breaker for me on this lens. Such a long and heavy lens where you have to support the weight and zoom with the same action doesn't work well for me. With the Canon I can palm support at the tripod collar and zoom with my thumb and index finger for a much more stable scenario. I found the 70-300L awkward and I bet this will be even more so since it'll be an even longer reach. It's a bummer, because it's at a killer price point. I'll still be following your updates as you post them though. Suggestion on something to look for in your review.... How well in grabs focus (accurately) in dark environments. The last two weddings my Tammy 24-70VC just can't make up it's mind on the accurate distance of the subject(focus square within intended person ....for example...on the line where white shirt&vest meet or the hair line on someone's head where there's contrast) when shot in the dimly lit reception rooms. It constantly pushes focus behind them, not something micro adjusting could fix. I like having the 70-200 at receptions during toasts and for candids at the guest's tables or in a dimly lit church shooting from afar. How well does this lens accurately judge the subject's distance, and in turn, nail focus?
Great video! Is it okay to pair this with a Crop sensor Body? I've read that a designed full frame lens will perform differently with a Crop sensor such as having not a true f2.8 opening but an f4 to APS-C and 112mm-320mm focal length? the focal length doesn't bother me but the aperture :( I'm also choosing between this or the Sigma 50-100 1.8g. thank you very much for your time :)
Dustin, one more thing. I tried the original version of this lens on my then 5D Mark III and found some hunting action or delay of focus capture when trying to focus even on medium to far off focal point; almost a hesitation like effect. I now have the 5D mark IV so I am obviously curious to see if this lens does that when capturing focus. Thanks!
I will be very interested to know how the Tamron TC compare with the Canon III versions with emphasis on how well they also work with canon glass like the 300mm f/4.0L in my case but confirming they work well with any L glass would be helpful. I am thinking this lens may be a high priority for me in 2018.
+Stephen Likes Tools I'm going to do a whole episode on TCs. The TCs work fine, but I too read those user reviews and don't think that people really understand how TCs work when it comes to focus on lenses with smaller maximum apertures.
Great review Dustin! Really I'm interested at this lens, its quality and price make it really interesting, although I'm a little bit worried about the rumors I've heard on its focus breathing, that could be quite pronounced.. What do you think about?
+Davide Gonella I think that few people even cared about focus breathing until it became the hot topic for the month. The lens focus breathes only the tiniest fraction (1%) more than the last generation, but also allows for much closer focus and higher magnification. The end result is more useful (usable) than the last one. I'll cover this in detail in an episode next week.
Many thanks Dustin, I'll follow it with great interest! Actually I read, some days ago, that this was significant lower comparing with the same lens of Nikon, but you've touched the point : it's the hot topic of the moment, :-D
Hi Dustin, You mentioned that you remove the tripod collar from this type of lens when you use them... Can you please tell how do you carry your camera with such heavy lenses attached? Isn't it recommended to carry them from tripod collar as otherwise it puts too much weight on the lens mount...
nice review dustin, how about the fungus of the lens? is fungus affects picture quality? i have the previous generation of that lens and has a fungus at the front element which is kind of annoy me, do i need to bring that to tamron service center?thanks anyway for your videos because it educates me a lot.
+kirayamato10astrike No new lens should ever have any fungus in it. I've never seen a new lens with fungus, only in the old vintage prime lenses I sometimes buy.
Great video Dustin. I say this is not exactly a chip lens. For the price difference I would probably still go with Canon's 70-200mm. Although looks like very nice glass. I think Sigma will release one very soon too.
Vladimir Naumoff I had the 70-200 canon is version 2 for five years is awesome Swich to Nikon rented the tamaron G2 omg sharper then canons I was blown away beautful glass insanely
Hi Dustin, thank you for this very informative and well-balanced overview of the new Tamron 70-200. I am considering this lens as a "lightweight" companion to my Canon 100-400L II, if sharpness is comparable and bokeh significantly better. So I am looking forward to your comparison of those two lenses! One question please: does the Canon 1.4x III fit on this Tamron lens? Enjoy the review process! Greetings from Spain, Dirk
Although focus breathing is generally portrayed as a negative issue, is it a potentially beneficial feature on a crop-sensor body like the 80D, to allow more reasonable focus distance closer to the subject? I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I have the 80D and the Tamron 85mm SP, and although it's an effective 136mm, I love this lens for outdoor shots, and especially portraits. I'm interested in the 70-200 G2 for it's zoom flexibility, yet with a crop sensor body it seems like focus breathing would be less of an issue?
Hi Dustin, I bought this lens last week and my concern is when I am video mode and when I click the fstop to 2.8, I hear a clicking noise when I click to it. Similar to a photographer taking a picture. What in the heck is that? You hear it a tiny bit at 3.2 making one click sound but when you get to 2.8 then click clacks a few times. You do not hear it in Photo mode when you are changing the fstop
Hey Dustin, I've been watching your vids for awhile, they're great! ... I'm in the market for a 70-200 for my Canon 5DMk4 . I'm about to take a trip to Japan in a few days and I'd like to make a decision before I go so I can't wait a week for your next review.Based on what you've seen what would you choose, either this or a used Canon 70-200 f2.8 mk2 and why? I'd really appreciate your perspective. Thanks!
I reviewed that lens on my website several years ago. dustinabbott.net/2012/11/tamron-sp-24-70mm-f2-8-di-vc-usd-review/. I probably won't do a fresh review until the G2 version of that lens comes out.
+Juice Roberts Not true. No more focus breathing than the last generation. There is some focus breathing, yes, and I'll cover that in a future episode. At most focus distances beyond about 12 feet it will be a true 200mm.
Great info, I bought the 85mm and was wondering if I should get this one too, or is it too much of an overlap? Could you recommend a next lense to buy? I shoot freinds' weddings and grand children lol! Thanks in advance!
Dustin Abbott I have an old 70-210 and 18-135 sigma that I bought for the canon elan 7 and 60d respectively .However I have a few manual Minolta lenses that fit my 6 d with a converter, so sometimes I have to be creative lol! But the Minolta glass is beautiful!
I would look at something like a 35mm lens, perhaps. It's a good pairing with an 85mm. I understand about the vintage lenses; I have a little collection myself that I enjoy pulling out on occasion.
I'd love to know how this lens handles flaring for video/bright highlights on metal.. Take a few shots of some cars? :) By the way.. your cat... is adorable :) what a cute little kitten :D!
will this work on a Sony E mount a7 with an adopter that will allow all the lenses and camera body 's features to work as intended? i ask you the same question but with the Sony "A" mount a99/2 body????
dustin I checked your review and bought zeiss 21mm f2.8. thanx. i m nikon D810 shooter i have nikon 24-70 f2.8 VR. this is not sharp lens and poor saturation , please suggest me mid zoom range and sharpest lens ?
+vikk If you can wait, Sigma has a new 24-70 f/2.8 OS coming out that will probably be very sharp, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a Tamron 24-70 G2 coming at some point
Hi! Great video, really Informative! I got a copy of this lense last week after I watched your video. When I got my lense there was internal dust inside and some piece of hair ass well. so I returned it to the dealer and asked for an other copy. I hope this time it will be clean. Did anyone have the same issue? Thanks! keep up the great work!
Hi dustin, your review is very good but don’t belive every copy of Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 lens is perfect ! Because i am buying this lens in 1st March 2017 from Thrissur, Kerala, India. The lens was no sharp image at any focal length. My camera body is canon 5d mark III with 24-105 f4, canon 50mm f1.8 STM, Tamron 150-600 G1. (1 month earlier i am checking 70-200 f2.8 G1, The lens is good and gives sharp image) After 4 days i found my lens is front focusing issue. I adjust the camera micro adjustment in Wide +10 and Tele is +15. Now focusing just ok but sharpness is very poor comparing to 24-105 f4 (at 100mm f4), canon 70-200 f2.8 is ii (at 200mm) . In 6th March I returned to Tamron Service Collection centre Ernakulam, Kerala. Firstly they send to Tamron Service Centre, Bangalore, India. Now i am heard the Bangalore Service centre send to Tamron Service Centre Delhi, India and no information till the date. Now I am hating the new Tamron 70-200 G2.
+Hethuhami Saranapala This is not a review, and I did not say it was. I have a cycle of 2-3 videos per lens. The first is where I look at the specs, build, and design of the lens. The second is where I examine the image quality in detail, and the third is where I sum up the overall performance and give my final verdict.
